just to be fair, the preseason bar has been set rather low for tennessee the last few years and tennessee has fallen short of those expectations.

1. Until we start proving we're winners again, this is par for the course.

2. WKU has a proven coach, IF, IF, IF we walk onto the field presuming we can win by just yelling "BOO!" them, remember Akron and Troy.

3. Rejoice that we're being written off. It's all that much the sweeter when we prove them wrong.

4. It's their blog, they can say what they want.

5. Finally, in their hearts, they want Tennessee to win. Remember when it looked like we might turn the corner just before the Florida game? ESPN and others were talking us up. Networks do better when Tennessee is in the hunt and winning. Our fans travel well, Nielsen ratings jump, and big name schools want to play us because it means big money for them.

Butch wasn't talking rise to the top for nothing. He knows all the above,'bout time all whiners know it too.
Don't we have a proven coach?

A guy from ESPN put that as one of his potential SEC surprises. Says Petrino will be motivated to prove he should have been hired for one of the SEC openings. Not going to happen though.
I don't even know why as Vol fans we entertain the possibility that WKY can compete with us. I don't care who the coach is we have more talent and better all around coaching. CBJ is not going to allow this team to take any team for granted. Its Western Kentucky.

What I and a I think lot of other fans want to see is tangible evidence of Vol superiority over the non conference schedule (Ducks the exception). No more OT wins over 20 point dogs please! Final margin does not have to be gaudy just a good old fashion "they were NEVER in the game beat down. 30-0 sounds about right and the didn't cross the 50 'til late 3rd when the walk ons were playin'. You know the way Bama does it. Just sayin'

Sooo if we lose 9+ games for the first time in UT history yall aren't going to have a problem with that or be concerned?? Just making making sure. Cause for a fan base that can't get over losing to KY for the first time in 26 yrs I find it tough to believe a 9 loss season isn't going to cause an issue.

Not saying that's going to happen but it's a possibility. WKY is game we better be careful with. Its early and can kill confidence. Absolutly no excuse for not going to a bowl game next season. Now on the other hand we can have one of those freak seasons like the Aggies did or like mich did hokes first season. Who knows.

Leave it to you Oskie. Leave it to you.....

Defense and the QB are the biggest questions right now. Can our defense at least be decent this year and help us win games. If anyone noticed, we probably would have only had two losses last year if the defense that even mediocre.
QB, whoever the started is needs to be a threat and not a question mark.
I feel like we can come out with a 3 loss season but 4-5 is not too shabby.

Ok, Ok, Ok, I'll re-word it. WKU has a proven SEC coach.
The point is the upset alert shouldn't be dismissed offhandedly. Petrino could actually have them ready and coached up enough to play a competitive game. It will be very early in the season so if an upset is possible that will be the time for it to happen. We come in just presuming we will win and give half an effort we could end up with our teeth kicked in. If anything will allow them to beat us beside the above claims, it's arrogance.

I don't think any team should ever go into a game and think they can't get beat. And from what I've seen so far from this coaching staff theres no way thats going to happen with them. It starts at the top and trickles down to the players. I think this team will play with a chip on their shoulder all season. I feel good about it.

A basic analysis of Rivals recruiting classes from 2010-2013 yields the following class averages (excluding Austin Peay and South Alabama):

WKU - 86
Oregon - 15
Florida - 5
Georgia - 11
South Carolina - 19
Alabama - 2
Missouri - 35
Auburn - 7
Vandy - 45
Kentucky - 50
Tennessee - 15

On basic team talent, and assuming a constant attrition, we should go 7-4 with Oregon being a toss-up.

Butch is clearly not an average coach, but UT has clearly not played up to their talent level in previous seasons. Call it a wash for coaching advantage, and I'll give Oregon the nod...7-5 is very achievable.

But geez...if Butch can't do anything with UT in his first year, what makes anyone think that Petrino will be any more effective with his greatly outclassed WKU team? Yes, he is good...but there is a big gap between UT and WKU talent. Dools might have made it a game, but I don't see Butch doing so. Give Petrino 3 years, and WKU might be scary good for a team with a lean talent pool...but for now he faces the same challenges as Butch, but with a fraction of the talent.

After last year, any player on our team with the audacity to even feign arrogance would be warming the bench for a couple games if I was coach.

...Glad the bloggers are pumping our boys up! WK will be Smokey meat.
My feelings exactly

I don't think secondary is a weakness. Last year's scheme would make you think everyone is slow and clumsy. Give this coaching staff time to coach before you right off the defense

Geeesh. If our Defensive Coordinator shows up for 1/2 the practices and all the home games, he will win National Asst Coach of the Year.

After watching last year vs year before and seeing the combine #s of our defenders, I believe Justin Wilcox may be the greatest coach in the history of organized sports.

Well those 3 guys running over 4.7 40's at the pro day would make that as well.

That statement alone would make me rush back to the "criteria drawing board".

Just using Rivals class strength as a more unbiased evaluation of our raw talent. It says what it says...which is nothing about coaching. Dool's teams performed well below their talent ranking. Butch's perform above. Using the class ranking as a metric, and based on Butch's ability to get it done, I think we stand a good chance of going 7-5.

Do I think we'll win against Oregon? Probably not, especially not as an away game in Butch's first year. Year two at home the odds would be far better. That said, everyone is so enamored by Oregon, yet their class ranking suggests they would be pretty middle of the pack in the SEC. I think they probably perform above their ranking due to their speed and endurance...the same philosophy that Butch is pushing for us. As it has helped Oregon perform well, it will also help us...but probably more in year two and beyond.
