Starting Defense for 2014

Does anybody think that Maggitt will move down to DE next year? I think it would be a great fit for him, and given our nice recruitment of LB's, it's a viable option.

Saulsberry will not make it to first string, and Coleman will be replaced for sure unless he has a monumental spring and summer camp.

Saulsberry is not half-bad; I'd be fine with him starting there. But if we have someone even better -- a stronger Carr or a Juco coming in -- more power to them.

I definitely think TKjr takes a spot in the backfield, and Gaulden will be playing nickel CB right away at the very least.

Depending if Bates/Weatherd are ready and adapt quickly, Id like to move AJ to DE. I think thats where he'll play at the next level anyway

AJ can't get off a block from receivers and fullbacks.

What makes you think he will be able to get off blocks from offensive tackles and tight ends in the NFL?

I'd like to see JRM more. I think he would be a good OLB if he beefs up a little bit

The QB job will be up for grabs but I hope Jones picks one guy and sticks with him. I don't like the whole whoever has the best week of practice starts mentality. Whoever wins the starting job needs to keep it unless there is a catastrophic meltdown.

At this point, I want to see Ferguson play just so the mindless postings about such-and-such QB being the savior and "why won't Butch pull so-and-so/put so-and-so in" will stop.

Saulsberry will not make it to first string,
Based on what and who do you think replaces him? Before the injury he was UT's best DT this year by a pretty wide margin. Any new comer would more likely push O'Brien and Clark out than Saulsberry.

and Coleman will be replaced for sure unless he has a monumental spring and summer camp.

I have heard this tune before. Freshmen have a very difficult time overtaking Srs and no one on the roster to include Sutton seriously pushed Coleman for a starting job at any point this year. If he is moved off CB it would probably be to nickel because a Fr, Jones, or Williams made that possible.

Honestly looks like a pretty good team. The best part is there's a lot of those positions that could go in other directions because of the talent we have coming in. Excited about the future.

Stupid question. What is EE? Early Enroll?

I think McNeil and Coleman are pushed out of the lineup.

We KNOW that the current LB and DB crop can't do the job on the field. It would seem that any freshman that can think straight and learns the system, especially if he is an early enrollee, will get a good chance to start next year. We are so weak in both these areas with the current guys on the team.

LOL:lolabove:

This is the folly of putting too much faith in HS recruits.

The consensus among the "experts" here was that McNeil was the next Eric Berry when he signed... "Starter from day 1". He was supposed a great hitter with great speed and instincts.

Now he's a "no talent" who can't be coached up. "Too slow"....

McNeil has talent. He needs coaching and development to go with the experience he's getting.

It's not JUST confidence in the incoming recruits. It's also lack of confidence in those two after watching them the last two years.

Kelly is a better athlete than McNeil. Could see him winning that job. Gaulden is wildcard in secondary.

Carr will also be prominent in tackle rotation.

Yeah, but say AJ stays. Would you really want 2 freshman LBs back there with AJ? Maggitt is the best LB we have, imo. Keep him back there.

I think McNeil are gonna have some tough competition at Safety. We have a great players coming in at that position.

True, however I would like to see some situational packages where they lined Maggitt up at DE. I do agree with you in him being our best LB.
