So glad it wasn't Gruden

Would I have been excited to land him? Helz yeah. Am I butthurt we didn't get him? Not really. It was a loooooooooooooooong shot to begin with. It's really not worth retreading anymore. He flirted with some upper-mid level boostets, we offered what we could, he said no, end of story. If he really wanted to be here he would have negotiated a fair deal for both parties.

I'm happy with CBJ. He wasn't really on my radar but the more I've researched the guy Ive decided he is a winner. I think he will be a good recruiter and great motivator.

Yeah, all those top rated recruited classes, immediate return to national relevance, and the fear of our rivals would have really sucked.

All of that is pure conjecture. After the initial splash of his hiring none of that was guaranteed. The guy had no real collegiate experience. It would have been a very high risk gamble to give him everything he wanted. I know some of you will argue that till the cows come home but its the simple truth.

To me, it's almost like CBJ is that average-looking, slightly pudgy girl you took to prom, while Gruden is that smoking hot rich girl that you could have taken if you hadn't accidentally thrown up on her when you tried to ask. And then after the fact telling yourself that she probably wasn't even interested, and you didn't really want to drive her dad's Porsche there, and that she probably wouldn't have put out, anyway.
And who knows, maybe pudgy girl will let you round the bases, maybe she even pleasantly surprises you in some ways you never even expected.
But you'll always wonder how things might have turned out with that smoking hot girl....

I would still like to see proof that ut ever offered gruden?? Oh yea all there is is a 'source' some poster supposedly had! Show proof that ut offered gruden or stop crying and support the team. Oh yea, there is proof from gruden himself ut never offered and he never was interested

Man, I thought I was done with this, but just one more time for old time's sake:

#grudenisGARBAGE.

I'm still singing/humming the "Hallelujah Chorus" that he's not our new HC. Y'all can carry on now.

I don't understand exactly what the point of being bitter about this is if the Haslams weren't on board with it.

We'll find out what the Haslams were on board with in the next 6-12 mos. as we observe Hart's career path. All that Hart using the plane means is that they aren't babies who were willing to wreak havoc in a sloppy way and hurt Bill's political career.

They will say anything to make themselves fell better that their school blew the opportunity for
the biggest hire in NCAA history.

Your post implies that Gruden wantes to come here and Tennessee said no. Do tou really believe that? If Gruden wanted the job he would have taken it. He didn't, so Tennessee got rhe best coach available. I don't understand some if the anger. Did you guys want to just promote Chaney?

So glad it wasn't Gruden? I lost IQ points reading that post. Saban is full of himself too and has three Sears trophies and about to get another.

This place kills me.

hahahahaha...you guys are killing me....yeah it would suck for him to be here 4-5 years and us have a ton of national attention and stud recruits

Heck I would take him for 2 years! WIth a roster like we would have I bet coaches from the big east wouldn't turn us down.

I don't know if Gruden wanted to come here or not. I do believe he was interested and I think it was closer than many will lead you to believe. JMO though.

I am not angry that we didn't get Gruden. I am not angry at CBJ. Am I disappointed that this UT administartion set their sights so low? Absolutely. AT this point in time it is my opinion that Tennessee needed a huge hire. We did not need to take a chance on an up and comer. We'll see how it turns out. I hope he does great.

I'm not saying I didn't want Gruden to coach here. Just that I don't think he'd be here more than 4-5 years.

Any coach winning championships every year will eventually go back to the NFL. You think Saban will coach at Bama until he's 80? I think not. Although look at what he's making. Another 5 to 6 years a college coach pay could be pushing what an NFL coach is making.

If Gruden was in play and wanted to come coach the Vols that tells me the NFL was the last thing on his mind at least for 8 years.

I truly believe that Gruden did want to come here. I think the chance to coach again without his family having to endure the brutal NFL work schedule and the fact that his wife's family is nearby were very appealing to him.

And the stuff about Bill Haslam being on this side or that of a possible Gruden hire... Well, good politicians have a way of finding themselves on the winning side of an issue whether or not that's what they truly believe or were pushing for behind the scenes. Besides, I imagine a Gruden hire would have ignited a lot of discussion about the fiscal responsibility of paying so much for a coaching staff, and it's not in Bill's political interest to look fiscally irresponsible (even though I believe a Gruden hire would have paid for itself and then some).

So the 4-5 * recruits who know they have a very legitimate shot at the league would never consider playing for a coach who:

a) coached in the NFL

b) won a superbowl

c) commentated on MNF for the last 3-4 years

d) has his own televised breakdown of players and the draft

e) knows EVERYBODY in the NFL

What's the appeal?

C'mon folks! This isnt a zero sum game! Gruden would have been great and anyone who thinks he would not have been a great coach (Super Bowl !!!) is wrong. The thing is, CBJ is a great coach as well (4 conf titles in 6 yrs). Its all good! GBO!

Bcarter is being the very thing he's condemning people for. So what people wanted it to be Gruden. So what people are mad it wasn't. So what people are pissed at hart for supposedly screwing it up. Personally, I believe something happend between Gruden and Tennessee but someone got in the way. Bcarter trying to be this wise, sensible vol fan all of a sudden is laughable considering the pro grudencomments he made. Just keep being a complete douche bag while choking on some Cbj.

How would it hurt Bill's political career if they refused to let Dave Hart use his plane to hire a crappy football coach? I don't buy that for a second.
You cannot tell me that boosters who've put millions of dollars into UT football and who supposedly had Jon Gruden lined up and ready to sign would stand by, let him use their plane to fly around chasing other coaches, show up at the Butch Jones meet & greet and be openly friendly with Hart and Jones, and then take "six to twelve months" to get him out. The usage of the plane, the reported friendliness at the press conference -- I just don't see any reason to believe in some giant rift between Hart and the Haslams, and if the Haslams weren't on board then the whole thing was a fantasy.

Fact:
Jim Haslam,Manning, and other booster/former players had pooled the money together and had a verbal agreement from Gruden to be the next coach. This was done way before Dooley was let go.

Hart never wanted Gruden, as Hart would have had very little to no control over the football program. He fired Dooley earlier than he was supposed too, which put the final negotiations in super fast mode.
The assistant pay was the only thing never finalized.
Negotiations were still going on while Hart was "interviewing" Gundy and Strong. If you think Strong didn't want the job you are mistaken. Would you take a job when you didn't have the boosters backing?

Payton Manning called Butch Jones four days before his hiring and told him he should take the Colorado job.
Jones said this himself. He wondered why Peyton wasn't asking him about the UT job.
Your guess is as good as mine about how it finally fell through... but the deal was all but done at one point.
