Stop doubting a tall RB!

Just looking at Derrick Henry and Jalen Hurd, it is obvious that Henry is much thicker and more muscular, with about the same speed. Hurd is around 225 to 230 at most. Henry is at 238-240 I believe. You can't compare the two just on height alone. What scares me the most about Hurd is he appears to be a bleeder, maybe a glass jaw. He has already had two shoulder surgeries. While Henry broke his leg, that was a clean break which healed completely. I know the doctors say Hurd's shoulder will heal as well, but the two surgeries are cause for concern. I think Hurd may be a bit faster than Henry, but Henry is easily the more physical back. He could play in the NFL right now. Hurd is also more of a strider, while Henry takes shorter steps and is more punishing. Hurd also runs more upright than Henry, which is a cause of concern. I'm just gonna see how this plays out. I'm not anti-Jalen Hurd. I am, however, a little skeptical about his durability and the lack of competition he played in high school. While he played 5A ball, 5A football in Tennessee is not nearly as competitive as other states.

A. Hurd is at least year younger than Henry, its not hard to see him carrying 235/240 next year when they are of comparable age.

B. There is 0/zero/nada/zip/ zilch evidence to support the premise "Henry is easily the more physical back."

C. "I'm just gonna see how this plays out." No you're not you've already decided about Hurd at least in comparison to Henry.

There have been multiple Running Backs over the years who were over 6'0 & 6'1 who succeeded in the NFL. I think the mold really got set for smaller running backs with guys like Walter Payton, Barry Sanders & Emmitt Smith. There have been a few taller running backs over the years who have shown that you don’t have to be 5’10 to be a good half-back.

Erick Dickerson
Height: 6-3 Weight: 220
Experience: 11 Seasons
6× Pro Bowl selection
5× First-team All-Pro selection
NFL 1980s All-Decade Team
1983 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year
1986 NFL Offensive Player of the Year
3x UPI NFC Offensive Player of the Year
NFL Record 2,105 Rushing Yards in a Single Season

Larry Csonka
HEIGHT: 6-3 WEIGHT: 237 LBS
8,081 Career Rushing Yards.

5× Pro Bowl selection
2× Super Bowl champion
Super Bowl VIII MVP
1979 NFL Comeback Player of the Year
Miami Dolphins #39 retired
1987 HOF

Jim Brown
Height: 6-2 Weight: 232 lbs.
9× Pro Bowl selection (1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965)

3× Pro Bowl MVP (1961, 1962, 1965)
Lacrosse Hall of Fame
HOF - 1971

Bo Jackson
6'1 220 pounds
(Bo wasn't quiet as tall as some of the others but imagine what Bo could have accomplished had he not gotten injured)

Brandon Jacobs is 6'4 260 pounds the fullback size with half back quickness.

Eddie George
Height: 6-3 Weight: 235 lbs.
4× Pro Bowl (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000)

If history has taught us anything is that size doesnt matter. (Pause for laughter to subside) There are great running backs in all sizes. Hurd may be great and he may be terrible. Lets allow time to sort this one out.

So your theory is.....since Danica Patrick is a NASCAR driver all women are good drivers?

For the record, I hope Hurd is the best RB to ever play the game. But just because there are a few examples of tall rb's that have been successful, it doesn't change the fact that the odds are against him.

So please explain why the odds are against him.

So please explain why the odds are against him.

Mainly because, despite his size, he isn't a power runner. Also hasn't faced much tough competition.

I hope it doesn't play out that way and we get 4yrs of beast mode.

But that is what I understand the criticism to be.

On the flip side he has great speed for his size. Even if he doesn't make it as a RB there's a decent chance he becomes a very good TE.

He's too frail and lanky to play TE.

Vol Roster @ TE:
Alex Ellis TE 6-4 240
Woody Quinn TE 6-6 253
Brendan Downs TE 6-5 248
A.J. Branisel TE 6-4 235
Greg Tisho TE 6-2 232

Jalen Hurd 6-3 230

The biggest 2 (Downs & Quinn) are seniors.

Great research...extend it to the Jaken Hurd thread...especially after a chap named rcvol pipes in.
