South Carolina Postgame Report

The team we saw yesterday and far too much recently will be lucky to win 5 more SEC games. Shooting 25% and having more TOs than assists is a death sentence against most of D1 basketball.
You also said we weren’t beating Missouri, so...

I'll say this, I love Fulky. But if he's our leading scorer then we're not having a great night offensively imo.

Rather see Bowden, Pons, or James even being our main scorer and Fulkerson pulling down 10+ rebounds a night

Not like they’re running a bunch of set plays to get Fulky shots. He just takes what comes his way in the flow of the game. The plan isn’t for him to be the high scorer on the team. Just Fulky is one of the few making his shots atm. Obviously, if Bowden shots 40% he scores over 15

And it was a completely different team on the road at Missouri, although still too many turnovers. I will bet any amount we win at least 5 more SEC games. Have you been watching any other teams? LOL

Watched quite a few in the SEC. Who are your 6 wins?

If I knew that, I wouldn't be posting on this board. You apparently haven't noticed how mediocre college basketball is this year. Or there's just an abnormal amount of parity. Either applies. Missouri just stomped Florida. Ohio State has lost 4 in a row. All the normal blue bloods are struggling

1. A win is a win, but this team is so hard to watch. They didn't deserve to win today, though, to be fair, neither did South Carolina. USCe's ineptitude at the foul line saved our bacon. We are just bad in some very basic, fundamental skills. The TO numbers are alarming. The dumb passes by our guards, the total lack of awareness by our bigs, it just blows my mind that this is a Rick Barnes coached team be cause they play so anti-Rick Barnes. Beyond frustrating.

2. How do you shoot 26% for an entire game and 19% from 3, and manage to win? It really is amazing. Offensively, that was one of the worst combined efforts from two teams I've seen in a while. We had two droughts in which we didn't score from the field in the first half that combined to equal something like 16 minutes. We hit 7 shots from the field in each half, so we were consistently terrible.

3. Jordan Bowden...there just aren't words for it, folks. Right now, offensively, he is broken. That's all you can say. I swear I would try to bring him off the bench to see if it helps to fix his mental state, right now. I just see no reason not to try that, at this point. It is the only thing we haven't tried. What is happening, right now, isn't working.

4. Honestly, the only player I can't really complain about, right now, is Fulkerson.
Bowden shot 1-17.
Pons shot 0-7.
Vescovi had 7 TOs.
Nkamhoua and Pember cannot defend or rebound effectively despite their size.
Fulk had a double-double, 15/10, hit all 5 of his FTs, and only committed 2 TOs and 3 fouls in 37 minutes.

5. We have seemingly lucked out by Vandy missing Nesmith. @UGA and then @Vandy was gonna be crucial to split. I feel better about our chances of doing that, but we have to be a better disciplined offensive team moving forward. Performances like today are inexcusable.
At Georgia is exactly the kind of game we have to win to get to the dance. Those are the make or break kind of games. I don't think a split is good enough. Your getting zero credit for beating Vandy. They will finish well out of the top 100.

As long as our Senior leader is shooting this poorly, (he is 9-54 over the last 4 games, roughly 16.6% from the field) we are going to struggle.

Vescovi will continue to help and hopefully stop turning the ball over so much as he becomes more comfortable with the team. Fulkerson playing hard and being consistent is a huge plus. Neither are going to replace the leadership we have lost from Bowdens' play being down so far this year.

Hopefully he comes out of whatever this slump is asap. Just my 2 cents.

They're are a lot of things we need to do differently to fix our putrid offense.
1. We have to score in transition. Trying to score against a set defense is just not our forte. We have the athletes to get out and run. We have to do it more.
2. Continue to get to the foul line. If we aren't shooting at least 15 FTs a game, we aren't going to win. South Carolina really bailed us out time and again yesterday.
3. Stop settling for 3s. We just aren't a great 3 point shooting team. We should be doing more pin down screens for Bowden for midrange jumpers. Pons in the post or midrange is way more effective than Pons for 3. Vescovi and possibly James should continue to take them, and if someone is open you continue to take it as well, but stop forcing it.
4. We just have to be better at finishing around the rim. All of our guards are below average at best at finishing inside. Turner was easily the best on the team at that. We have to get better there, but you have to continue to attack as well. If you get in the paint, you will continue to get free throw shots as well.
5. Lastly, stop turning it over. You can't shoot if you don't have the ball.

I think before the season if you had told me that Turner retires, Bowden shoots, less than 20 percent from 3, and Fulkerson was our best player, I would've said we weren't winning more than 4 sec games. We're still fighting and clawing despite having just less talent than most teams.
We have to take and make a decent percentage of wide open threes. Defenses are just gonna sag lower and lower and we will get nothing inside. That's a big part of what happened in this game. If you pass up a wide open three and try to drive you are just gonna dribble into a brick wall.

So you are guaranteeing more than 5 more wins. Who are your 6 left on schedule we'll beat?
Not sure. Like I said, if I knew that I wouldn't be posting on this message board. I'm pretty confidant the players will improve based on previous seasons and Barnes' ability to coach.

Does anyone else get the feeling that there are “issues” amongst the coaches? It seems to me that coaches English and Oliver are pretty uninvolved during the game.

It’s obvious when watching the game which assistant had that games scout. English had mizzu and was very active while the others did very little. Yesterday it was Oliver and English turn in the background. They rotate scouts

Do we play SC again? How many SEC teams are same or worse than SC?
Okay. Give me your 6 pix. Who will we beat? I'll make it easier. We're 2-4 when we shoot 40% or worse. So give me your 6 teams we'll beat. 8 wins gets us to 18, but I'll settle for 6.

Assuming we win all these, I believe we would still need another win or 2 to get in.

I think this next game against Georgia will be tough, but it's a winnable game

I would agree but even when we've been good we've struggled to win there.

I still remember Brian Williams' frantic put back for the win.

I was convinced before yesterday that Ga had turned the corner and that wasn’t a game we could win. They were awful yesterday so maybe we have a shot

Or maybe Auburn is that good? From what I've seen of them, they(Auburn) are a better defensive team than last year.
