Stokes' Flaws

If I recall correctly, Lofton doesn't have the accolades needed to have his number retired.

according to UT website:

3. A minimum of five years must pass between the conclusion of a candidate’s UT
basketball career and consideration for this honor.

5. The highest honor is to have a number or jersey retired. For this to happen, the standards should be very high. The recommendation is that a player must achieve two of the following awards:
• First team All America as recognized in the University of Tennessee
basketball media guide.
• SEC player of the Year as recognized in the University of Tennessee
basketball media guide
• Member of an Olympic basketball team
• NBA or ABA All Star team.

7. For modification of these criteria for number retirement, the suggested modification must be unanimously approved by the Committee and forwarded to the Athletics Board at its Fall meeting. Unanimous vote of the Athletics Board members must ratify said modification.

i know he won sec player of the year and i know he was pre-season 1st team all american his senior i dont know if theyd count that. in any matter if im understand aritcle 7 correctly at the discretion of the committee they can vote a player who doesnt meet the criteria.

It's a shame IMO, but that is correct. IIRC he has to be an all-star in his sport professionally to have his # retired.

no just 2 of the 5 on the list, if ut considered pre-season 1st team all american as meeting their requirment he would meet criteria. if not, according to article 7 the committee can vote to retire a number of a player whose accolades do not meet the set requirments. FWIW

Pre-season AA doesn't count.

Pre-season AA doesn't count.

i didnt figure that it would but the fact that they have the clause in there that basically allows them to vote in anyone they want may come into play. this is the committee:
The Committee shall consist of the Director of Men’s Athletics, the President of The University of Tennessee, the Chairman of the Athletics Committee of the Board of Trustees, and the President of the UT Letterman’s Association (T-Club).

lofton is loved by everyone around UT, i would be very surprised if someone would vote against him.

If you can change the criteria at any time, why have the criteria to begin with? Changing rules diminishes the accomplishment of getting your number retired.

Lofton was a great college player and represented Tennessee with class and dignity. Having said that, he doesn't meet the requirements so his number shouldn't be retired.

i understand what you are saying and i understand it completely. i think in lofton's case though there are extenuating circumstances at play. Lofton was a pre-season AA heading into his senior year, he was diagnosed with cancer and clearly wasnt able to play to the level he was at, even so he still reached 3rd team AA honors. i think in the case you could make an exception, if they dont its understandable and have a good reason, if they do they also have a good reason, i dont feel either decision would be wrong. i was simply just pointing out that even though he doesnt meet the requirment his number can still be retired.

If there was ever someone to file an exception to the criteria from the Outlive campaign to all the moments he created and implanted in our minds, Lofton would be #1 on my list.

exactly thats my point. they make loop holes like this for rare occasions that may occur so that you have a way around the requirments. this is a very rare occasion and one in which i think is a perfect example as to why they throw that part in that they can vote a guy in who doesnt meet requirments. its not like there is another guy i can think of who would fit the description of someone else who should get voted in so in the history of UT it's just lofton that i can think of thatd be deserving of an exception. he has to be out of school 5 years before it can even be discussed though so it'll be a few more years before we ever hear anything.
