Funny that winning didn't matter when Jerry Green was here. I was actually not in favor of firing him because a successful BB coach at UT is few and far between.
i actually believe Green underachieved and also had some discipline issues with the players. its easy to say he shouldnt have been fired when you look at the next hire made. but its obvious Green wasnt that great of the coach as he hasnt been hired as a head coach since. you put a good coach with those teams and UT has a final 4 on their resume, maybe more.
Other than the Elite Eight, his results match up directly with Pearl surprisingly enough.

Really? You think?
Green's? Yup.
They both made the NCAAT every year.
They both won a conference championship.
Pearl's win percentage: 72.1%
Green's win percentage: 71.2%
They both made the second round 50% of the time.

I know the idea was that he underachieved and had discipline problems, but based on W/L record, no way he deserved to be fired.

He does take any criticizing very personal and you are not even in the first dozen or so of posters to notice this.
It goes both ways. If something good happens for Cuonzo's basketball program, I can bet almost anything that I won't find you joining in the celebration.
I think it's mainly because people get entrenched in their roles. Once you take a side on Cuonzo on one issue, there's pressure to keep doing it or get labeled a flip-flopper. So the end result is that you end up criticizing Martin and BTO ends up defending him almost every time. In reality, Martin's tenure so far has pretty much just been "meh." He's twice exceeded my expectations entering the season (once we lost Maymon), but we've also lost plenty of games we shouldn't have and haven't made the tourney. He's no Buzz Peterson, but he's not a Final Four coach either.
I got behind Martin the first year when we got stokes and started winning and then fell out with him when we began repeating what happened the previous year. My argument has in been in response to people who refuse to acknowledge having any problems at all with his coaching. Maymon is a good player, but the second coming of Wes Unseld he's not. I thought we had enough talent both years to go dancing and it seems we are doomed to return to mediocrity.

I think the teams the Pearl beat were far superior to what Jerry Green's teams were able to do. Pearl's teams went in as underdogs against great teams and came out on top way more than they should have.
