Most of the rumors revolved around these types of issues. Parents of o and d linemen were saying the skill position players were getting preferential treatment. From what I have read, that was probably accurate info.

If that was the case, then I applaud the effort to get the guys to take on more of a platoon mentality. Can't win the war if the O-line guys are fretting over what the safeties are doing.

an actual post regarding the thread's topic. thanks LG. :hi:
I apologize for causing this thread to take the wrong turn by bringing my frustrations from another thread. But on topic LG has a good point this all sounds good and will sound even better if it translates to fewer "stupid" mistakes. :ninja:

Are you completely bereft of original thoughts?

I think it really depends on whether the team performs well early on because they need to buy into this approach for it to work over the long haul. If they win early, and by that I really mean the Florida game, then they will see its value. If not, you might find that the players grow to resent it as overly harsh and unproductive.
in most years i would agree with you, about the Florida game being the benchmark, but to me, i think UF is just better than us this season. don't know that i would use that as the measuring stick as to whether or not this new approach is working. We could be leaps and bounds better offensively this year and still lose to UF.

In reality, i think we just need to be able to come out on offense and do something. Fortunately we have two games before the UF game this year to do that and one of them will be a toughie. You'll be able to tell just by looking at this offensive team whether or not they've improved or not. There won't be a certain stat you can pull out, though you'd think that if we were better, we'd improve in all offensive stats over last year.

to borrow a line from a movie:
This is a simple game....YOu throw the ball, you catch the ball, got it?

eliminate/reduce mistakes, and half the battle is over.

Would you suffer a panic attack if someone took away your Bartlett's?

Getting back to the original thread, it looks like, based on what's happened this spring so far, that the fortunes of the 2006 FB season falls on the shoulders of one assistant coach named David Cutcliffe plus the fragile ego of a jr. QB named Erik Ainge.

The Cutcliffe situation reminds me of WWII when the Russians were rapidily closing in on the Germans from the East and Hitler appointed an old German general who had been sucessful in the First World War to try to save Berlin from the invaders. Desparate times call for desparate measures. Hopefully Fulmers gamble will pay off better than the Furher's.

I don't agree with that. There are plenty of question marks on our team this year.

1) Have our wide receivers suddenly learned how to catch a football over the off-season?
2) Will our revamped defensive line and linebacker corp be able to stop the run?
3) Will our offensive line be able to blow open holes this year?
4) Will our special teams be able to do anything this year? They were hideous last year!
5) How good will our secondary be without Allen?
6) Will UT continue to shoot itself in the foot with inopportune penalties?
7) Will UT continue to fumble the ball away inside the 10-yard line?
8) Will UT learn to PLAY a good game rather than just TALK a big game?

good questions...

1. so far that's been the emphasis in practice....hopefully it will ultimately be YES!
2. this is the one that probalby should worry us the most imo. We were deep last year, and most of those guys that provided that depth will be starters this year, which bodes well for the starting lineup....question then becomes, where's the depth going to come from???
3. supposedly. the emphasis on being quicker will hopefully help get people out of the way, rather than "waiting" on the rush from the D line.
4. they have no where to go but up, that's for sure. and parts did get better as the year went on
5. I think this will be a very good unit actually.
6. will have to wait until fall before that can be answered
7. you'd like to think not wouldn't you?
8. don't know about the play part, but i promise you won't hear a peep out of that team or coaching staff about how good they are supposed to be this off season.

Except for 2 and 5 the rest of your questions will be under the control o Cutcliffe and his minions. I can reassure you our defense will be sound if not spectacular.

well to answer question #5, we played a little over half of the season without him so everybody back there definetly has game experience so we shouldn't see any fall off from that unit

Our secondary will be the strongest part of our defense. Stewart, Hefney, Fellows, Wade, Johnson and Morely all have big game experience.

I really don't think that stopping the run will be a problem. There is way too much talent in the front 7 for the run defense to not be atleast as good as it was last year.
