We're not far off from agreement. Right now, the players are holding all the cards which is some "poetic justice" for the schools holding all the cards for a long time. You’re right, but without any restrictions, how does a school build a team? Even the NFL has a little ability to do that, with contracts and trades. Maybe some sort of system like that needs to be implemented. I don’t know.
As far as the criticism goes, I think that’s a fans right. Now calling them out in a mean spirited way (like picking on a personal trait, or their family) is beyond the pale…..but still allowed. I wouldn’t do that, but it’s just part of the world, and having expectations. It happens to us in the civilian world.
But I do believe there is less loyalty, across the board, in society and sports nowadays. At least as compared to 20-30 years ago.
Nobody should hold all the cards.
The problem of amateur status. Most of us will miss that. Most of us wanted to believe that the players were committed to the team, even in the face of knowing but not acknowledging that players were getting money from boosters or they'd be playing at Alabama or Georgia.
When a system is corrupt so long and ignored, chaos happens when it crumbles. We see it all the time in governments. A coup happens and everything is exposed but there's nobody "clean" to take over "pull things together" because dog eat dog corruption is all anyone knows.
The NCAA really is that way. Without the tight fist on the players and the selective ignoring of payments to those players, no one knows how to act in this new situation.
