Swine Flu Outbreak

We've just had the first death, in this Swine Flu outbreak.

Yep...a 2-year old Mexican baby whose family was visiting the US.

The death of a baby is no laughing matter, obviously....but I find the word "visiting" a bit comedic.

What do you think the odds are that the Mexican family just happened to be "visiting" the US illegally? Doesn't speak well for border control when the only death on US soil is a person who shouldn't have been here in the first place.

I believe I read that the toddler was brought to the US for medical treatment for this.

The Gaffe Machine in full steam ahead mode...

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said on Thursday he would tell his family to stay out of airplanes or subways to avoid contracting swine flu, prompting his office to issue a clarification.

Asked on NBC's "Today" show what he would tell members of his family if they asked him whether they should get on a commercial airliner to Mexico in the next week, Biden said:

"I would tell members of my family -- and I have -- I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places now."

He said the problem is that "when one person sneezes it goes all the way through the aircraft."

"I would not be, at this point, if they had another way of transportation, suggesting they ride the subway. So from my perspective, what it relates to is mitigation," he said.

"If you're out in the middle of a field and someone sneezes, that's one thing. If you're in a closed aircraft or a closed container, a closed car, a closed classroom, it's a different thing," he added.

Biden's spokesperson, Elizabeth Alexander, sought to clarify Biden's remarks in a statement issued shortly after his television interview.

"The advice he is giving family members is the same advice the administration is giving to all Americans: that they should avoid unnecessary air travel to and from Mexico," she said.

"If they are sick, they should avoid airplanes and other confined public spaces, such as subways. This is the advice the vice president has given family members who are traveling by commercial airline this week," Alexander said. (Reporting by Steve Holland, editing by Vicki Allen)

I've not heard that.

On an unrelated note, I'm listening to Van Halen's "Right Now." And, dammit, it never fails...every time I hear this song, I get a hankering for Crystal Pepsi.

Just got an email from our Chief of Staff and him telling us that we are strongly encouraged to take liberal leave and not to come to work until the 4th. I think maybe some might be getting a little overboard with this and possibly panicking over just two cases in this area that havent even been confirmed with test yet.

ppl over react, its like when they call for an inch of snow in the south. all hell breaks loose. get ur milk and bread

That's what bothers me. Only around 6% of people infected die, or about 6 in 100. Even less in the U.S.

If that 6% number were to stick, don't think you would want to refer to it as an "only". That would be a huge percentage for an infection that could be transmitted so easily.

Right, it could potentially kill millions, the 1918 flu only 3% died and millions died from it. However, most people who will get it probably won't be hospitalized.

My work just sent out a mass email telling us to wash our hands....I dunno why, but I suddenly feel like I am in grammar school again.

I know I am probably over reacting here but my daughter has been running a fever since last night and has not eaten anything since lunch yesterday. I told my wife she needed to go to the doctor. You never know, better safe than sorry!

I play in a local soccer league and all games are canceled this weekend with the exception of the adult league games. It is up to us whether or not we still want to play. I guess being adults we are allowed to do what we want.

Our team captain just got an email saying if the adults decide to play, we are not allowed to bring our kids and anyone under the age of 18 will not be admitted into the park, enforced by the city police.

Ridiculous? You make the call.
