Somebody Please Explain the Oklahoma Thing to Me

it is insecure Tennessee fans saying this stuff. they have been conditioned to think that they cannot have nice things because when things start going right around here they start looking for lucy to pull the football away from charlie brown. they act like Tennessee is cursed or something. Tennessee is not cursed, they have been victim of the most inept administration possible for the last 20 years. So inept that they brought back the guy who authored the decline of Tennessee football and made him athletic director. You quit making stupid decisions and hiring morons and start acting like other athletic departments in America and that is the start of getting confidence back.

Bingo, nailed it. You can close the thread now.

Guys he’s not Kiffin calm down!!!!
He’s got the engine back going in a freight train that even at 75% not one single team wants to step in front of, wait until it’s full speed! This guy is so far from dumb and this would be incredibly dumb and not to mention kinda shady, seems as if he and White both owe each other a lot in their professional careers and are friends. If you don’t think Heupel heard Lame Kiffins statement about his biggest mistake then you are living under a rock

Heuple played at Oklahoma
Peyton played at Tennessee

There will always be losers in fanbases that don't understand.....

Heuple appreciates everything Oklahoma did for him
Peyton appreciates everything Tennessee did for him

Neither were born and raised fans of the University they attended.

Oklahoma fired Heuple
Tennessee couldn't get a chance to fire Peyton, but the had no use for the QB who last won a National Championship.

Scott Frost was the next coming of Jesus in Nebraska............
UCF fans celebrated Tennessee hiring Josh Heuple.

Common Sense will prevail

Maybe these previous threads will help you understand the "panic" by a few fans. Most just ignore it and move on

Count Down Until Dooley Moves On to Georgia.

Would Butch Leave UT For Michigan State If Offered The Head Coaching Job?

Pruitt to Bama?
Point well made and point taken. But just to balance the narrative, I notice you conveniently left out threads from when USC came calling for Kiff 😉. Coach poaching does happen, and for the first time since Kiff, we actually have a coach good enough to poach.
That said, my concern level for Heupel leaving UT for Oklahoma is in the 5% range. You don’t give up a safe position at a Program like UT to become the new Captain of the Titanic when she is already taking on water.

I don't think it's likely for several reasons, but good grief, it's not dumb, stupid or crazy to question the possibility.

I disagree so you're stupid. Lol.

Hopefully OK is smarter than to fire a coach after one year. Imagine the buyout would be huge anyway.

Our coaches all seem happy and Danny White and Heupel are buds..this is not a thing to fret over lol

My deepest fear is OK in their desperation goes for the double of our AD and HC with some seriously deep pockets stepping forward. Would take some really large, really long, guaranteed contracts I would think, but I have learned to never say never. I have to believe it is a tougher recruiting situation up there and Jimmy's and Joe's are still the main ingredients in this sport. Doing more with less has it's known limits. Glad his roots are in SD not OK though.

It’s just some VN fans who are suffering from severe BVS and a lack of common sense. Obviously we are having a really good year which has the potential to be a great year. Now some think just because Heupel is an Oklahoma guy that he would go back there if OU came calling. It’s dumb really. OU is not firing Venables before he gets a chance to get his guys he wants on defense. Riley left him with squat defensively.

1. Pertaining to the football side of it, there is zero benefits of OU over us. Yes OU has had much more recent success but they will be moving to the SEC soon. I could possibly see if they were staying in the B12. But why go to a program that’s coming to the same confoyoi are already in? Also OU fired Heupel. Why go back to a place that didn’t want you?

2. Oklahoma has nothing as far as quality of life above Knoxville.

Again it’s just crazy fans thinking that because we are on the way up that OU will come calling when there is absolutely ZERO evidence to suggest they ever will. Battered Vol Syndrome is real.

I don't eve think it is fans, it is media driven and what is funny, is that the articles will have it in their head line as click bait and start out reading like he is going but at the end of the article, it basically explains why Heupel is staying at Tennessee. So the media articles are very misleading and designed to cause controversy (i.e. get hits).

That started this mess.

I don't understand the panic around the possibility of Oklahoma coming after our beloved Coach Heup. Serious question: Why would a coach in his position make that move? I don't get it.

1) From the Football Angle: what's the allure? Yes, OU has its great tradition of winning but UT is a historically great SEC program with money, tradition, facilities, NIL, best fanbase in America, etc. The potential here is through the roof. OU is coming TO the SEC for a reason. Seems like a lateral move, more or less.

2) From the "Quality of Life"/Family Angle: I'm sure Norman is nice but there's really no comparison to Knoxville.

Orange-colored glasses put to the side - I don't get it. Why should we be worried that he would seriously consider going to OU? He's not even from Oklahoma.

What am I missing?
They also fired Heupel so that’s In our favor.

It's simple. This is all about the media trying to drum up viewers. They create non-sense, untruths whether it be in sports or news to make the uninformed anxious, worried, angry, choose your emotion. It makes them MONEY.

Venables isn’t getting canned after 1 year. And didn’t they kick CJH to the curb pretty unceremoniously when he was OC there? Might have left a bad taste in his mouth. He has no reason to be unhappy at Tennessee. He’s got tons of good will and an AD that fully supports him. He loses that at OU and the pressure would ramp up considerably. These schools with itchy trigger fingers are going to find out that all the money in the world isn’t going to make the job attractive if guys are getting fired after 1 season. That’s just bad business. Maybe make a run at Urban Myer if you’re trying to hit a home run but it’s going to cost an astronomical amount of money.

I think a package deal would be super expensive…. Let’s just enjoy the ride and see what we can do for now lol plus it seems like Donde et all and admin all get along and that rarely happens.. they’ve got great synergy 😂

Heupel was only at Oklahoma for 2 years as a player. At this point, Knoxville is just as much his home as Norman. Sometimes going home isn’t the best career move as we’ve seen with former VFLs

On another board, a poster said basically he's convinced that if/when OU comes calling, CJH is gone, because "he's an OK boy".

My response was this;

Actually he's not an 'OK boy'.

Huepel was born & raised in Aberdeen S. Dakota.
Played HS football at Aberdeen Central High, was SD player of the year his senior yr.

Played 2 years of college ball before even going to Oklahoma.
Weber St., then Snow College in Utah.
Only played 2 yrs in OK.

Also, not for nothing, as a successful coach there, Oklahoma fired him, and it wasn't particularly pretty.

Yeah he did great at OK, but he's NOT an "Oklahoma boy".

They fired him, I don't know how you can repair that bridge; if they do, we will be a better place for an established coach to look at us. The repair job in just two years has made Tennessee very marketable, it doesn't hurt that other sports are elite right now.
