Stokes practice notes

What wouldbe the harm in letting him play a couple of minutes. If he does well, let him play a little more, if he doesn't, take him out. He would not do any worse than most of our players.

It's a complete smokescreen. I promise. He might not play Thursday, but he'll play Saturday.

By the way, if Jarnell was 6'10 and not 6'8, he would probably be a top 10 draft pick for 2013, and a top five prospect.

i brought this up in another thread i completely agree with you and think it would be awesome to see if he were to up to about 6' 11" since he has a decent outside touch already and handles.

as far as a smokescreen i was just having a similar conversation with a friend. i think depending on the flow of a game he may see a few minutes thursday, but i fully expect to see him get a few minutes in spurts off the bench saturday.

Based on what I have seen out of Coach Martin so far, if he says Stokes isn't going to play this week, I would bet Stokes doesn't play this week. He doesn't strike me as a man that says anything he doesn't mean 100%.

If he could be 6'11 and define his outside game, he'll be a top five pick.

I really don't know what to expect from him this year, but I fully expect next year for him to be a beast. With his work ethic and the faith I have in the staff I think he will be an amazing!

Here to hoping!!!

By 21, Stokes will be 280 and at least 6'10"... that is, unless he defies science and statistics. That shoe size is too much to contain itself withing a 6'8", 260 pound body.

I'm just glad he is a Vol. I just hope that some of our fans don't crucify him if it takes him a while to get things going. It would be very difficult to jump in mid-season like he is doing.

CCM said Stokes probably wouldn't play this week. He didn't say that he definitely will not play. Probably leaves the door open.

Off the top of my head the only one that i can think of recently is the dawkins kid from duke. he i believe is a sophmore this year, last year is when he came in early. he was a solid contributor right away and played quite a bit in the ncaa tourney for them. it's a bit different his game being primarily a shooter but his scenario was the same as stokes.

This :good!:

If I remember correctly, didn't he play a majority of his season as a 17 y/o? I remember him blowing up on an ACC team and Vitale kept foaming out the mouth, talking about how he should still be in HS and playing on a HS team.

Yes that is about exactly what I remembered was good Ike vitale absolutely freaking out about this kid. He kept repeating himself saying how this kid should be at his hs prom and blah blah blah.

I fear the unrational bunch that have already sculpted his bust in bronze will be in for a letdown at the beginning. Those saying "he's our best player immediately," or "he's a sure-fire, can't miss talent" will be in for an adjustment period. Like you said, I hope they don't fall off the wagon when he is putting up 6 pts and 4 rebs through January.

This.

I honestly believe he will be a top 2-3 player on the team the moment he steps on the floor. However, if he isn't I won't be upset and neither should our fans.

He is still a kid, plain and simple. He should be looking for a prom date right now.

I really hope people stay level headed about this kid and keep expectations realistic. I think people are going to want atleast a Tobias type impact 14/6 every night and that's not fair. What we get from him this year is just a plus in my mind, we didn't think we would have him and he hasn't played ball in awhile.

With that being said though, I fully expect for him to be no less than an all-sec caliber player next year. He has the right attitude and work ethic to be atleast that, and I think he would expect nothing less of himself.

this kid is huge. Talk about a frame. Can't wait to see his out there once he gets familiar with the system.

Videos: Jarnell Stokes' first day of practice with the Vols - Knoxville, TN | GoVolsXtra

I would LOVE to have him out there against Uk I just don't know if it will happen. Maymon and Stokes though are 2 HUGE men, that will absolutely pound the opposition. These 2 I think could push uni-brow from UK around as well as Terrence jones with ease. From how Martin wants his bigs to be physical as you saw against Florida, these 2 guys we have are going to be fun to watch down on the blocks.

I think Stokes can play right now and have as big an impact as B Williams had for us. Williams had his moments and looking back I think Williams played a big part of our team.

Williams was very frustrating some nights looking like a beast and others just disappearing. From a production standpoint there may be a comparison initially but that's it. If I had to bet someone's money on stokes stats through the end of this season I'd say somewhere around 9ppg 5rpg 2 ast.

He should still be in high school, but he's an overachiever in the classroom

If he's intelligent then he's not an overachiever. An overachiever is someone with C grade intelligence that makes As. An underachiever is someone with A grade intelligence who gets Cs. There are tons and tons of high school students across the nation who could graduate at mid-year if they needed/wanted to for some reason

yea i suppose it is definitely possible that he wont grow anymore we're all just kind of assuming. Usually the big feet are a sign of your heighth but im sure there are definitely exceptions. Shaq was 6' 7" at age 16 and when he hit 21 he was up to 7' 1".

My only hope is he aint soft. I'm sick of these big soft men. With a beast frame a gifted athletic ability, I hope he explodes to the rim and just hammers every dunk he gets. I'm excited about this kid!
