Student Section

That's no excuse. Don't tell me 25,000 students went home for a 4 day ( Thursday-Sunday) Fall Break. The students are becoming less and less interested in attending games, a trend that has been occurring over the last several years. This is not only at UT but at most universities. We were playing the #11 team in the country and might have had 4,000 students at best. When I was in school we would have had to camp out to get tickets for a game like this, Fall break or no Fall break.

No, we all didn't. That's why the student section was still rocking.

We can watch the game these days on TVs with a screen bigger than the palm of my hand unlike back in your days and high enough definition to see blades of grass on the field instead of struggling to just see the players. I also think education has taken a much bigger priority in big programs than in earlier times, so many students aren't all about their football experience in college.

I'm sorry that some of the students can't get as excited as you guys did back in the day, but we haven't had the luxury of expecting big upsets or SEC wins in our student career here.... actually, I'm not sorry, because I took a pass on going home to my family in Memphis to attend this game. I'm not sorry, because myself (student since 2009) and most of my fellow students have endured the worst Tennessee teams and most disappointing ways to lose in history for the past few years, and thousands of us still showed up at Georgia and South Carolina over fall break after an emotional loss (most of the students around me after Georgia were in tears) and gave everything we had to be loud and support our team and our school.

Get off your 'back in my day' high horse and understand that things are different now, and yet, some of us still come to games week in and week out.

Do students leave during fall break?

This is a new phenomena that I've seen. I'm seeing a lot of tweets and instagram photos of people who went to the beach for a mini-vacation. You also have a bunch of people who go home cause it's the only opportunity they'll have to get a handful of days at home.

There were 4000 students in J.....The student section was absolutely rocking yesterday, louder than I've heard it in Neyland. Oh and we all stayed after the game was over to celebrate, which is why I got a huge hug from AJ Johnson and shook hands with Big DMC and Sutton.....so Ioneven wanna hear it

I stood most of the game yesterday as did most of the fans around me. Obviously you weren't at the game.

Got lucky. There was actually a rule posted once that stated something to the effect of: if anyone is seen standing or being too loud that interferes with you enjoying the game, please report them so it can be taken care of. And trust me if you get in the right spot you'll get someone behind you yelling that they didn't spend their money to watch someone stand in front of them. It sounds ridiculous but it's true.

Stop lying to affirm your preconceived point. It's embarrassing... I have my gripes about the students, but I've been going to UT game for the last 20 years since I was a kid and campus has ALWAYS been a ghost town during fall break.

Someone had it backwards. Out of the 12,000 student tix, UT sold 3800 to USCe students to fill up. So, if 8200 showed up on fall break and STILL yelled louder than almost every other section (if not louder than every section), I don't count that as a failure.

The student section was the loudest area of the stadium yesterday. Maybe some of the old season ticket holders need to get off their hands and help make some damn noise.

There was a great turnout considering it was fall break.

ND pulls the majority of their students from all over the country. For most, going home is more than a few hour drive. unlike state schools.

UT should continue to charge for the lower bowl student seats and give the upper deck ones free. That way the most committed and energized kids are closer to the field where they'll have a greater impact.

I don't remember many games from 1996-2001 where you could hardly even find a ticket.

I have been going to most of the big games since 2008 and I have been to all the home games since becoming a UT student in 2012. Georgia and South Carolina have been the loudest games I have been too, and a ton of that goes on the student section. None of the students here had the privilege to see Peyton play or a national championship team like you seem to have had. For the first time in around 3 years (but in reality really 6) the students now know that winning is going to come and come soon. I guarantee the Auburn and Vandy game will be packed and probably even louder, especially if we can get Missouri.

I really take offense to the criticisms you have made, because without the students who came yesterday, that game wouldn't have been half as loud.

As someone mentioned earlier, the lower bowl area behind the UT bench was dead quiet compared to the student section.

Tell UT to stop charging for student tix and schedule fall break around away games/bye weeks. I don't recall there ever being a home game during fall break when I was at UT in the mid 2000s. If there was, I would've missed too cause it was one of the few times I could get home during the semester.

The students who are marginal football fans aren't going to pay and stick around.
