Starting Defense for 2014

I'm worried about the Offensive and Defensive lines going into 2014. I think Tennessee will be 8-4 in 2014 but the lines still make Me nervous.

I would like to see another juco DT added, would make me less nervous, but I actually think we will be more suited to rush the passer next year

there will be less depth at DT, but Mo couch being out has given more reps to guys like Dobrien which will certainly help next year

getting blair and Mjackson being back next year are huge - they make me less concerned on the OL - we have some capable parts to fit around them too

DW looks like he can play the other G, also has more athleticism which is nice for this system - Crowder looks capable at C - we just need to find a RT out of kerby/Asanders/juco OT not yet signed - which I think is very doable

You also have to remember that when teams are scared of the skill positions - and these will be much upgraded next year - it makes the OL look better than they may be

we play nickel a lot so I think it makes sense to put that nickel corner as a starter - the newcomers will provide a huge upgrade there next year imo

I sure hope so. Toney and Swafford don't have enough speed and/or experience. They have played hard and very well at times, but an upgrade is needed.

If Tiny stays:

LT Tiny
LG Jackson
C Crowder
RG Weisman
RT Blair

If Tiny leaves and UT gets Gennesy:

LT Blair
LG Jackson
C Crowder
RG Weisman
RT Gennesy

either of those lines would be just as good in this system as our OL is this year - jmo

It wouldn't surprise me that, if AJ leaves and a FR MLB isn't ready and JRM doesn't project out well at LB that we just play Maggitt/Weatherd at LB and go to Nickel.

Because our CB roster will be:

Sutton, Coleman, Riyahd Jones, Mike Williams, Toney and incoming FR Gaulden, Payne and Moseley.

That's actually pretty good starter/depth. Remember that both Jones/Williams were both projected CB1 but fell out due to injuries. With a full off-season they could be starters opposite Sutton with Coleman at Nickel.

Especially Williams who has extremely legit speed. His 400m time, converted to yards, would be a sustained 4.38 40'.

Yeah, I think the biggest thing is the fact that they will have spent a full year in the ZBS system under Mahoney as well as the tailored S&C program to fit the stark differences between last years system and this years.

Remember, our current OL had to lose almost a combined 200lbs to be able to acclimate to the faster pace as well as different blocking requirements.

QB- Worley
RB- Lane/ Hurd(EE)
WR- North
WR- Pearson/ Croom
WR- Howard
TE- Downs

LT- Richardson
LG- Jackson
C- Crowder/ Thomas(EE)
RG- Weisman
RT- Blair (EE)

DE- Vereen

DT-Saulsberry/ JUCO DT
DE- Lambert (EE)

OLB- Maggitt

Honestly looks like a pretty good team. The best part is there's a lot of those positions that could go in other directions because of the talent we have coming in. Excited about the future.

If we want to go with a JRM at WLB, could you see Maggit play WDE, I think that was the position he was projected at on Rivals a few years ago?

I've heard some rumblings that if Gennesy commits, he might play LT and have Blair play RT.

Mostly skilled positions will be the same.

TB: Lane, but depth becomes an issue there, probably a true freshman backing him up(Hurd?,Paulk).

WR: North, Howard, Pearson, Croom/Smith

QB: Worley's to lose.

TE Downs/Quinn/Branisel

The OL will be 4 or 5 new starters. I'm guessing but something like this.

LT Richardson/Blair
G Jackson
C Crowder
G Pair/Sanders?
T Blair/Kerbyson

I think you shy away from playing a true freshman on the line if you can help it

.

Paulks injury is scary to me. Hope we get another RB

Lotta people overlooking Justus Pickett. He has to sit out this year per transferring rules, but since he hasn't used his redshirt, they can use it this year and he can play two years here. He was one of the first to get his stripe off and IMO if he had been cleared, he would be in the rotation with Neal and Lane. I think next year it's Lane and Pickett with Hurd, Smith, and Hill backing up and Paulk either grayshirting or redshirting due to injury. JMO, though.

Gaulden will be the starting nickel the day he steps foot on campus, per Buck Fitzgerald.

Perfect spot for him. Speed, hard hitter, and excellent pursuit. The kid is a monster!! He has over 140 tackles this season which is unreal

I'm pretty sure that has been the case all season, but we obviously saw how well it worked out when the 2nd best QB, according to the coaches evaluation, got his opportunity to start.

5 Yards passing and 3 INT in a half.

He got completions to someonbe I guess. Wrong color jersey though..........

correct, it was a big shift for them to move to this scheme and in this scheme you honestly don't guys as NFL ready as ours were

same type of situation as big dan - some 3-4 NFL team is going to love what he brings - and he is such a talented player that he will be on the field, but since he isnt a perfect fit scheme wise the dropoff next year won't be as noticeable as many on here seem to think

again jmo but i think we will be just fine on the lines and actually better able to rush the passer in 2014

I think Helm starts day 1 - and if not day 1 definitely as we move a couple games into the season

also - the staff wants a disruptive force at the non NG DT spot - so I just don't see any way Lambert doesnt end up there

Compare the projected 2 deep and 3 deep vs this year for 14 and you will see the improvement to the roster.. Same for 15.

Depending if Bates/Weatherd are ready and adapt quickly, Id like to move AJ to DE. I think thats where he'll play at the next level anyway

Safeties: McNeil and Randolph

CBs: Coleman and Sutton

Nickel: up for grabs. Could be Toney again, could be Foreman/R Jones/Gaulden/E Mosley/one of the Berrys

OLBs: Maggit and Weatherd/JRM. Could see some Bates. Maybe a little J King.

MLB: I think AJ comes back. If not him, then the spot is up for grabs for Bynum/Bates/Mouhon/Bryant/J King.

Leo: Vereen/Lewis/Henderson

DT: Saulsberry/Lambert/Carr (not sure if Lambert plays DE or DT though)

NG: O'brien/Clark/Possible future JUCO commit

DE: Jordan Smith/Lambert/J Miller

Am I leaving anybody out? If AJ comes back, then our only real question marks should be at Nickel and the DL (because there's a possibility a future starter hasn't commited yet and we're still unsure where Lambert lines up when it's all said and done).

TK2!!!!! Can't wait!

What do y'all think the Offense will look like in 2014? If I were CBJ I would make the quarterback position wide open to competition.

The QB job will be up for grabs but I hope Jones picks one guy and sticks with him. I don't like the whole whoever has the best week of practice starts mentality. Whoever wins the starting job needs to keep it unless there is a catastrophic meltdown.

Wildly speculative but here's my shot at it:

RDE: Vereen
DT: Saulsberry
DT: O'Brien
LDE: Lambert (JUCO)

WLB: Maggitt
MLB: AJ
SLB: Weatherd

CB: Sutton
SS: McNeil
FS: Randolph
CB: Coleman/Jones/Williams

All have seen good amounts of playing time. I think we'll miss Walls/Smith at DE but Vereen has played very well in his limited time in and Lambert is a highly rated JUCO. Saulsberry was playing very well before his injury and O'Brien/Carr should provide good starter/rotation opposite Saulsberry. Hard to project. O'Brien has played this year... Carr hasn't. Have to project O'Brien.

I don't think AJ will go pro quite yet. He might. If so, Christian Harris might slide over. A FR like Bryant/Mouhan or Garrett (should he commit) could start. Hard to tell.

Saulsberry will not make it to first string, and Coleman will be replaced for sure unless he has a monumental spring and summer camp.
