So many doom and gloomers...

Once Barnes retires for good, you better hope Fulmer dishes out a truck load of money for a proven Basketball coach because Tony Bennett, Jay Wright, Bill Self, Chris Beard, Tom Izzo, those proven coaches aren’t leaving their jobs to come here.

Replacing a HOF coach will not be an easy task unless you want to take a chance on an up & comer.

wow, how in the world did we find hof'r Barnes?

Imo, we'll be in a much better situation when we have to replace Barnes than we have been in a while during a coaching search. This assumes the program continues to proceed on the same trajectory it's currenlty on. All jmo, so tifwiw.

I don't think he's been on here in several months

He's been gone so long that I can't even remember his screen name. Drill something or something Drill. Sarge? Then there was his little buddy / alt that got triggered all the time. He might still post... can't remember his screen name at all. Orange or Vol something maybe.

Senior Drill and the alt had Buzz in it -- neither come up using the @ anymore

I hope he is ok. I know he was a little older. Maybe he just got frustrated and left.

Let’s repeat.

I was a fan of Pearl, but grew tired of watching talent like Scotty Hopson, et al. wasted while it felt like no one was harnessing that full potential

Maybe the player had a role in that situation? Just thinking out loud.

Because, if the team were disbanded today, 5 guys might go to other P5 schools and 5 might red shirt for Hampton. Admit he could have done better with the roster and the discussion ends. it is what it is.

Of course he could have done better (especially if the had the benefit of 20/20 hindsight) and he is accountable for the results...I have no issues with that or posters who reasonably question the recruiting strategy. However, too many want to ignore certain contextual facts while harping on others (e.g., CRB being paid as a top 5 coach) and my patience for fools regurgitating asinine mantra's like "CRB was lazy in his recruiting" has worn thin...one cannot be lazy in any aspect of the turnaround we saw in CRB's first 3 years in a power 5 conference with a team in disarray coming off a .500 season. JMO

Who created these circumstances? Outside of Turner getting hurt who created these circumstances?

Wow...VN continues to outdo itself. Suggest you put your keyboard away now if you honestly cannot think of how anyone or anything else (other than CRB) plays into recruiting, development, transfer decisions, etc...

You act like Barnes has taken Tennessee to new heights, when he hasn't.
Awww does that make you feel better about yourself? I'm not pulling against Barnes at all however I do feel he's ripping UT off. I don't need a reason or special circumstances to bash anyone, I just will when I want to. But I get it, it hurts your feelings because he signed your hat and now you would drink his bathwater.

Speaking of hurt feelings...did he not sign your hat? lol

That is pretty naive to think a guy who hung his own coaching staff out to dry behind closed doors as he negotiated his own buyout from Tennessee would show any loyalty to anyone but himself. He entertained the idea of the Memphis job and received a pay bump for it while at Tennessee. His loyalty to Tennessee after his firing was nothing more than an attempt to save face around town since he had no immediate intention to leave.

All that said, if Pearl, who was making somewhere in the neighborhood of $2 million at Tennessee when fired, IIRC, were offered a $1.7 million annual raise to coach at UCLA, he'd have hit the door as quick as he could if Tennessee refused to make a reasonable counter offer.

This is precisely why all the pearl clutching (pun intended) by certain posters is hilarious and the irony is quite a few of them worship Pearl while castigating CRB for getting paid...lol

200 D1 mens basketball teams. 68 will get an invite, 34%. I don't think it's too much to expect Tennessee to make the NCAA tournament. This is Rick's six year in Knoxville, so far he's taken the team to the dance two times. It's possible to still get there this year, to do so would mean the light comes on for this team/staff and they reel off several wins in the next couple weeks. Guess we'll see how that plays out.

Isn’t this Year 5?

This. They also constantly b**** about Barnes underachieving here yet Pearl's best team got their ass spanked in the Sweet 16. And I'm pretty sure these same people wouldn't praise Barnes for "just" making the Elite 8, it would be he can't make the Final Four.

You do realize that the narrative of what happened behind the scenes with that UCLA deal, right? Rick told Fulmer he was headed to UCLA, Fulmer gave him more money, Barnes tried to strong arm UCLA for more after he accepted the original deal, UCLA said no, Barnes then tried to go back and accept the original UCLA deal after strong arming UT for more money.

Report contradicts Rick Barnes on why Tennessee basketball coach didn't take UCLA job

I also find it hilarious when people like you accuse people of coach worship when in fact you're the one who thinks the man making 5 million a year holds no blame because you hold him in some weird light and refer to him as a deacon.

Texas fans wanted him fired so they could start winning under future HOF Shaka Smart...#GreatDecisions
Hindsight, at the time Barnes hadn't made it past the first weekend of the NCAA in almost 10 years and Shaka Smart was a hot name in coaching searches. At the time everyone here would have been through the roof excited had Tennessee hired Shaka Smart.

Not me.

I always thought he was overrated

You mad bro? Lol

Well, if the Los Angeles Times says so then it must right (I mean UCLA would not try to spin anything as I am sure their athletic department is as pure as the driven snow...lol). Point is that neither you nor I know how it went down. All I know is that Fulmer seems to be pleased with CRB returning so that is good enough for me.

Lastly, please show me where I ever refer to CRB as "deacon" or have ever said he is beyond criticism (hint: you can't because I have repeatedly posted it is fair to question his recruiting strategy and that he alone is accountable for the results). Of course, I am guilty of giving the benefit of the doubt to a man who took a power 5 dumpster fire and turned into the #1 ranked team in the country within 3 season so, yeah, I support CRB until he gives me a real reason(s) not to (hint: getting paid is not one of them...lol).

Barnes has not gotten the job done this year. There have been some extenuating circumstances with the roster. However, Tennessee is not going to find a better coach. I am happy with Barnes for the most part. He develops kids. His teams play hard and Tennessee does not have to worry about getting caught cheating. I think Tennessee will be better next year barring injuries and assuming the freshman are as good as advertised. Sometimes it takes freshman a little time to adjust, even the good ones.

And we’d have been wrong...again. No one can compete with us in that aspect. 😏

I agree with everything in your post except the first sentence. I think, given the players he has had available, Barnes has done a solid job this year. Winning and losing is not always just attributable to a coach. Sometimes it is, but not the Vols this year. Given what we lost and when we lost them, this season was about what I expected. Historically, most freshmen look just like what we have, or worse. The Fab Five don't come around very often although I have high hopes for next year's young ones.
