Somebody Please Explain the Oklahoma Thing to Me

I don't understand the panic around the possibility of Oklahoma coming after our beloved Coach Heup. Serious question: Why would a coach in his position make that move? I don't get it.

1) From the Football Angle: what's the allure? Yes, OU has its great tradition of winning but UT is a historically great SEC program with money, tradition, facilities, NIL, best fanbase in America, etc. The potential here is through the roof. OU is coming TO the SEC for a reason. Seems like a lateral move, more or less.

2) From the "Quality of Life"/Family Angle: I'm sure Norman is nice but there's really no comparison to Knoxville.

Orange-colored glasses put to the side - I don't get it. Why should we be worried that he would seriously consider going to OU? He's not even from Oklahoma.

What am I missing?
I'm not too concerned with Oklahoma. You start to realize that relationships are important and he's got a strong one with Danny White. Plus he seems to have really fallen in love with our fan base too.

The thing we really have to worry about is if the NFL starts calling, which I can actually see happening. I didn't really think this before, maybe it was because we didn't do as much last year on offense, but the more I watch his schemes the more I start to see a lot of elements that could work in the NFL. And if they're hiring a failed football coach like Kliff Kingsbury to be a head coach because of his offensive expertise, I wouldn't be surprised at all if a pro team came calling for a successful one like Heupel. Especially with how young Heupel is.

Heupel to Oklahoma is just something VolNation is concerned about. Oklahoma is not firing the coach that they just hired from Clemson after only one year on the job. There is no job at Oklahoma open nor there will be anytime soon. Not sure why this is even a topic.

He isn't leaving if he is paid well, treated well and he keeps performing. Oklahoma fired him and yes Knoxville is one of the best collegiate cities in the nation.

I've lived all over the country, and Oklahoma is easily the crappiest place I've called home. You could double my income right now and I wouldn't even consider going there.
Ain't enough $ in Oklahoma to double your income right now. ;)

He’s not going anywhere. I am 0% concerned. With that being said, I saw a few on this board mention giving him a $100 million contract. Let’s pump the brakes. We’ve learned our lesson about premature massive contracts. Also, just look at Michigan State and Mel Tucker as a prime example. Call is BVS or whatever, I just need to see a bit more from him first. I’ve been burned too many times.

I have full confidence that DW will be smart and give him a fair raise at the end of this season should we keep on a 10 win regular season pace. Let’s see if he can beat Alabama or Georgia first before we start talking $100 million contracts.

It ain’t happening. If he wanted it he’d have took it last season. Don’t freak yourself out enjoy this season

Heupel is all IN. 🍊🧡🍊🧡🍊
He now bleeds BIG ORANGE BLOOD!!!

Big Orange blood plus $’s is greater than ANYWHERE else plus $’s………

GBO! 🍊🍊🍊
Here’s what I have seen with CJH - watch the on field interviews immediately after the games in Neyland Stadium - especially FL. He was like a little kid that has never anything like how UT fans show up for their team - he was giddy, laughing and going on about “how cool it is to be part of this” - and I think his emotion and comments were genuine - not just for a TV audience. I think he is genuinely excited to be our coach, be on Rocky Top and building UT back to prominence. He knows what he has here. And I doubt he ever saw something like that at OU.

Just in case some did not know. Heupel is from South Dakota, not Oklahoma. His ties there are as a player and a coach. One was a positive experience... the other was not. The folks who backed Stoops still run OU football.

I don't see it. Stoops is still very much involved in Oklahoma football and they would go after his brother first and other big names. Stoops and Heupel don't get along. If Oklahoma hired Danny White...then yes I am worried. If not, then I am not worried.

Heupel has a good thing at UT with an AD that trusts him and that he trusts versus OK where they got rid of him for all the wrong reasons.

Josh Heupel has always worked as a head coach with Danny White as his AD. They have a very good working relationship. Joe Castiglione and Stoops are the men responsible for Heupel being fired at OU. Both are still heavily involved with the program, castiglione is still AD. Last I heard Stoops and Heupel haven’t spoken since Heupel was forced out at OU, as long as Castiglione is AD and as long as Bob Stoops is breathing above ground I don’t see Heupel at Oklahoma.

Observed a thread on Twitter. No, they hold out that he was a lazy recruiter and Malzahn improved the team. Basically chalking it up to Tennessee recruiting itself and a gimmick offense.
Well that is something, someone besides us saying Tennessee recruits itself 😂

I see that too. 👍
It’s a great fit for both parties……..
