It’s really hard to compare this game to Neyland’s era. This game has real championship implications. The 1939 team you mentioned went undefeated, untied, and unscored upon in the regular season. Back then, national championships were decided after the regular season and before the bowl games. Despite the fact we had won a national championship the year before and then didn’t give up a single point at the time the final votes were cast, we didn’t win a championship. No bowl game played by anyone during Neyland’s entire tenure ever factored into crowning a national champion. You can’t say any one game in Neyland’s tenure is among our biggest ever, because at the end of day, no one game ever decided much.if we're talking about the entire history of Tennessee football, this would be nowhere near the top 5.
Even just General Neyland's achievements. His 1939 team went unscored upon in the regular season.

This is a glorified Citrus Bowl on the path the a national championship. No one should feel surprised if we go to the Shoe and win this game. and there's no way this is a Top 5 program win given our storied history.
I'd say it'll be atleast top 5 since 1998. Bama game in 2022 is number 1 since 1998 imoif we're talking about the entire history of Tennessee football, this would be nowhere near the top 5.

That may have been it. I will never forget the game it was on my birthday! On the bad end of birthday games, the loss in 95 at Memphis was tough. They lost to Penn State in South Bend in November of 1990, so they didn’t have a long home winning streak.
The “record” that I recall was that it was the largest deficit a team had ever overcome to defeat Notre Dame.
To me, it‘s pretty damn high on the list everything considered…Big Ten team (obviously), Ohio State, on their turf, weather conditions, solidifying program as top tier, trip to Rose Bowl, remain in the hunt for national championship, etc.
IMO, it’s a top five win in school history.
Your right I think he is thinking Miami, but ND did have some streak going when we beat them in 1991 when we came back on the Irish after falling behind 31-7 late in the second quarter. I just can’t remember what the streak was. GBO
1985 Auburn was a few months before that Sugar Vols game. Auburn was #1 in the country and had some guy named Bo Jackson. He won the Heisman that year, Walter Camp, SEC POY… but rushed for 80 yards in a loss to the Vols. Talk about shades of things to come that year.Below 1986 Sugar Bowl
Below 1998 NC game
Below 1982 Alabama game
Below 2001 Florida game
Below 1998 Arkansas game
Yeah, but if we were to get blown out many on here will be calling for CJH's head! I am usually not confident, but when you look at who Ohio State has played and who their opponents have played, I gotta say they are in for a rude awakening playing us after our hurt players have had 3 weeks to heal. I just saw some pregame on ESPN 2 and they were talking about how Ohio State was going to whip us. Man, I love me some underdog motivation!A gutter program that literally imploded into mediocrity for over a decade and we then hire a guy to stop the suck and in year 4 we’re in the playoffs…and add to that a W over OSU at their place would be elite for 2 reasons-1) we advance and 2) the talking heads that think we’re all hillbillies and cousin lovers are gonna have to take this program seriously for the first time since 1998
It’d be up there. The whole damn state would square dance
My bad. It's below that one too. It was big time enough that Tony Robinson was on the cover of Sports Illustrated the next week. Great article too. I still have it. It sits right underneath the Ernie and Bernie cover from 19761985 Auburn was a few months before that Sugar Vols game. Auburn was #1 in the country and had some guy named Bo Jackson.
