I don't understand the panic around the possibility of Oklahoma coming after our beloved Coach Heup. Serious question: Why would a coach in his position make that move? I don't get it.

1) From the Football Angle: what's the allure? Yes, OU has its great tradition of winning but UT is a historically great SEC program with money, tradition, facilities, NIL, best fanbase in America, etc. The potential here is through the roof. OU is coming TO the SEC for a reason. Seems like a lateral move, more or less.

2) From the "Quality of Life"/Family Angle: I'm sure Norman is nice but there's really no comparison to Knoxville.

Orange-colored glasses put to the side - I don't get it. Why should we be worried that he would seriously consider going to OU? He's not even from Oklahoma.

What am I missing?

The only angle OU has is that he played ball there. That's it.

They screwed him over and fired him. They are coming to the SEC and I'm not sure he'd want to have to come back to the SEC as an enemy.

Tennessee should give him the money and support he wants. He's seeing how amazing this job truly can be.

If he left for OU, it would only be a heart decision. It would not be a sound business decision.

100 million dollar guaranteed contract. Doubtful, but the going steal a coach rate nowadays.

It’s just some VN fans who are suffering from severe BVS and a lack of common sense. Obviously we are having a really good year which has the potential to be a great year. Now some think just because Heupel is an Oklahoma guy that he would go back there if OU came calling. It’s dumb really. OU is not firing Venables before he gets a chance to get his guys he wants on defense. Riley left him with squat defensively.

1. Pertaining to the football side of it, there is zero benefits of OU over us. Yes OU has had much more recent success but they will be moving to the SEC soon. I could possibly see if they were staying in the B12. But why go to a program that’s coming to the same confoyoi are already in? Also OU fired Heupel. Why go back to a place that didn’t want you?

2. Oklahoma has nothing as far as quality of life above Knoxville.

Again it’s just crazy fans thinking that because we are on the way up that OU will come calling when there is absolutely ZERO evidence to suggest they ever will. Battered Vol Syndrome is real.

it is insecure Tennessee fans saying this stuff. they have been conditioned to think that they cannot have nice things because when things start going right around here they start looking for lucy to pull the football away from charlie brown. they act like Tennessee is cursed or something. Tennessee is not cursed, they have been victim of the most inept administration possible for the last 20 years. So inept that they brought back the guy who authored the decline of Tennessee football and made him athletic director. You quit making stupid decisions and hiring morons and start acting like other athletic departments in America and that is the start of getting confidence back.

He won a national championship as their quarterback. He eventually wound up on the coaching staff and Stoops fired him in favor of Lincoln Riley. Supposedly there is bad blood over that firing. Let's at least hope so.
Stoops actually fired Heupel because the season was going poorly, and Stoops needed a scapegoat. Oklahoma’s offense was good. Oklahoma’s defense was atrocious. Stoops’ brother was the defensive coordinator, so Stoops sent Heupel packing. Lincoln Riley turning out to be a good OC was nothing more than a lucky coincidence.

It's insecurity from fans that's all it is. Oklahoma isn't about to fire a coach after one season. Just enjoy the moment

I'm sure CJH has heard the cautionary tale of Coach Johnny Majors. They have much in common. Both are Heisman runners up. Once Johnny Majors distinguished himself as a great coach, while always looked over by his alma mater. He built a program and won the natty at Pitt. Tennessee was in shambles and he came home to build it into a competitor on the national level. Then, many say, he was stabbed in the back. Josh Heupel was stabbed in the back by his alma matter. He has had success and now finds himself at the helm of a resurgent SEC and National power house. ICYMI, CJH went to OU because of Mike Leach. (Futures Market) I'd put more money on Mike Leach being the OC at UT than CJH leading the Sooners. Go Vols! Buck Fama!

Maybe these previous threads will help you understand the "panic" by a few fans. Most just ignore it and move on

Count Down Until Dooley Moves On to Georgia.

Would Butch Leave UT For Michigan State If Offered The Head Coaching Job?

Pruitt to Bama?

Just fans being fans. For starters OU just hired a HC, they won't be in the market for a HC anytime soon. He isn’t going back to OU.

I think Oklahoma could go after the former Baylor and Temple coach Matt Rhule if they decide to move on from Venables.

Heuple played at Oklahoma
Peyton played at Tennessee

There will always be losers in fanbases that don't understand.....

Heuple appreciates everything Oklahoma did for him
Peyton appreciates everything Tennessee did for him

Neither were born and raised fans of the University they attended.

Oklahoma fired Heuple
Tennessee couldn't get a chance to fire Peyton, but the had no use for the QB who last won a National Championship.

Scott Frost was the next coming of Jesus in Nebraska............
UCF fans celebrated Tennessee hiring Josh Heuple.

Common Sense will prevail

I've lived all over the country, and Oklahoma is easily the crappiest place I've called home. You could double my income right now and I wouldn't even consider going there.

Okmulgee where the streets are paved with dirt……….or many of them were when I was there……..and some places didn’t even have road signs.

Lane Kiffin is the simple answer. Ever since he pulled his shenanigan people are just overly paranoid. We've played football here for a long time and two coaches have left here for another job. Doug Dickey, who admitted it was the biggest professional mistake of his life and Lane who also admits it was the biggest professional mistake of his life.

I tried to look up but couldn’t fine Venables buyout. I would think it would be pretty high.
I think Oklahoma will give him some time since Lincoln took a large chunk of the recruits with him.
