Stokes' Flaws

Yeah I know then after he misses the screen he sorta looks around with a dumbfounded look on his face like what just happened? But he will be a monster before to long.

Okay, so it's very easy to see just how good stokes is.

So, I wanted to talk a bit about what he needs to improve.

The only thing I have an issue with at this point is his free throw shooting.

His pre-shot routine is awful and the shot never looks good coming off his hands like it does when he is shooting a J.

What else have you all noticed about his game that needs improvement?

For the record, this is not a negative thread, just a different view. I think he is going to be a stud. Right now he is the best player UT has.

He hit his FTs when it counted. But yes, his FT shooting could get better. He hasn't taken many, so as a percentage, it doesn't look impressive.

He needs to work on his endurance. He isn't used to the speed of the game quite yet, so it is taking a toll on him.

he wears a size 20 shoe so I would imagine he has giant hands as well.

Him shooting a free throw is probably comparable to some of us gripping a tennis ball, pretty hard to get a good rotation with a tennis ball

He needs to learn how to set up a screen properly. Every time he sets a screen he never blocks anybody he misses by 2 feet. Anybody else notice he always misses his man when setting a screen?

I think some of us are used to watching Maymon set those super hard illegal screens all the time lol

There is a fine line between a successful screen and a foul call. Hall is called at least once a game for setting a moving screen. Give him time to acclamate.

Too early. Maturity...Did notice the conditioning in the first half and needed a blow for a few....but he is solid...two games in see how he continues to grow....over the season...if he improves which he will, he is going to be a force at the end of the season and will peak at the right time. Tournament... Hope we get there and we have an outside shot right now....3 to 5 of those loses to Ky, Pitt, Miss St, Memphis, Oakland, Charleston, or Austin Peay turn out and we are in on the bubble at least. It is uphill but this team can compete with anybody...CCM doing a great job......

Regardless of whatever flaws you people want to point out, Stokes is the best player on our team right now and he should be playing High School ball. WIthout him, we're 8-11 right now. Thank the good Lord above he chose to come to UT, otherwise, I'm not sure our typical inpatient fanbase would have given Cuonzo enough time to show that he actually was a great hire for this university.

protect the ball when he's fed in the paint. He instantly draws help from the defense and id imagine you'll rarely see stokes making a move one on one unless he's taking it off the dribble as soon as he gets it.

Needs to screen better

The only thing I see he needs to improve is the free throw shooting. Defense will come with more playing time and coaching by CCM. Still it ain't bad now. As far as conditioning goes, I believe CCM said that he was in great shape coming into to practice. I too noticed that he needed a blow before the half yesterday, but didn't he play most of the half? Seemed like everyone else got a rest before he did. I could see him being tired. Also on the screen, doesn't it sorta take two to make one work effectively? If he's two feet off, shouldn't the other player move into him more in order to rub the defender off? I think he is going to be the best big man ever at Tennessee. I think he is better than Harris already!!! Plays better defense than Harris did at the same point in their careers. I also think he is tougher inside then Harris was at the same point. Just wish he was staying all four years. I hate one and dones. At least he will be here two seasons... I hope! Just my two cents worth.

Considering he just turned 18 and hasn't played in a basketball game since this summer and his 1st 3 games were against UK, UGA on the road, and UConn, I think the young man is doing just fine!

Hell, in one week he became our best player AND he's only going to get better.

Look at how he plays in late Feb. and then go back and watch the UK game. It will be night and day.

You should be horse whipped for even thinking about pointing out flaws at this point in his UT career! :finger3:

Why?

Must he be perfect in every fans eye because he is young in his UT career.

Get over yourself. Re read my OP. I clearly said he is UT's best player and will be a stud.

Just that IMO he has a flawed pre-shot FT routine and that his consistency at the line could get better.

It's nice that he has something to improve on.

:good!:

I think I agree with you about Jarnell being a better defender than Tobais already. That's one area of Tobais' game that was really lacking. How much of that can be attributed at this point to Stokes' size and how much can be attributed to actual defensive skill? I don't know. All I know is I've seen him alter several shots near the rim without actually touching the opposing player or the ball. He's definitely made people apprehensive about coming into the paint.

I'm not ready to say he's better than Tobias yet offensively. Offense is Tobais' game, though. Stokes looks to be the better all around player.

His only flaw is the number he wears. I would hate to see Lofton's number get overshadowed by Stokes.

He will continue to improve week by week, but the most noticable gain will be in the offseason IMO. As for his FT%... Guys, he hasn't played but 3 games in an NCAA arena! The backdrop of a concrete wall behind the backboard in HS is not nearly as mentally challenging as crazed fans going nuts and the space behind the backboard can really alter your depth perception. IMO it is merely an adjustment that will come in due time. I imagine his pre-shot routine has been the same for years and altering that at this point may not do any good.
