SUPERGIRL Will Be The Focus Of The Four-Show CW Superhero Crossover
When Supergirl was announced to be moving to the CW for its second season, it was followed up by the news that all four shows would be a part of a mega-crossover event during the upcoming fall season. While details are still scarce on how Kara will arrive on the new earth from her current one, executive producer Marc Guggenheim (speaking at Comic-Con) revealed that her presence, along with a new threat, is what will instigate the events of the episodes. "Its an external threat from outside the shows that will involve Supergirl coming over to The Flash, then Arrow then Legends of Tomorrow."
Guggenheim also teased plenty of action for the newly introduced Justice Society Of America in season 2 of Legends, including a fight between the two teams in the first episode of the season. "Its all going to kick off with an epic battle between the Justice Society and the Legends," Guggenheim said. "Its required that every time theres more than one superhero in any place at any given time, they have to fight. Were honoring that rule and that tradition straight out of the gate."
Executive producer Phil Klemmer provided a few more details about the new season as well, teasing the introduction of important historical figures that will be a part of the story. "We will be doing these iconic historical moments with recognizable historical figures, he said. To me, we had little things like H.G. Wells and we had a little shoutout to Bill Gates at a certain point. Season two, youre going to see the icons of the 20th century. Youre going to have those versions of the Forrest Gump kind of moments with our guys trying to fix history but at the same time getting to play a part in these recognizable eras."
It was announced today that Kevin Smith would not only be returning to direct an episode of The Flash this September, but that hell also be directing an episode of new CW acquisition Supergirl. Smith announced his joy at the opportunity to direct Melissa Benoist and co. via a Facebook post, where he also ended up revealing the title of the episode hell be directing, "Supergirl Lives".
You may remember Smith wrote a script for a Superman movie titled Superman Lives, which in the end never got made. Smith clarified that the title has nothing to do with the plot of the episode itself and is merely a homage to his failed Superman project.
The Flash and Supergirl will channel their cast members real life superpowers their singing talents for two musical crossover episodes in the back half of the season, around episode 13 or 14, the executive producers revealed at The CWs Television Critics Association summer press tour presentation on Thursday. The executive producers of all four CW superhero shows The Flash, Supergirl, Arrow and DCs Legends of Tomorrow were on hand to discuss whats ahead for the new seasons.
That crossover is not to be confused with the epic four-show crossover that will take place between The Flash, Supergirl, Arrow and Legends in November, executive producer Greg Berlanti noted. With stars Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist both alums of Glee, and a number of other cast members having done stints on Broadway, the musical episodes seemed like a no brainer for the producers, and will use mostly pre-exisiting songs, although Berlanti said the writers hope to pen at least one original song for each episode.
When theyre not acting or flying or punching or exploding things, theyre singing, Ali Adler said of Benoist and Gustin, having worked with both stars on Glee.
Some of you may know my personal love for musicals, and we have a number of people who can sing across all the shows, Berlanti noted, with the producers citing John Barrowman, Victor Garber, Jesse L. Martin and Jeremy Jordan as being especially excited about the crossover.
Weve got such talented actors, 15 years from now when the last of these shows is going off the air, that would be a big regret [if we didnt do it] its too much fun not to, Sarah Schechter noted
