Still have faith in Cuonzo Martin?

The fact he wasn't targeted for a job this offseason surprised me. With his west coast ties I really would've thought USC would've been interested.

They didn't want to be seen as hiring UCLA's leftovers. Would have been a much better hire than either LA team actually made, though.

Funny that winning didn't matter when Jerry Green was here. I was actually not in favor of firing him because a successful BB coach at UT is few and far between.

I hated those teams, because you always knew the collapse was coming. I think even an average coach would have had multiple Sweet 16s with those rosters.

I will never forgive him or Tony Harris for that UNC game. Just dreadful.

i actually believe Green underachieved and also had some discipline issues with the players. its easy to say he shouldnt have been fired when you look at the next hire made. but its obvious Green wasnt that great of the coach as he hasnt been hired as a head coach since. you put a good coach with those teams and UT has a final 4 on their resume, maybe more.

Other than the Elite Eight, his results match up directly with Pearl surprisingly enough.

I know the idea was that he underachieved and had discipline problems, but based on W/L record, no way he deserved to be fired.

Really? You think?

Green's? Yup.

They both made the NCAAT every year.

They both won a conference championship.

Pearl's win percentage: 72.1%

Green's win percentage: 71.2%

They both made the second round 50% of the time.

Pearl did have a better SEC record:

Pearl: 67.7%

Green: 64.1%

I watched those teams and I was so proud when we got a number one ranking by Ap and coaches pole and Green saying how proud he was of the team. I was also proud of winning the preseason NIT when Green was here. And how about all those #1 ranked teams we beat when Green was here.
You have to be kidding.

I think the teams the Pearl beat were far superior to what Jerry Green's teams were able to do. Pearl's teams went in as underdogs against great teams and came out on top way more than they should have.

Which is why he probably wasn't fired solely on his win loss record. Just like delmonico there was more to it

Also greens teams are vastly more talented than pearls and the fact green hasn't been hired as a head coach anywhere goes to show what the coaching world thinks of his abilities. He had the easiest road ever to a final 4 yet blew it. It's a common saying, but it didn't take a genius coach to win with greens guys.

Bingo. And it came from prep work and motivation. A good coach gets the most out of his players.

Most notable, Swiperboy playing for Tyler Smith.
Hard to top that one.

Faith somewhat restored with Antonio a Vol.
Could be a very BIG season.

He does take any criticizing very personal and you are not even in the first dozen or so of posters to notice this.

It goes both ways. If something good happens for Cuonzo's basketball program, I can bet almost anything that I won't find you joining in the celebration.

I think it's mainly because people get entrenched in their roles. Once you take a side on Cuonzo on one issue, there's pressure to keep doing it or get labeled a flip-flopper. So the end result is that you end up criticizing Martin and BTO ends up defending him almost every time. In reality, Martin's tenure so far has pretty much just been "meh." He's twice exceeded my expectations entering the season (once we lost Maymon), but we've also lost plenty of games we shouldn't have and haven't made the tourney. He's no Buzz Peterson, but he's not a Final Four coach either.

I think the difference is with Pearl no matter who the competition was you thought you had a chance to win. With Cuonzo no matter who the competition is you know there's a good chance you'll lose.

I got behind Martin the first year when we got stokes and started winning and then fell out with him when we began repeating what happened the previous year. My argument has in been in response to people who refuse to acknowledge having any problems at all with his coaching. Maymon is a good player, but the second coming of Wes Unseld he's not. I thought we had enough talent both years to go dancing and it seems we are doomed to return to mediocrity.

Where are all these Martin shills on here? I haven't seen any.

I expect a "look in the mirror" response.

We had the talent to make it before our Preseason 1st team all SEC player went out for the season. With Maymon we win a couple more games. You don't just have a 14 ppg game guy and leader of your team go out and not expect struggles. No excuse for the Georgia L's or even the Ole Miss one away. But still we finally have a full roster or should have at least. If Martin doesn't win at a high rate this year then I will be right with you.

I am not arguing that Jerry Green was a great coach.

My point was that based on the results of the team, Green should not have been fired.

Good point.

I still felt like we got screwed for the tourney this year.

If I told people we'd win 20 games without Maymon, I think people would have been ecstatic. It just ended up not working out.
