State of recruiting this year IMO?

I think it's absolutely false that we have to land a top 10 class this year in order to rebuild this program. While it would be nice, and it would make this an easier thing to accomplish. Just as it is true top 10 talent in the hands of skilled coaches is a recipe for a NC, it is also true that it is possible to squander top 10 talent (Texas, UF,USC). What is true is that top 20 talent in the hands of a skilled coaching staff wins games consistently. Our first step back from where we are now, probably isn't going to be a NC, probably not even an SECC, but more than likely it will be the name UT back inside the top 25 where it belongs. We don't have to have a top 10 recruiting class to get there or rebuild this program. I have played the devil's advocate on here from time to time, but lets all face some facts.

1. We can't change the past, the decision for Derek (edit) Dooley to be our HFC has been made period and end of story. Like it or not.

2. We can tell absolutely nothing about his abilities as a head coach right now, based on his results at La Tech or UT 2010. We do have reasons to believe he has assembled an excellent group of assistants based on their past performances, so don't judge them based on talent they are coaching that they didn't necessarily recruit. Good coach/player relations mixed with solid coaching wins SECC.

3. If we can land a top 20 recruiting class it will be a good start if our coaching staff is capable of taking that top 20 talent and the top 10 talent from 2009 and coach those players to their potential.

4. If recruits begin to see results by this staff the 5* talent will come just like they did in the 1990's when all of the above was happening; because winners like to play for winners.

We are UT and whether in 2 years or 5 years we will be back. Until that time we can all discuss what's happening now, good or bad. We can discuss who should be QB and have fun. We can also discuss if Derek Dooley has what it takes, but the truth is, none of us can predict what this staff can or cannot do with this program based on the play of this team this year. Just my thoughts.

I might unblock SGM to see what he has to say about this one.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be easier, I'm just saying with the right coaching staff it isn't mandantory. Is this staff good enough? I/we don't know.

Recruiting is key. The longer is takes to get talent in here, the longer it will take to rebuild the program. This will kill Dooley if he doesn't succeed.

No arguments there. It would be faster with well coached top 10 talent. If indeed this group of coaches can coach, I have feeling a few 5* recruits will begin to show up on campus by 2012. If they can't coach... well I think we all know how that ends.

I don't believe the La Tech record alone can be the criteria for Dooley's success or failure at UT. He didn't have the tradition, facilities, money for staff or players that he will have here. Satan himself probably would have similar results at La Tech.

DD has been around successful programs most of his life and he is intelligent enough to see what works and what doesn't. Whether or not he will implement the success remains to be seen, but he has the background to do it. I don't believe any of the Messiah named coaches that some wanted here would have fared any better this year than has DD. At least he had the gonads to take the job when others wouldn't. Yes, I believe money had a lot to do with his decision, but he jumped at the challenge. I am willing to give him a chance to succeed because I don't have another choice at this time and I am glad of a lot of negavols don't have a say either.

I hope our fans will get behind our kids. Their backs are against the wall through no fault of their on. They need to hold their heads up and play like winners while they are losing. That's a tough one for Dooley or anyone else to overcome. I hope he is the one who can pull it off.

It is because of the question mark in the thread title.

Ahhh thank you. I am a little slow. I used "?" because there are so many different opinions out there surrounding recruiting, which one is right? I was throwing another theory out there as a fact, when in reality it's just my opinion. So the "?" was my attempt at sarcasim. FAIL. I just have to laugh at my stupidity and move on.

Personally I am tired of chasing the stars and following all these prima donas and want to see some home grown talent shine.

Plenty of good young players in TN and GA we don't need to go across the country to grab guys who won't pour their heart into the T.

Also, the difference between 3 and 4 stars is negligible at the end of the day.

Absolutely agree! This will be the measuring stick by which Dooley's performance will have to be measured for the short term, play on the field in the long term.

I don't know whether he has what it takes either, I believe both sides of the issue have made some very relevant points. Of course, discussions about CDD's ability aside, I will support whoever is running our team, as well as the team itself no matter what.

I for 1 am extremely excited to see where we are next year at this time!

This is an excellent statement and it points out the tuff sale Dooley has had to make to this group of JR's and SRs o get them motivated to play against all odds. They've been through and seen a lot while they've been here. I can't imagine a much more disheartened football than the one Dooley met his first day on the job. Before he could even begin to coach them, he had to gain their trust, which is I'm sure an ongoing process.

This is true. I think many of us who aren't convinced are looking for something which will allow us to hang our hopes on, rather than Dooley's pedigree or his assisatnt's past successes. I think everyone is just trying to see a glimpse of hope anywhere that DD is the guy to turn this around. In all of the negavol's defense, there doesn't seem to be much for us/them to hang their hopes on as far as results go on any front. The route we are taking on the recruiting front with all of the 3* talent, means we are doing this the hard way so we are going to have to out coach the majority of the coaches in the SEC, and admitidly we haven't seen evidence of this either.

I, like all other vol fans, want to get a top 5 recruiting class every year. Based on what has happened to our beloved program over the past 5-7 years, I dont expect it though. How could I? UT has not been prudent in the NC race for several years, we have had 3 coaches in 3 years, multiple off the field issues and other minors issues. I dont know how anyone can really expect this from CDD and staff. I dont understand how fans can get pissed off when we dont get the elite talent. We are not an elite program right now. The good players we get come here for our tradition, our facilities, our coaches, and the possibility of playing early. A few recruits really want to turn the program around I'm sure, but right now we are not a hot program, as much as it hurts me to say this. The players we get are not thinking about winning the SECC or BCS at UT in the next 2 years. We should be happy when we get a 4 star recruit and hope our coaches can coach them up and turn the program around and start winning some games and THEN SECC and BSCC. It is a work in progress.
