There is no offseason when it comes to Steve Spurrier’s ability to stir things up.

Without prompting, the Head Ball Coach this week brought up rumors about Florida coach Urban Meyer bolting for Notre Dame.

In a long interview on the Paul Finebaum Radio Network, Spurrier called Meyer one of the nation’s top coaches, then digressed.

“They’ve still got that rumor going down there, Paul, that if he has about one more big year he might be the Notre Dame coach,” Spurrier said. “I know you’ve heard that rumor.”

Finebaum chimed in that “people at Notre Dame firmly believe” Meyer will jump to South Bend next year.

Meyer grew up in Ohio and has repeatedly referred to Notre Dame as his “dream job.” But he chose Florida over the Irish in 2004.

“It’d be surprising if he left, but who knows?” said Spurrier, the former Gators coach now heading South Carolina. “He’s accomplished so much. I mean, I left after 12 years because I just said, ‘Hey, I’ve done enough. Try something else.’ He may get to the point where he needs to try something else. Who knows?”

Confirming that he was speaking off the cuff, Spurrer added: “Maybe it was his dream job and not anymore. I don’t know.”

I don't know. I would believe it, but why didn't Urban go to ND when he had the chance in '04?

I don't know. I would believe it, but why didn't Urban go to ND when he had the chance in '04?

He wanted to win a national championship and that seemed easier to do with a cupboard loaded with talent at UF?

ND has been reloading just as UF did. That makes it a prime candidate for what Urban does best.

Stick around, though, Urban. We're building a team to beat your arse good. This year is yours. After that, game on!

I don't want him leaving with a 5-0 record against us. We owe him one before he goes anywhere.

If meyer leaves, UF will end up with another Zook type clone, and UT will dominate the SEC east!!!!

If Urbie leaves can you say Kyle Whittingham to the University of Floridiots, man that would p*ss off the people in Utah.

I actually believe that, especially when his coveted Tebow goes to the NFL and does nothing.

It's not unthinkable. Meyer's legacy is already carved in stone at UF. His kids are older, which was apparently one of the factors that led him to take the UF job in the first place. He's a Catholic guy from the Midwest, and unless you know any Midwestern Catholics, you have no idea how much allure the Golden Dome has for them. Plus it doesn't hurt that the Domers are rich beyond all human imagination.

Meyer's going to be presented with an interesting choice. Florida's a great situation, probably the best in the country for a coach. Right now Meyer probably feels like he could end up winning five or six championships there in his career -- not mere SEC championships, mind you, but NATIONAL championships. Or he can leave that cushy situation that in search of, frankly, immortality. No coach has ever won national championships at two schools. If Meyer wins two at UF and then leaves there, goes to a moribund Domer program, and wins another there -- I mean, he leapfrogs over a bunch of huge names right into the "greatest college coach of all time" conversation. Multiply that times the Midwestern-Catholic-boy thing, and then again by the $6m or so the Domers would probably pay him to give it a shot, and you can see why it would be tempting. As great a situation as UF is.

The every more interesting thing about it is that Meyer is only 44 years old, so he's got 20 more years of coaching in him. He's not just going to have to turn this down next year; he's going to have to turn this down every three or four years until he either takes it or gets so old that they give up. My four-year-old kid will probably be sitting around one day with his friends in college talking about the speculation that Meyer might finally take the Notre Dame job.

Meyer probably thinks he can revive the college football icon known as Notre Dame but it's also an extreme risk. How long has it been since the dome was a winning bet? If he thinks that the cream of the crop Catholic football players yearn to play for Notre Dame he might be wrong. I would love nothing more than to see the Urban Legend go to the Fighting Irish and fall on his face like Charly did. Do you think he is willing to go all in at South Bend?

Notre Dame will offer Meyer whatever it takes in cash, benefits, perqs, etc. to take that job. It would be a record contract, never before seen in college FB. Notre Dame wants to be relevant again and will pay millions to make it happen.

I think he'll be tempted, but ultimately I think he'll stay at UF. Recruiting will be the biggest reason. At UF, he can pull in top 5 recruiting classes and still spend most nights at home in his own bed. It's not that easy up in northern Indiana.

Florida won't be able to out-bid the Domers, of course, but they'll open the wallet up enough that money won't be the biggest issue. Just think about how much they paid to keep Billy Donovan, and he isn't even that good a basketball coach.

Five years from now, who knows? History says that coaches are most effective early in their tenure, so in a few seasons the Gainesville-Meyer marriage may feel a little stale to both parties, and meanwhile the Domers will just be that much more desperate. He may go north eventually, but if I were wagering I wouldn't think it would happen for several years.

If Meyer wins another title this year, which is likely, he may want a new challenge at his dream job, Notre Dame.
