Tajh Boyd interview - thoughts on Tennessee

Really interesting Tajh Boyd interview from Scout on his thoughts on the process of coaching changes and on Tennessee. Says he still roots for Tennessee on the side and that he still occasionally attends UT basketball games. Also says that Mike Hamilton lied to his face, telling him two weeks before Fulmer was canned that he "would still be here". Had and still does have great respect for Coach Fulmer, saying that his authenticity and manner in which he conducted himself were the reasons he wanted to go to UT.

Interview is in the video at the bottom of the page. It's free.

1-on-1 with Tajh Boyd

I don't often rehash the Lane Kiffin thing, but knowing that he ran off not one but two of the best CFB QBs in the country makes my blood boil all over again.

But anyway, great interview. Boyd seems like a really well-grounded kid.
I assume you are talking about Bryce Petty as the 2nd one. He would have never been given the opportunity to prove himself here, the way Baylor did. Would have been recruited over.

I agree with you though. We didn't have any good options at QB, depth-wise, so it was insane to run off 2 QB's when you really NEEDED the depth and competition.

The worst decision Kiffin made in evaluating QB's was to turn away a phenom like Cam Newton, and choose instead, Matt Simms. That's 3 major, program killing guffs Kiffin made...well before USC came calling.

Thank you. I don't get those kind of arguments. It's like people on here that say Tee Martin was a better Qb than Manning because he beat Florida. I think Tee threw for around 63 yards in that win.

I doubt anyone meant Worley literally squared off with Clowney.

I don't know about all that. You may have noticed that Baylor wins a lot of football games. Certainly a hell of a lot more than we have lately. Briles' basketball offense notwithstanding, I think Petty is a hell of a ballplayer and unlike Chuckie Keeton, an actual legitimate Heisman contender. And he isn't half the head case Bray was. In fact, if Petty signs with UT, Dools is probably still the coach.

Really, who was he going to be "recruited over" by? Justin Worley? Nate Peterman?

Mike Hamilton once had a bbq for donors and served baked beans and potato salad. Problem is there was no forks or spoons. When I asked him why there wasn't any forks or spoons he responded.........and I quote "we didn't budget for any"

I responded and I quote....."you didn't budget for any?"....then I just walked away.....

At that point I wanted to slap the **** outa him. From that moment forward.

Boyd never would have started over Bray, so we would've seen him for 1 year, and it wouldn't have been the same.

He threw for a gazillion yards at Clemson. Good for him.

Always rooted for him to do well, knowing if hamilton wasn't the troll that he was he would have been a vol.

His recruiting class would have righted the ship.. IMO of course no way to prove it, I just feel like by time Boyd was a sophomore... Fulmer would have had us back in the SEC CG.

Worley vs Georgia 0-1
Boyd vs Georgia 1-0

Boyd is a hell of a lot better player than Worley.

Just saying.

Where do people come up with the "Boyd v Clowney", " Peyton v Brady" etc etc bull crap?

The whole idea is so delusional. It's a team game with 22 players on the field for every play. A total of 50-60 different players play in each game. And people have the audacity to judge players and their careers based on one or two players of the 50 that play.

It's like saying "Peyton sucks because he never beat Florida". He NEVER played Florida. His team played Florida. He and his teammates were beaten by Florida.

I know dude is probably just stirring the pot for fun. But, a lot of people talk stupid like this and don't know any better. This ain't MMA, Boxing, or Tennis here ... it's a team sport.

I'm really hoping this is a true story. If so, Volnation should make this LEGENDARY. That is a Dooley story. You can hear him at the presser now:

"You know how you can have the family bbq? Wife makes baked beans and potato salad. But if you don't have the forks and spoons, you can't eat the baked beans and potato salad....

Right now, we've got a lot of beans and potato salad at Tennessee but we need the forks and spoons. Forks and spoons win ballgames."

That is THE classic Hamilton story. I hope it's true.

It is most certainly true. I used to like Hamilton and thought he was a great fundraiser for the program. When this happened I knew we had a complete moron running the show. It's inexcusable stupidity.

Seriously.......What kind of person in any position, especially a high ranking leadership position, orders beans and potato salad and doesn't make available any utensils?

Not only does this raise serious questions about one's ability to lead. It also raises questions about one's ability to function (common sense) or worse (do they have a motive).

While this is minor in regards to the frivolous and irresponsible contracts he awarded coaches, it certainly explains where his brain is (or lack there of...)

The contracts he gave to coaches heavily favored the interest of the coach and not the interest of Tennessee as an institution. Sound like others in leadership roles currently? Heavily favoring the interest of others and not of the United States?

Not to try to get all political. But it's a fair analogy.

Kiffin said he let those guys go because he didn't want them to just ride the bench their whole 3-4yrs and be recruited over. Dooley was still coaching LA Tech at that point.

I'm not trying to say Petty isn't a good QB now, but he was a 3* then and nothing really stood out about him. Bucky Brooks, a former NFL Scout who covers NFL draft prospects for the NFL Network, thrashed Petty as an NFL draft prospect. Saying he only has an average arm and such.

I think they are way off base sometimes, and I hope Petty can really shut up his critics this year. The Draftnicks had it all wrong with Colin Kaepernick in the 2011 draft as well. I remember banging the table loudly for Kaepernick, on the Titan fan forums, leading up to the draft. The Titans chose Locker, at No.8 in the 1st Rd, instead.

Kaepernick had all the measurables a coach could want. He had all the CREDENTIALS one could want....4 yr starter at Nevada...broke/holds NCAA record for most passing and running yards in a career. He was an Academic All-American and came up clutch on the biggest stage (he put his Nevada team on his back and led them to an upset of then undefeated, and Top 10 ranked, Boise St.)

He was overlooked because he didn't play in a power conference and came out of a Pistol offense. Nevertheless, Kaepernick had the strongest arm in that draft...beat Ryan Mallett, throwing the football in the high 50 mph range, at the NFL combine...was faster than Cam Newton, and had among the highest completion percentages in college.

So, yeah....sometimes the "experts" leave their brains at the door.
