South Carolina is about to take the attendance title away

UT's attendance peaked at 15,356 in 2006. With the exception of a large uptick in Coach Summitt's final season it has declined since then. Last years attendance was 11,038. That's a decline of 28% over a 9 year span.

The attendance situation at UConn is similar except the decline has been even larger. They peaked at 13,435 in 2004. Last year's home attendance was 8,313. That's a 38% decline over an 11 year span.

The NCAA attendance numbers have been essentially flat over the same period. While UConn and UT have lost fans others top teams like Louisville (+758%), Notre Dame (+31%) and SC (+248%) have made significant gains.

The numbers are from the NCAA WCBB Attendance page.

Those same stats you linked show UT having an attendance of 15,796 for the 2007-08 season....

I think we did pretty good:

One thing about attendance is that it can be boosted by a star/charismatic player. Next year, DeShields should provide that so I am pretty confident that the LV program will get back to the top of the list.

I wonder if the drop off in attendance at schools (notwithstanding the increase at Louisville/South Carolina type schools) is correlated with the decrease in interest in basketball at the high school level.

It has been well documented how Volleyball is quickly gaining ground on womens basketball as a spectator sport. The Womens Volleyball Final Four has really transformed itself into a marquee event.

Yes, that is one of the factors. One of the other's is the increase of games being televised. You're already paying for the service, it's very convenient to sit back at home and watch the game on the large screen. Other sports are concerned with the same problem.

Drop in Attendance? It's because of those fugly long shorts they wear..... can't even tell they's wimmen! :)

I imagine a bunch of the old geezers have passed on as well. Regardless we'll get the attendance title back next season when we have a Diamond.
