Stars Matter - The Athletic

There is a HUGE disparity in the talent of three stars. It would be more telling to see how the P5 3s did. Lumping in the lowest three star, 3300th with the 301st. Much less of a spread amongst 5 stars, and still significantly less than 4 stars.

Maybe compare the top 300 3 stars vs the 4 stars. I would think it still favors the 4 but much closer.

And yet all the math and probability will not change the fact that 20% of 5* is still only 20% so there's no need in freaking out over not getting a 5* to commit. And no need to freak out because someone is rated a 3*. Just get as many of the best players as you can get, develop them, coach them, and then play ball....We do enjoy mindless blathering on Volnation.
You kind of (as in completely) missed the point of the article. Teams without numerous five-stars are not winning national championships; and neither will we as long as we continue not getting them.

Actually I completely got the point....get as many of the best players as possible so that you have backups when your starters get injured. As Majors said, you're only as strong as your weakest link. Teams getting 5* are also getting high 4*. But for recruiting services to brag about being 20% right on projecting the first round is a little much.

I’m doubting you went to duke, or Tennessee for that matter, after that statement. Just no.

Some have plenty of book sense but less common sense. Book sense is the technical know how but common sense is the real life application.

Historically speaking, I'd rather have all 4 stars. We could field a full team of disappointing 5 star busts in our history. Offense and defense. But before we get into the 3 and 4 star busts, there's only 30 5 stars to choose from every year.....

You can't rule out the ratings. Why else are we so excited about getting our 5 stars the last couple of years? And so far they seem to be developing pretty well. Sure, the ratings have natural limitations. They are a snapshot of talent and size at the age of 18. Some of these young men do continue to develop physically independently of the weight rooms and nutrition programs. Remember the basketball player David Robinson. He goes to Naval Academy an unheralded 6'5" HS basketball player and leaves a 6'11" All American. I don't think that was anything the Academy could claim credit for. The same thing happens in football, but, as noted by earlier comments, it is more likely to happen with a 6' DB than a 6'5" DL or OL.

You do have to give credit to the coaching they receive. Look at Bama's little dip the last 2 years that's occurring at the same time that his first tier staff all leave for head coaching jobs and take some of Satan's other coaches with them. There has undeniably been a drop. You've seen little Nicky begin to whine about being raided. But it's not been precipitous because the recruiting has generally continued at top 5 levels. And, while he's been angry about the staff instability, it was losing the recruiting wars with Smart that really lit him off. So he clearly cares about the 5 stars.

Finally it's clear that the ratings services are becoming better in their evaluations. True, that's probably a function of the more refined camp programs the colleges have developed that give the evaluators a chance to see these kids perform against better competition than they might otherwise face in their home programs. But it's still happening.
