So many threads about playoff scenarios (rightfully so) but can we discuss bowl scenarios if we don't get in?

I've seen one projection that has us playing Kansas State in the Cotton Bowl. What are the other possibilities?

FAQs:
1) Which SEC Team qualifies for the CFP?
The winner of the SEC Championship Game automatically qualifies for a spot in the Sugar Bowl if that team is not selected to participate in the four-team playoff. If the SEC Champion is selected to participate in the four-team playoff it will play in the Peach Bowl or Fiesta Bowl. The next highest-ranked SEC team not in the four-team playoff goes to the Sugar Bowl.

COTTON BOWL

Sugar Bowl is incorrect. If we win out AND do not rise into the top four teams, we would be going to the Cotton Bowl. This year's College Football Playoff Committee non-playoff bowl game is the Cotton. This will be a matchup of the fifth and sixth ranked teams.
So your saying there is a chance to play Alabama again???

If we win out (and are not in cfp) we are almost guaranteed to be in Sugar Bowl. 11-1 and in Sugar Bowl would be a decent consolation prize all things considered.
It may have been Sugar instead of Cotton that I read, I'm not sure. My memory isn't as good as it used to be.

We'd destroy Kansas State and I don't imagine many people would watch it. I wonder if there's a scenario where Tennessee and TCU both miss the playoffs and we end up playing them in the Sugar?

I guess UGA, OSU, USC, and Michigan could get in... although I find that unlikely. If LSU shocks the world in the SECCG (very unlikely) and TCU loses a game you could have UGA, OSU/Mich, USC, LSU. Or I suppose the committee could decide to let all the conference champs in and TCU lose a game; so you get UGA, OSU, USC, Clemson... but I also find it highly unlikely that the ACC champ gets in over us.

So basically we're stuck with Kansas State if we don't get in. And looking back on what they've done this season, they aren't as bad as I thought they were when I began this post. After the embarrassing loss to Tulane, they've absolutely destroyed Oklahoma State and Baylor. They lost on the road to TCU with a backup QB then they lost by 7 to Texas when Bijan Robinson ran for 209 yards... KSU trailed 31-10 at the half in that game and almost came back to tie up on the final drive, but Martinez fumbled.

KSU may be tough for TCU to beat in the Big 12 Championship Game, but I still think we'd blow them out. Kentucky seems like a comparable opponent.

Source is SEC, take it for what it's worth. Sugar is open to the next highest ranked SEC team. Cotton is just based on SEC teams final ranking, does not say the next highest ranked team. My take is Sugar.

2. Additional SEC teams may be selected for the CFP Semifinals (Peach or Fiesta) or one of the CFP access bowls (Cotton in 2022) based on its ranking in the final CFP Selection Committee rankings. There is no limit on the number of teams from any one conference that can be selected to participate in the CFP bowls.

I'm more confused now lol. You're saying Sugar Bowl is incorrect, but the post you're quoting and the link therein says that if the winner of the SEC goes to the playoffs, the next highest ranked team in the SEC will go to the Sugar Bowl.. that's us! o_O

After reading through the FAQs in that link, my interpretation is that (assuming UGA wins the SECCG and we get left out of playoffs) we would be the next highest ranked team behind the winner of the SEC and therefore go to the Sugar Bowl and Alabama would go to the Cotton Bowl.

2) How can additional SEC teams be selected for the CFP?

Additional SEC teams may be selected for the CFP Semifinals (Peach or Fiesta) or one of the CFP access bowls (Cotton in 2022) based on its ranking in the final CFP Selection Committee rankings. There is no limit on the number of teams from any one conference that can be selected to participate in the CFP bowls.

There is no way that a 2 loss LSU would jump us into the final 4
I agree, but there's also people out there who say the CFP committee would have no choice. And it's a decent argument. Yes, we destroyed them... but maybe the committee looks at that game and particularly the 4th down plays and sees it as being much closer than the final score indicates. If they have wins over two top 8 teams, like we do, including the #1 team in the country AND an SEC Championship under their belt.... I mean I get it. They also beat Ole Miss who likely finishes 10-2.

But I just don't think you can completely forgive the loss to FSU and overlook the fact that we beat them badly on their home field, while our loss to UGA was *only* by 14 and it was on the road.

I think if Tennessee is left out of the Playoffs the Sugar Bowl will be a matchup of 11-1 Tennessee and 9-3 Kansas State.

Is there anyway for us to play Clemson? That’s who I would love to play if we don’t make it into the playoff

if we don't make playoff, the Sugar Bowl will be the destination unless we lose one of the last two games. Sugar Bowl will go ballistic if Tennessee not sent there with their legion of fans.

They would not want LSU and Georgia will make playoffs. Only 3 possibilities for Sugar Bowl... Opponent would be from the Big 12.

Here's how I see it, we make the playoffs, Bama to Orange, LSU to Sugar and Ole Miss to Cotton.

Don't make the playoffs Vols to Sugar, Bama to Orange, LSU or Ole Miss to Cotton.

I think we're in and playing in Fiesta Bowl.

That is not correct. The Cotton Bowl is filled after the contract bowls are filled. Its in the bottom of that link.

4) How does the CFP selection process work in 2022-23?
The CFP Selection Committee ranks the top 25 teams and selects the four teams to participate in the semifinal games (Fiesta and Peach). Then, after the contract bowls (Sugar, Rose and Orange) are filled based on conference agreements, the Committee will assign teams to fill the remaining access bowls (Cotton).

Sugar Bowl gets the highest "non-playoff" SEC team. Assuming we win our last two and then get the royal shaft from the committee, the farthest we fall is the Sugar.
