Stop the soft zone BS.

No. If that were true then teams would stop doing it. They haven't. It just stands out when it fails. Like come on man. You think you figured something out that the pros haven't?
Steve Spurrier made his bones against a “soft or prevent” defense. He as many other coaches couldn’t wait until the. Opposing coordinator would set on his thumb , Then wore you out with 7-10 yard passes. Just MHO

Leary has been pedestrian at best. We game-planed to stop the run and we did. It’s easier to stop the run in zone coverage. If Kentucky was able to run the ball they would have won the ball game. They didn’t.

We won because it’s Kentucky. We tried the same garbage against UF and how’d that work out. It’s time to just man up and trust your defense to stop the run AND the pass. Quit making it this or that. It’s year 3. Time to step up.

Our prevent ensures a close game. Coaches like our chances to win close ones. It's a bet.

Florida got monkey stomped by Kentucky. Playing Kentucky at home after they have had a week off and us coming off the Bama game I’ll take the win any way we can get it.
As far as stopping the pass I think we have done a pretty good job of it all year.

What’s your explanation for one of the best pass rushes in the nation through 6.5 games suddenly looking so pedestrian?

Umm, well I would start with all of the d line talk started after we were playing great against the likes of Virginia, Austin Peay, UTSA, South Carolina. Lol only exception was Florida, and well, we saw how that went.

The staff understands our secondary problems, especially without Hadden (can’t believe I’m saying that). Banks was going to stop the run and make UK beat us throwing the ball. Until yesterday, that was a solid game plan. Leary had a career night on us.

Wanting Banks fired is absolutely not a solution. I think an elite DB coach who can recruit and coach is where you start. Banks has done a good job given what he started with. Personally, I love his aggressive nature, and I think it fits well with Heupel’s offensive style. We also have a very good bend don’t break defense. It’s not ideal, but we have done a good job this year stuffing the run game. We have made big strides on defense over the last three years (Banks I believe was learning the job on the fly), and we are going to have to live with the bend don’t break zone defenses until we get better secondary players (and a better DB coach), IMO.
It’s pretty funny how pretty much everyone had so much hope for Hadden after the 2021 bowl game and then he does what he does for the next year and a quarter. Then just when you think he’s a lost cause he just starts balling out to be one of the best corners statistically in the country lol. He’s kind of reminiscent of our football program over the past 15 years haha.

Tim Banks you’re driving me nuts. Stop playing soft zone. The defense is horrendous at it. If the other team makes big plays on us by playing aggressive and man to man, so be it. Tip your hat, but stop making crap easy for the other team. It ain’t gonna fly against Missouri and Georgia. and CJH, you’re gonna have to figure out how to get the refs to call offensive holding. Good luck. When our Dline is allowed to be held all night, our secondary is not good enough to cover that long. Earn your paycheck Tim and stop the weak ass defense please. That is all. Let’s go 10-2. GBO
It's frustrating to watch our guys not properly pass routes off, particularly on shallow crosses, and particularly from young LB's(but Beasley was responsible for some also). Why we have our DE(Harrison) dropping into zone coverage is crazy. If we're gonna cover, let db's guys cover. We need some answers for the middle of the field-Georgia likes to hit those routes and we can't seem to stop them.
Any word on Pili for UGA?

I have no problem with playing zone. The problem I have is not adjusting when it’s not working. We seem to be very stubborn at adjusting when our initial plan isn’t working.

Banks wanted to make Leary beat us and I have no issues with that but when a guy is carving up the defense it’s time to adjust. I’m wondering if the loss of Hadden makes us scared to play man?
It did work though. We made them one dimensional in a way they haven't been able to be all year. Yes Leary had a good day but Ray Davis was 16 carries for 42 yards. Kentucky was under 100 yards rushing. Yes we bent a lot but in the end we didn't break and the bet paid off.

Against Missouri and Georgia I’m bring pressure got to or we get beat, and they pick our backfield off we will get destroyed, because They never look for the damn ball

Agree. A DC has to make decisions on what part of an offensive attack he wants to focus on. KY had been running the ball down people's throats and Leary had been struggling all season, so the play was to sell out and stop the run - mission accomplished.

Combine that with not the greatest secondary personnel made weaker by the loss of Hadden, and it made a bend-not-break zone a logical choice. Leary had an all-world night and barely missed a throw - sometimes you have to give credit where it's due. But how many big plays did KY have in the pass game? UT kept everything in front of them and tackled well for the most part, the problem was the pass rush and blitz schemes not getting home.

I'm not a fan of soft zones, but if the pass rush had been more effective it's likely Leary wouldn't have been as good. Whether it be great protection, holding not being called, or a combination, it worked for them. Banks had the right plan, but occasionally the other team does a good job, and until we get better secondary talent it's not a terrible idea to mitigate that by just limiting big pass plays.

Exactly! Ray Davis was the threat, so the game plan was to shut him down. We did and it worked. Leary took advantage of our focus on Davis and he had a good game, but it still wasn't enough to win. The coaches play the odds based on what the tendencies of the opponents are and how they can utilize their current personnel to beat them. It's a game and there are too many variables and situations that can happen to say one way is gonna work better over another. We had a game plan on defense.......did it work? Doesn't matter how it looked......it worked.

Kentucky’s OL protected Leary for the most part. They only gave up one sack. Our secondary looks much better when the front seven gets pressure. When they don’t, even average at best QBs will find the open receivers.

Our better db's are sitting on the bench as banks and willie are dead set on playing these older and slow covering db's that we have. How bout letting some of these younger/faster guys get some action. Just a little bit.

If you have watched UK games their passing was horrendous but Leery just hit a zone, it happens. Sometimes even Gary said great coverage just a perfect throw. We basically made him beat us and he had a great game but we still won because both teams played turnover free.

If our pass rush does not get to the QB against Missouri or GA they will hang 40 on us easy.

I agree but think the entire plan was to stop their rushing game. We accomplished that but who knew KY QB would look like Danny Woerfel. I didn’t like giving them 10 yard cushion even with all the intent on stopping their rb. But we got the W.

The coverage was loose. Too much cushion. The gameplan was to make a QB that had looked like dogshat all year beat you. He almost did. Made him look like he needed hesiman consideration... It's what we do. They also had two weeks to prepare for that game. They played well and the UT defense didn't.. Play that way against Missouri or UGA and you can go do some yard work by halftime. They're not going to call holding on opposing Olines unless they totally rip the guy's shirt off and they may still not call it. Only way is to bring a extra guy which good teams go right to where he came from. Loose Zone coverage makes you want to drink, but it had a purpose. I just think the corners are not very good and play too far off the receiver. Willy Martinez strikes again...

Our secondary makes bottom dweller quarterbacks and receivers look like heisman candidates and I hate it. We consistantly give up 3rd and 15+ to teams that shouldn't be able to even be on the field with us.

This. The soft zone was to be able to contain Davis. Leary took advantage of it but it still wasn't enough.
The guys in the box was able to contain Davis. The soft zone (corners and safeties) got TORE UP all night. DBs need to be in a position to play tighter coverage instead of being in a position to play against the deep ball every down. It's ridiculous and hasn't done nothing but hurt this team for 3 years

How has it hurt this tram for 3 years? That's pretty dramatic.

I've paid a lot of attention to our DBs the last few weeks and as much as I complain about Hadden, he's really the only guy among those who are regularly playing who can play man. The other DBs, IMO, aren't good enough to do it. So while we may want to get up and play man, we don't have the talent among our starters. We're stuck hoping the opposing qb isn't good enough to routinely find and hit the open receivers and our rush can hurry him. Until these young guys mature, it is what it is. We aren't UGA in the secondary.....not even close.
