Spurrier Press Conference ---> Listen Carefully

Responding to a question about the two timeouts on fourth-and-two at his 26-yard line, Spurrier replied:

“We were thinking about going for it. We were going up there, and if it (defense) looked good we were thinking about going for it. The second time (after the first timeout) they actually changed their defense a little bit. We thought we had a little bit of a hole there (against the initial defense) but we had a different play called (against the second defense).”

Given the outcome, Spurrier openly second-guessed his decision to punt the ball away on fourth-and-two.

“Looking back, I always tell myself to go for those,” he said. “But you always look stupid if you leave ‘em (opponent) on the 30-yard line. Our defense was playing well. It went to third-and-10 there, and they hung a jump ball on us and their kid (North) made a heck of a catch….

“In hindsight, we should’ve gone for it. But we had ‘em third-and-10. That was a big play, obviously.”
Spurrier had beaten the Vols three years in a row and was favored by a touchdown on Saturday.

“Give Tennessee credit; I think they outplayed us,” the Head Ball Coach said. “We were within a play or two of winning but we didn’t do it.”

The SEC is better with the ol' ball coach in it. He has done some great things where he has been and respect the job he has done. Having said that, I love to see him flustered by the VOLS! I think he hangs it up at the end of the year.

Yeh his dontgiveaf*** face says this is his last season or one of just a few. If it were just coaching football he'd probably coach until he's dead, but it's clear all the hoops they have to jump through is more than he can stand. I'd probably get tired of having to answer stupid questions week after week year after year and having to answer for kids' decisions.

I respect and admire coach Spurrier as much as any other living coach. He has always been an original and he was always ready to take on a new challenge and is fiercely competitive. Every one of his press conferences is unique he doesn't talk the typical coach speak. He tells it like it is and he is willing to talk a little smack that I find hugely entertaining.
A lot of people think he hates Tennessee but I believe it is the opposite, I think Tennessee is his first love but things never worked out so he could play or coach here, why do you think he knows exactly how many games he has coached in Neyland Stadium ? Ill bet he doesn't remember how many games he coached in the swamp or at SC so far but he has kept count of how many times he has been on the Hill. He is a native son that wishes he could have been a VOL but life didn't work out that way.

I remember all his jabs at us and a CPF because they drove me crazy but I also remember him saying "Tennessee isn't afraid to play anybody" when a reporter tried to talk us down once.

He is a walking, talking football legend that deserves to be remembered with the likes of The General and The Bear. He is one of a kind and one of the greatest football coaches in history.

Enjoy him while he is still around because college football will be less when he is gone.

You gotta love to hate the ole ball coach. He def. is one of a kind!
