Weight savings is a huge reason. Landing gear is heavy and the weight they save on the first stage pays off like five fold or more in the upper stage.

Catching with the arms keeps the weight down and makes reusability easier.
Not to mention the size this is 3 or 4 times the size of a Falcon 9.
 
I'm shocked they acknowledged it happened.


NASA is big on SpaceX even if the rest of the administration isn’t. NASA knows that without Starship as the moon lander, the return to the moon will not happen. Also, until Boeing gets their act together, America has no way to send astronauts into space (or at lest bring them back)
 
SpaceX with another big launch scheduled within the hour. Europa Clipper mission to one of the moons of Jupiter

That one will be exciting.

They originally wanted to add a lander to it but it would have significantly raised the cost and added another 3 years development to the mission.
