Spectrum vs. Disney -- A Development Tracking Thread

I’m hearing that YouTube Tv has a nice feature that shows 4 games at once on your screen.
That and the cloud dvr are making me consider switching regardless of whether this gets worked out between spectrum and Disney. Would really like the dvr feature during basketball season.

Thinking about cancelling spectrum cable and switching to YouTube tv. Will keep their internet, working from home it’s really my only option here, but may pull the plug on their cable tomorrow.
You could probably get Verizon home internet. If you aren't hardcore gaming it will be just fine.

Amazed at so many people putting aside decades of getting screwed by Spectrum to back Spectrum.
Your cable bill will go up whether they have ESPN or not. You have watched them operate for 30 years, and have put it aside to prove a point that does not matter.
I haven't had cable since 2012, and would never support Spectrum in any way ever again, against any company or entity.

You guys do realize that if ESPN's business suffers enough, the SEC doesn't get paid. Then UT doesn't get paid.
But ESPN's business is not in the crapper most of you think. It is still earning $600mil+ per month, $200mil of that is profit.

I don't support either company in this fight, because neither company is on my side, or yours.
Spectrum will not serve your interests, even if they make peace with Disney.
Your cable bill will not go down, but go up.
Whoever wins this showdown, consumers will lose bigtime.
Spectrum loses customers every time they raise rates. Yet that is exactly what they have done, and will continue to do.

Spectrum is relatively new in my market in FL. it was originally Time Warner Cable, then went to Brighthouse Networks. Now to Spectrum. I'm ditching internet and TV and having 1GB fiber internet put in and using Hulu Live for TV. The way this went down in FL was pretty ridiculous, showing the FL utah pregame and then just black screening all ESPN channels.

No publicity traded company is on your side or is "looking out for the consumer" and they will never be. Their duty is maximum return to the shareholder.

It does.

I know everyone is PO'd about Spectrum, but the real culprit is Disney. And the same thing is going to happen to YTTV (which is what I have) in that Disney will demand more money and YTTV will fight it. Spectrum messed up in that they allowed this to get to football season. Should have cut Disney's rear-end off back in the winter/spring when the truly passionate folks (football fans) could have cared less.

I had a thought the other day: as sports fans, what would happen if the fans invested in forming a company to buy ESPN from Disney or even forming a media company to handle the SECN? (I KNOW this is an oversimplified statement, so don't @ me!) I frankly would rather Disney, Disney+, etc, never appeared in my house again. Just ESPN for college football.

Get rid of the politics in sports, just be a sports company! No agenda other than CFB in total and other sports in the off season.

I am confused - you say you are ditching internet and at the same time putting internet in? I'm assuming you are just switching to another company that provides internet?

he's likely switching/upgrading from coaxial (cable) to fiber (cable)

A company that is not looking out for the consumer it sells products too will ultimately lose consumers and the stock will tank.

We're used to this in other aspects of life. Park for longer? Pay more. Eat more? Pay more. Stay longer in a hotel? Pay more. Electricity, water, and gas? Use more, pay more.

Maybe TV should be metered. Watch more? Pay more. If our hours watching were metered, perhaps we'd find different things to do instead of being the potato I often am all weekend watching football.
This disruption in the lives of so many on Saturday has potential to be turned into a good thing.

Wish I could say I gave up TV six years ago for lofty moral or rational reasons. But the truth is, I just lost interest after my wife died, because we watched and discussed all those shows and sporting events together. Fortunately, my wallet had more sense than I did, so eventually I got real and asked, why pay for so much that I never watch or no longer enjoy?

Within a few months after ridding myself of Comcast, I found myself wondering how I'd ever had time to watch TV in my whole life! (I'm 67 or 68, so I grew up in front of the TV.)

Reading (and I don't even read fiction) quickly replaced hours each day, and then I discovered podcasts--with their willingness to deep dive for more than an hour with an interview or topic--which made TV news or documentaries seem like tiny bits of baby food!

Some of the money I was saving from cable bills I started spending on dvds, building a collection of classic movies--real quality movies that visually equate to great literature, movies that engaged my brain, that continue to reveal insights or artistic appreciation after 20+ viewings.

My wife and I were loyal viewers of NCIS, and often remarked that the characters had become like part of our family. Whether you like that show or not, you gotta admit... how pathetic!

Today, make-believe TV "families" have been replaced by getting to know real people in my community: the young family trying to make a go of it with their restaurant, the guys expanding their coffeehouse, the employees at my grocery or bank that I see regularly and get to know, get to support, get to encourage, get to share emotionally in their successes or blessings... or support when life gets tough. Reality TV? Nah, do real life. It'll make a better person of you and your community.

I began to support financially what I watch online. Now I donate or subscribe to trustworthy news sources, or support their advertisers--like the Tennessee products on VolNation. If I had to pay to access and participate in this forum to keep it going, I absolutely would! Put your money into what you value and people you admire. Jeff Bezos and manufacturers in China have enough money already.

I've rediscovered the childhood joy of listening to Tennessee games on the radio (yes, even without the great John Ward) while I'm working with my hands. It makes onerous tasks enjoyable--even cleaning up the apt a bit! Afterward, I can usually find replays of the game online, enabling me to rewind plays to analyze or appreciate things I would've missed watching the game live. It's the best of both worlds, plus, I have something to show for my time!

The point I'm making is, invest in quality and you will be rewarded. Invest in the best; invest in people you know. Support local businesses whenever possible, and whenever possible use cash. Why support things and corporations you don't believe in, who don't believe in you? Create the world you want for your children and grandchildren.

Life gets fuller and more stimulating the less TV you have in it. All you're giving up is convenience--and within a couple of months, I promise you'll appreciate the difference.

That's been my experience. Won't be everyone's. But maybe some will find, in this squabble between corporations, an opportunity to explore better things for you and your family.

Yeah I could argue that both ways. If it's necessary to treat the consumer well to make the stock price move then the company will do that. If not they won't. Plenty of drugs out there on the market that cost $5,000-$10,000 just for a single dose or shot.

It's not about Spectrum vs Disney as companies. It's about which side gets me more for my money. In this case Spectrum winning gets a reduced streaming bill because I don't have to pay Disney for Hulu(which just had a rate hike) Disney+, and ESPN+ to offset the coming Spectrum rate hike. If Disney wins I get a rate hike with nothing, zero, zilch, bupkiss. You'll see this same thing play out with every video provider if Disney wins this.

I hate Charter as much and probably more than anyone. But, you need to put aside whatever vendetta you have against them(I'm sure it's valid) for a second and make a decision based on your own self interest. In this case I get more out of Spectrum winning. Once again, I'm not on Spectrum's side, I'm on mine.

Yes, switching from coaxial cable with one company to another company that is fiber.

Yes to this. I have read more articles about this pissing contest than I can count this past week and I am convinced also that if Spectrum wins then their customers win. A Disney win means only Disney wins. I am going to keep Spectrum probably till the end of Sept before switching to see what happens.

Currently reading this site about the other streaming options and doing research to see what I want to change to. Have YouTubeTV free download right now to get ESPN.

What does Target have to do with this?

Murphy was referencing publicly traded companies ("'Their' duty is ...'"). You don't have to reply to Every comment.

Looking at options. Currently Charter/Spectrum subscriber along with Netflix, Prime Video, Paramount+ and Disney+ (wife’s doing on that). Will likely drop Spectrum, will look TDS for internet, possibly TV lineup depending on menu or Hulu+ Live. Even if Charter and Disney reach an agreement, this issue will come up again. It’s where content providers want to take it and will continue to push for this a la cart agenda.

Sling is probably the cheapest option. But it has some quirks. I'm very price driven and mainly have cable for football, wrestling, and battlebots. YTTV appears to have a better experience. Everyone seems to like it.

If everyone dumps charter and moves to another provider, then I would expect a rate increase on internet service. Welcome to another rate increase. You now pay more for your new service and your internet. It may not happen immediately, but I would expect it to happen. I miss turning on my television, bending my rabbit ears, and switching between my 3 channels and seeing football without the fees haha.
My spectrum has been going up a few dollars every month for years. They aren’t no saints either. They are all greedy as get out. Facts

Yes, we have an "enemy of my enemy" is my friend situation in play. In this specific dispute, Spectrum's interest and the interests of its customer align whereas Disney's position is 100% about their corporate interests.

Very well said and sorry about the loss of your partner. I've pretty much given up control of the TV to the wife and grands that come and go for a few days during the season. I'll watch something but I gave up my "Ziva problem" on NCIS and I've no idea what the shows are now, they look alike.

Kudos for getting back out there, keeping your mind and heart (not the pump) active.

I do watch football. When the temp drops, I just want to hit somebody but my knees and hips just laugh at me. Still, I do watch. And I happily recall John and a little 9v transistor radio I carried on my bike. The speaker was perfect for his voice.

Stay safe. GBO.
