Going into the 2006 matchup with Moeller, Byrnes had done the following.
Gone 57-2 over the previous four seasons
Hadn't lost in two years
Was ranked #2 in the country by USA Today
Had just defeated the #5 team in the country handily
Byrnes won 21-20. Moeller went 5-4 and lost in the first round of the playoffs after barely sneaking in.[/QUOTE]
Do you think the score would be that close this year?
Two things that I do not follow:
1) Recruiting
2) High school football outside of Ohio, mostly because it's largely an inferior product. Across the board, Texas and Florida are the only states that are at or above the level of Ohio. Ohio has the best playoff system in the country and an incredibly high level of play to match.
To answer your question, who knows? I've seen nationally-ranked teams play less than stellar Ohio teams and get involved in a bloodbath. My personal favorite involved Independence from NC and their obscene win streak coming to an end at the hands of an Elder team that went 7-3 and lost in the first round of the playoffs.
If you look at something like the Herbstreit Classic, the non-Ohio teams are a "Who's Who" of high school football. But a good chunk of the Ohio teams are middle-of-the-road. Last night's game featured a national powerhouse against a team that'll probably go 5-5 and miss the playoffs (or, if they get in, a first-round loss). They got hammered during the preseason by a D-3 school, a school that frankly could play in this thing any year and be more than respectable.
