In regards to a few supposed situations we have encountered this year on the recruiting trail. This is from a Wes Rucker interview with Coach Dooley, and should shed some light on the subject for some of the people that don't quite understand how information is processed and presented by the recruiting services....

Q:I suppose all these recruiting questions serve as simply the latest reminder that you’re back in the SEC, huh?
DOOLEY: “I think that’s an SEC issue. I think it’s like this at all the big SEC schools. To the credit of many, they’re created this industry called recruiting that makes a lot of money. There’s a lot of people where that’s all they do — they talk about recruiting, and they get paid to do it. The more listeners they get, the more they get paid. It’s just an industry that’s part of the process now. It doesn’t bother me, but what always concerns you is information getting put out that may cause negative reaction by your fan base and may cause a negative spin to recruits. That always concerns you, because we have no control over that, and many times the information isn’t accurate. That’s the hardest part.”

So, before you go running your mouths about things, make sure you realize that our HC understands how message boards and other negative things our fan base creates because of articles and other things. Also, understand that it's not just on here that negativity can be spread in recruiting, sometimes it's just word or mouth that causes it to become an issue.

So, my best advice to those who like to spin things negatively on the coaches and program, be careful what you say and do, because you may just get your wish that we will suck. Because it's all about perception for these kids, so the more positive the better for our program, and the likely-hood that recruits will be more receptive to our school.

Good post!! I agree this negative talk needs to go. Recruits do get on this forum. All this negative talk is going to do nothing but push them away.

DD needs to realize that winning cures all.

That should be his primary focus.

Name one recruit UT didn't get because of anything posted on an Internet message board.

Exactly. If he changes his mind because of a message board...he's a headcase we probably don't need.

Eric, this is just part of the process man. We like to talk trash about other sets of fans and their schools, but there's very little that separates us all. Players change their minds for what appear to be dumb reasons sometimes, but even if they did because of messageboard jabber (which I think is something of a longshot) then it would be a two-sided street that may cost a program one player and gain them another.

I think our football program is headed straight down the crapper. Why should I pretend otherwise?

Well, if that's where you want it, that's awesome. It's no where near as bad as you are making it out to be. We are in a tough situation, but we are better than at least 4 teams in the SEC right now, IMO. We aren't at the bottom yet, but this year isn't going to help your perception either. With a little luck, which is a key element in football, we could go to a bowl game if we stay relatively healthy.

It's not as bad as I think, yet we're at best the 8th best team in the SEC and will need luck just to go bowling. Did I get lost and end up on a South Carolina board?

We are going to have to go through the mud at this point to get back towards the top. Seems as if you don't want to temper your expectations any, and if anyone else does, you want to call them South Carolina fans. Interesting. Perfectly rational thought process. :ermm:

And I think you must not think too well. It's far too easy to take the side of opposition so that if he fails you can say "OMG I WAS SOOOO RITE [sic]" and if he succeeds, you'll pretend you didn't ever say stuff to begin with, or attribute it to someone/thing else.

I suppose it's much more rational to act like topics digressing into discussions of a coach's worth is some new phenomenon or that you know things aren't as bad as someone thinks when you've admitted you have no idea how things are going to turn out.

How would you know? Many things can turn a kid one way or another in recruiting. Why give a kid a negative vibe when you can make it positive?

We got to 7 wins last year with bad luck on the injury front. Luck shouldn't be necessary to get 6 this year if Dooley is as great as his supporters claim.

Why care either way? I enjoy posting on here, but ultimately it's as meaningful to UT's football program as the progress I make with my UT dynasty on Playstation.

He's acting like we are freaking Vandy kpt. That's why I responded the way I did. Besides, we won't know Dooley's worth for quite sometime.

Most of the "this program is heading down the crapper" people always add in that they hope he proves them wrong. That is their only fallback.

You know this team isn't even on last year's level, and that's saying something.
