Supergirl Couldve Stayed At CBS If Not Picked Up By The CW
One of the headlines of this upfront was the move of Supergirl from CBS to the CW, which is co-owned by CBS and Warner Bros., the studio that produces the superhero drama.
Before CBS press breakfast, I asked CBS Corp. boss Leslie Moonves about the decision to move the show. Its great to own two networks, he said. Supergirl fits better on the CW.
Moonves praised CBS partnership with Warner Bros. and his relationship with CEO Kevin Tsujihara. He said that talks about Supergirl went on for a month before the agreement for the shows relocation to the CW was made.
If they didnt go there, we wouldve probably taken it back, Moonves said.
CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller shared similar sentiment during CBS morning press briefing. Its a win-win since we co-own the CW, he said. We worked out great deal. And who would say we wouldnt have picked it up had it not gone to the CW.
Despite the fact that its numbers tapered off significantly after a strong start, Supergirl, aided by a solid DVR play, averaged a 2.4 rating among adults 18-49 in a competitive time slot, ranking as the No. 1 new CBS drama and No. 4 new network series overall (behind only Blindspot, Life In Pieces and Quantico) in the demo this season. It is CBS youngest-skewing new drama and averaged nearly 10 million viewers.
CW president Mark Pedowitz said he has a rough idea where Supergirl will go creatively in Season 2. He and executive producer Greg Berlanti will sit down next week to discuss that further. Tonally, no significant changes are expected in the series move from CBS to the CW.
They had a pretty successful series, Pedowitz said. The fact that its moving where it shouldve been in the first place is not going to have a big effect.
Ratings-wise, Pedowitz said the expectation is that Supergirl will draw a little less viewership than it did at CBS, where it averaged close to 10 million viewers in Live+7. I believe it will be a strong performer for the CW, I believe it will be one of our top three performers, and I am confident that it will bring some of its audience on CBS.
One of the first orders of business: Supergirl will be employed in the next annual CW crossover in December. Pedowitz declined to elaborate whether it will be a four-night event with Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow and DCs Legends Of Tomorrow all conveniently airing on four consecutive nights but noted it will be the networks biggest ever crossover. He will reveal details at the networks upfront presentation later this morning.
Pedowiz said the CWs discussions for Supergirl started a week and a half ago. In addition to the move to the CW, the series also is relocating production to Vancouver. Pedowitz was asked whether co-star Calista Flockhart will remain on the show as a regular with the location change. We are very happy to have her, he said. There are ongoing discussions. We are thrilled that she wants to continue on the show, and we are thrilled to have her in whatever capacity.
I had heard that there was an idea for Flockhart to fly to Vancouver periodically, filming scenes for multiple episodes at a time.
Superman To Appear On Supergirl In Season 2 On the CW
Supergirl is getting a super boost for its launch on the CW. After a ton of references and a few fleeting glimpses of Superman in Season 1, the Man of Steel will be appearing in the flesh in the opening episodes of the superhero series upcoming second season as it moves from CBS to the CW.
Casting is underway for an actor to play the iconic DC Comics character in the first two episodes on Supergirls second season, visiting his cousin Kara (Melissa Benoist) in National City. It is unclear if Superman will appear in further episodes, but given his close ties with Kara, that appears likely.
Greg, Ali and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl, said executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, who co-created the series with fellow exec producers Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler. We cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape.
Kreisbergs comment indicates that a new actor will take on the role, previously played by Tom Welling on TV in Smallville and currently by Henry Cavill on the big screen.
Supergirls producers had said that they intentionally did not feature Superman on the first season of Supergirl to not distract from the focus of the series, Kara. Supergirl already teamed up with another famous DC superhero, The Flash, in an episode last season.
The second season of Supergirl will air in the series previous CBS time slot if Monday 8 PM.
I think you should watch it if your into the CW/DC shows because if it wasn't for the success of Smallville we probably wouldn't have Arrow, Flash, Supergirl or Gotham.I never watched Smallville.

A lot of people forget that Smallville ran for 10 Seasons from (2001-2011). So its going to be a fun ride if the current DC shows can make it that long.
It seems that a lot of people either hate it or love it. Some like the first couple of seasons and then hate the rest or like me love from about season 5 on and are only tolerant of the first several seasons.
Like I said I liked it more beginning around season 4 or 5 when they introduced Lois Lane (Erica Durance) I really liked her take on the character and then in Season 6 I think it is that they introduce Oliver Queen and the Martian Manhunter to the show and then a season or so later Clark begins working with Lois at the Daily Planet.
I'll just be honest here. I watched Smallville for a little while and I can safely say it was mostly to see Kristin Kreuk. At some point I gave it up because it felt slow to me at the time and never seemed to go anywhere. Clark never became Superman and apparently didn't even in the finale of the show.

Supergirl Finds Its Superman: Tyler Hoechlin Cast In CW Series
As Supergirl prepares to fly faster than a speeding bullet from CBS to the CW, the network has announced that Everybody Wants Some! star Tyler Hoechlin has been cast as Superman/Clark Kent, the first live-action television incarnation of the Man of Steel since Smallville starring Tom Welling went off the air in 2011. As previously announced, Superman will make his debut on the DC Television universe, which also includes The Flash, Arrow, and Legends Of Tomorrow, at the start of Supergirls second season when he visits Kara in National City.
Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman, said Andrew Kreisberg, executive producer of Supergirl. We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.
Hoechlin most recently was seen starring in Richard Linklaters Everybody Wants Some!, and will soon appear in the British action-thriller Stratton as well as the sports dramedy Undrafted. His credits include Road To Perdition, Hall Pass, Solstice and Teen Wolf. Hes repped by UTA, Management 360, and attorney Todd Rubinstein.
The decision to include Superman as a major part of Supergirls roster of characters (he is briefly shown in flashback on the Supergirl pilot) is something of a change in policy for DC Comics television properties. Kreisberg, who co-created The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and Legends Of Tomorrow, has been candid in past interviews about the fact that Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman were off limits to the CWs DC-related TV shows. That seems to have changed as part of the recent reorganization at Warner Bros, which saw management of the studios ongoing DC Universe films reshuffled in response to the muted critical and audience reaction to Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.
Hoechlin will be the sixth actor to portray the last son of Krypton on a live-action television series following George Reeves, John Haymes Newton, Gerard Christopher, Dean Cain, and Tom Welling.
