Spoke with 3 past UT football players yesterday

I was sitting in my office when two Vol football players broke through the building security to talk with me because I have an mini-T helmet and Neyland stadium picture in my office. It's like catnip to those guys. Would love to tell you what they said but I'm sworn to secrecy.

I am sure they appreciate your discretion. When they are not surrounding people in orange they are reading VN to see who is leaking info.

What does a Pterodactyl voice sound like?..

Just spoke to WR Tony Brown at my work. He is a medical rep for us. He said that he spoke to Thigpen the other day and was pushing for past VFL to push for recruits in Memphis and surrounding areas.

He also said that Butch is doing the right stuff. But he said our team is just not ready.. This was not Fulmers bluff but kiffin and dooliad.

Just makes me feel better that other players see what is going on.

Somehow, I'm hesitant to believe this, only because I went to the gym with an ex UT player and former pro bowler. He has never approached me about UT football. We have talked about deer hunting

Former players just don't walk up to strangers and start spilling the beans about the program

This. I didn't read the other pages of this thread so I don't know if it was addressed.

I have trained with many professional and collegiate football players and they will tell you these things as I have heard them, but for me to hear these things --- I had to earn their trust and respect first. This involved training together in the gym numerous times (offering spots, advice, asking about their training and diet, sharing my techniques etc.) and treating them normal and not like Captain America or some hero I was fascinated by.

I got into a conversation yesterday with 3 past UT football who were Seniors under Kiffin. two of the players were starters and very well respected on here, the other was not in the rotation very often but seems like a hell of a guy. I wanted to give the cliff notes version of our conversation because I found it interesting.

1) Foster was a very weird dude. All 3 stated that multiple times. Went into detail how he would talk only to reporters in a Pterodactyl voice because he was pissed over being questioned regarding his fumbles. I had never heard of this so they told me to goodle it. Here it is Tennessee's Arian Foster Will Only Talk To People Who Speak In Pterodactyl | NCAAF | Tennessee Volunteers

2) Said that Fulmer was not driven at all by the time he was fired. Said he was done wrong though and that Karma is a *****.

3) Said they loved playing for Kiffin. Said Kiffin brought an energy that Fulmer hadn't. They would run from meeting to meeting and the Coaches would all be waiting in the room giving them high fives as they came in. Said it was awesome listening to rap music instead of the opposing teams song.

4) None were there under Dooley but had friends on the team. Said Dooley was a total jackass to players who weren't starters or the main guys but would give certain players anything they wanted and the whole team could see it. Said that no one liked him or respected him. Said even other coaches disliked him. Never lost control of the team because he never really had it. Had nothing on his resume to make any player believe in him when times got hard.

5) Said this team has no skill players right now. North and a few others will develop but this team is bare of field ready skill positions.

6) All 3 stated this Oline is extremely over rated. Great pass protectors but suck ass at running blocking. Said losing them will not effect the team nearly as much as people think because their run blocking is just not all there.

7) Said the players respect CBJ and that it is clear by watching the games he will get it turned around. Said people have no idea how far TN has fallen and how much he has to turn around. Said the players he has now are not mentally fit for his program and he will need his own style players to succeed.

8) Stated they have read Volnation but not that often. Said some players (and recruits) take Volnation more serious than others and yes it has been used as a told to both gain and lose recruits.

9) never asked them about the QBS.

10)This conversation was started because I was wearing my orange windbreaker into the gym and they walked up to me. Said it was nice to see Orange.
This was very good insight on the program. Its sad, but true and believible. I think that alot of fans feared this assement and the fans are frustrated with the losing and we are a way better program as a whole, but we keep losing.

Kiffin's staff were full of great recruiters and high energy guys.

But when it came to playcalling and in game decison making, Kiffin couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag.

Well, best I remember, in 2009 we played pretty well against Florida and outplayed Alabama, only to have a field goal blocked by that lard ass. We ran the Dawgs out of the f&@*%^g stadium and embarrassed South Carolina. What coach were you watching?

One I like the most!

I'm going to defend both of you on this one. Obviously, I have no idea what Arian's conception of a Pterodactyl is, but I would not be surprised if he is confusing, as so many people do, Pterodactyls with Pteranodons. Large Pterodactyls had a wing span of only 5 feet, roughly that of a large hawk or owl (Pterodactylus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). Pteranodons, on the other hand, were massive, with wingspans over 6 meters (20 feet) and Quetzalcoatlus was even bigger, with a wingspan of perhaps 10-11 meters (33-36 feet). See Pteranodon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and Quetzalcoatlus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, respectively.

I disagree. His arrogance is what killed him, but he would have been at least somewhat successful here had he stayed. He was so confident in himself that he thought he could just run up to USC, who lost 30 scholarships in three years, and have success. He was so arrogant that he refused to give the play calling abilities to anyone else, and this lead to him, as you stated, being a terrible game manager. He also wouldn't fire his dad when everyone knew by year 3 that Monta couldn't stop the option and screen passes while running his pro style tampa 2 defense. All these bad decisions lead to his firing, but he's a heck of an offensive mind and one of the best QB developers in college football. He's just not a good leader or a good game manager when he refuses to not call the shots, which wasn't a problem here since we had Chaney.

I have to disagree a bit. He made some terrible calls while at UT. For instance, Auburn had no run D at all in 2009. We marched down the field on the ground against them, then Kiffin called three straight pass plays with CROMPTON (before he turned it around mind you), all incompletions , and then we missed the FG. Worst of all, he ran the clock out against Bama that year, KNOWING that Lincoln had already missed two 40+ yard FGs on the day. Get another 10 yards and we probably beat Bama!

This weekend I was actually in LA when he got fired. I visited my best friend from college. He told me all the USC alums were seriously pissed at Kiffin's play calling. For instance, down 20 on 3 and 15 he called a dive play. Hell, the LA Times cited several bad calls by Kiffin in one of the three articles they had on his firing in the Monday paper.

He was a decent play caller at times, but overall I think he sucked. And I give Chaney and his staff more credit for developing Crompton than Kiffin...his QB at USC is sucking arse this year.

Sorry, but he's a bad coach who barely managed to have a winning record in college and IMO underachieved.

In that game against Bama, anyone with half a lick of sense knew that Lincoln was gonna miss past 40 yards no matter what. Kiffin chose to let the last minute or so run down before trying to kick even though we could have gotten closer. I will never forgive that $^&$% for that.

And yes, we looked good against USC and UGa, but we still had a lot of talent back then. How did we look against Ole Miss and in the bowl game? Those were at the END of the season. I had pretty much lost confidence in Kiffin by then. The Ole Miss loss was really embarassing in fact.
