The bold says it all. TN should be able to hire a BB coach, not a great young mind to learn on the job. A great young mind should learn how to do his job at a smaller program, not at a major university.

Boy, I bet Duke just HATES hiring a great young mind with no NCAA appearances and at best average record at Army that many years ago. God, it must suck to be them.

You can offer whoever you want. There is no limit. At some point you have to land more than one guy ever other year.

I'm excited to see his '14 class. We are in very good position for some extremely good players. If CCM signs Lyle I can't wait for the haters to eat crow

If Barton was as awful as BOP is inferring this team won't make the dance...you've got to have at least a serviceable PG to make the dance, and yes Barton will be a serviceable PG.

On the flip side...if Golden was as "golden" as BOP is saying he should've led last years team to the dance single handily...not choked in the SECT against Bama (for the 3rd time in the same season).

Yeah, but it didn't take Pearl very long that he needed to recruit elite talent. He realized that TN was a big program not some mid-major school.

Honestly, I felt when CCM was hired, he thought he could recruit mid talent and develop them. That's not a problem if he could actually develop players and/or make the current ones progress in their careers. Also, that wouldn't be a problem if TN didn't expect faster results.

The fact that CCM has finally started to realize he NEEDS to go after the best makes me feel better..but the fact that it took this long for him to realize it, is just plain terrible. Who wants a guy that thinks he can evaluate talent but really can't where the talent is part of your success?

I know this is why message boards can be fun, but the more you feed him, the more he enjoys. If one hasn't seen the weaknesses of Trae Golden, then there is nothing you can do for them. I have said many times for a while now that Golden was part of our problem. Just a poor decision-maker and a huge liability on defense. I think the PG for MTSU is still driving past him. It especially hurts when Martin primarily uses man to man.

I am not saying that Barton is a better individual player, but consistent and quality guard play is so key in college basketball. I think he will provide our team with much better skills to run our offense. If others don't agree, so be it. They are the types that will also argue that the sky is not blue. I guess we will really see in about 6 months.

I believe that Pearl started that recruiting process.

I'm not talking about LANDING. You said RECRUITING anyways. I'm referring to who CCM constantly recruits. You just said that he's recruiting a top player. that should be a "no brainer".

Uhm ok...Martin had to recruit Stokes, and did.

He landed a top recruit last class in Hubbs, and was after another one in Nichols....so what's your point?

The class before that he was after and landed Stokes.

His very first class he was after a guy who about to go top 10 in the NBA draft, you may recognize the name...Otto Porter.

He has targeted top recruits since day 1, he just hasn't landed enough quality recruits. My original post was in reponse to the poster saying Martin doesn't see the PG as a priority...he obviously does if the guy he wants most in next years class happens to be a hell of a PG.

I just took your response as if CCM finally started to recruit top talent for 2014. I honestly don't care if a coach misses out on top talent as long as the recruit has TN in his top 5 or has STRONG interest. Then I could say, oh well, "the coach did his best". Maybe I think TN is better than constantly getting 2-3 star recruits. I feel like CCM approaches the 2-3 star recruits too early and miss out on building relationships on the 4-5 stars. He did well with Hubbs but did he actually recruit Hubbs or did another coach do that?

Kid : Hey Coach? What does TN have to offer?
CCM: I will take care of you like my son.
Kid : O.k. Cool, but what about playing time?
CCM: Well, if you are good you'll get a lot of playing time, but if you suck, I'll have to figure out a way to lead you out the door.
Kid: Understood.. but what about Championships? I want to be on a championship team!
CCM: We only go for the NIT, cool?

You should pay a little more attention to the recruiting process. Lyle is a top 20 recruit and one of the best pgs in the nation. CCM has been recruiting him for YEARS and we are easily one of his favorites. Looney is a top 10 recruit and CCM has been recruiting him for years as well. Having Maymon gives us an advantage there too. He has been quiet about his recruitment but most figure that he thinks very highly of Tennessee and we are seriously considered.

Fact is, CCM is in on some pretty big name recruits right now. To say that he doesn't start he early relationships with big names is just stupid when CCM has been in on Lyle since he was in 8th grade.

You obviously don't realize that Martin has been the coach for two calendar years now. Basketball recruiting starts early...much earlier than football, although football is moving up, too. Martin was past recruiting any high school juniors or seniors when he got there. Hubbs was just finishing his sophomore year. We don't even have this conversation if we land Nichols, and I really thought it was all but over.

Martin recruited E'twan Moore and Jujuan Johnson to Purdue. He has shown he can recruit. 2014 will be telling with what level of a player he can bring in.
