The '99 game still bothers me...Tenn had a more talented team by a mile but couldn't adjust to block one DE and allowed that to disrupt their offense.
UT fans and football team haven't been that cocky pre-game in Gainesville since 1999.
As if we weren't still pissed off about losing in OT the year before, Cedric Wilson gave us some excellent bulletin board material, claiming playing in The Swamp was no different than playing in Commonwealth Stadium...oh it was on at that point.
Doug Johnson made that game much closer than it should have been. UF was up 23-7, UF was driving and Doug decided to play catch with Deon Grant. UT stormed back and made it a nail biter.
Historically UF has had little trouble getting motivated to play you guys, and competing until the very end.
I don't know that UF expects UT to fold at the first sign of trouble.
I think it's more a case of UT being surprised that UF actually came to compete for 60 minutes, in spite of what appears to be adverse conditions.
See last year after Driskel got hurt...2012 after hearing how great UT was after the NC State game...Brantley's first road game as a starter in 2010...2006 when we were down 10 in the second half...2005 running a new gimmick offense with an "unproven" coach from Utah...our final TD drive in 2000 (no, it wasn't a catch)...going all the way back to 1996 with the entire state of Tennessee hungry for revenge.
Historically UF has had little trouble getting motivated to play you guys, and competing until the very end.
I always try to stay up to a certain extent on Florida's SEC opponents. So it really shocks me when fans of the opposition know almost NOTHING about Florida.
First of all, UF returns 67 starts on the offensive line. All 5 guys that are expected to start have started games and played a ton. The youngest guy on the line is a Junior. It is a big, experienced line, and key word here - they are healthy (it's night and day compared to last year). The depth on the line is better than last year, although still not spectacular, but overall, a MUCH MUCH better situation than 2013.
The WR corp is going to look very different in 2014 vs. 2013. The Class of 2013 was one of the better WR hauls that UF has had in years. Most were just not ready to contribute though, last year, especially with all of the adversity at other positions on the team. Given an extra year of development, it looks like Ahmad Fulwood, Demarcus Robinson, and Chris Thompson are going to add a lot of play making ability to solid Quinton Dunbar, and a healthy Andre Debose. Coupled with the transfer of Jake McGee from Virginia, who right away may be the 2nd best receiving TE in the conference at 6'6, 255, and UF's pasgsing offense is light years ahead of where it was in 2013. The only question still at WR is in the slot, where it is unclear who will play, but they have options. Something they have not had in years.
They have a lot of depth and talent at RB, and all reports from fall camp indicate that Driskel's skill set fit very well into the new offense. Everyone is excited about it, even the coaches.
I shouldn't have to mention the defense, but UF has 2 big, tough seniors starting at DT, and 2 of the best junior ends in the conference in Bullard and Fowler. They have good depth behind them this year (something that never materialized in 2013 and was very much needed after all the injuries) and the LB corp is solid. The secondary has some youth at the #2 positions, but the starters are all solid, and VH3 may be the best corner in the nation.
Punting is strong, and the coverage and return units are all going to be very good as normal, I won't go into all the details as this post is already forever long. The kicking game is the biggest question on the team right now.
The roster is pretty loaded in 2014. If UF sucks, barring ridiculous injuries, it's all on the coaches this year.
That depends on how well we show against Oklahoma. Florida is usually undefeated when they play Tenn. Not only will that not be the case this year but they will have a blowout loss on film as well. Some of you are conceding too much...their offense will still be terrible.
Just like UT with Worley and Peteman at QB. What have any of your weapons done on the SEC? North had a solid yr but no better than Dunbar...Lane no better than Brown, Jones or Taylor.
The rest is preseason hype at this point.
Vols are starting 3 or 4 new OL...two of which are a Fr and a walk on but you what to call UF terrible. Lol

I don't think anyone is saying UT is in better shape coming into the season. The point is that no normal people are predicting great things from UT this year. Gator fans, however, are near unanimous on the notion of 8+ wins with a pretty sizeable contingent predicting 10 wins.
LG predicts 6 wins, and I think we win no more than 8.
Thus the term near unanimous
But I wasn't sniping at you guys. I like your input and always have. I just don't think any rational fan thinks UT will be better than UF. I think you could argue the gap is definitely smaller than it has been in several years though.
There's no disputing the gap is shrinking.
The success, or lack thereof, of UF's 2014 offense will dictate the course of our program for the next 3-5 years.
