So where would a win tomorrow rank in TN history?

To me, it‘s pretty damn high on the list everything considered…Big Ten team (obviously), Ohio State, on their turf, weather conditions, solidifying program as top tier, trip to Rose Bowl, remain in the hunt for national championship, etc.

IMO, it’s a top five win in school history.

Depends on how we win. Blowout would be our '85 Sugar Bowl. Close game would be breaking ND's 100 game home winning streak. I'm looking for some new greatest games in our storied history.
Pretty sure ND never had a 100 game home winning streak, nor did we break it.

Are you thinking of breaking Miami’s 26 game home winning streak in 2003?

A gutter program that literally imploded into mediocrity for over a decade and we then hire a guy to stop the suck and in year 4 we’re in the playoffs…and add to that a W over OSU at their place would be elite for 2 reasons-1) we advance and 2) the talking heads that think we’re all hillbillies and cousin lovers are gonna have to take this program seriously for the first time since 1998

It’d be up there. The whole damn state would square dance

Are you referring to the ‘91 ND game? If so, ND had lost twice in South Bend the previous season.

Through the lens of modern Tennessee history, so, everything after the national title season, it'd stil rank behind 2022 Alabama - you don't beat Nick Saban often, and you sure as hell hadn't beaten Alabama in the last 17 years. So that one just goes on top for the modern era.

But that said, beating Ohio State in Columbus would be a pretty big win though. Probably ranked it 2nd or 3rd. I cannot - CANNOT - overstate how big that 34-32 win in Gainesville was in 2001. Beating Steve Spurrier's national championship contending Gators, with their Heisman contending quarterback, on their own field, and beating him so hard he retired after that season ... that's just a freaking legendary moment. I'd have to think about those.

It could leapfrog to a solid second or maybe 1st if - IF - it was an amazing comeback win after which Tennessee went on to win the championship. That would recontextualize the Ohio State game as "the one that kickstarted the title run." Then it could become legendary, and possibly worth elevating. The thing about playoff wins is that they're awesome but at the same time they aren't, in and of themselves, "special." Beating a Big 10 traditional powerhouse on their own turf would be a big moment. But if you then lose the next one, then what was it really all about? Only two teams will matter for the 2024 CFP story - the two finalists. And of those, only one will truly be remembered.

It would be a great win, but a run all the way to the championship would wipe that away quickly. Having to play 4 games to win it all, the next one is the bigger one each week.

Your right I think he is thinking Miami, but ND did have some streak going when we beat them in 1991 when we came back on the Irish after falling behind 31-7 late in the second quarter. I just can’t remember what the streak was. GBO

Obviously a national championship game would be a stand out game but a win tomorrow night will stand right next to it in my mind, for the rest of my life. What a special opportunity for the team and a joy for us fans.

They lost to Penn State in South Bend in November of 1990, so they didn’t have a long home winning streak.

The “record” that I recall was that it was the largest deficit a team had ever overcome to defeat Notre Dame.

if we're talking about the entire history of Tennessee football, this would be nowhere near the top 5.
Even just General Neyland's achievements. His 1939 team went unscored upon in the regular season.

This is a glorified Citrus Bowl on the path the a national championship. No one should feel surprised if we go to the Shoe and win this game. and there's no way this is a Top 5 program win given our storied history.

This isn’t likely, but why not. Say we go on to win the title, and this ends up being the closest game, like a last-second field goal and we win the rest by 10+ with a kneeldown at the end. It might feel a little like, “that game in the Shoe was the real national championship game.”

Those are top seasons but I wouldn't consider any of those games in the top 5. Puls, no one is alive to remember what the games were anyway.

This would be the biggest win for Tennessee since the 1998 national championship win over Florida State.

As far as eyes on a Vol game, probably the most viewers of a Vol game ever.

Biggest game since 1998 National Championship

Each game after in the playoff supersedes the previous one.
That bama game in 22 was monumental because of how bad the fanbase and program needed it and we had 100 recruits there who many are on this team. I put this one at a very close second. Just because it’s the first game of the playoff. But it’s very close to me.

Bama was a bigger win for us this season. If we beat OSU, they finish with the same number of losses as Bama, with a loss to TN.
