Talked To A Guy At Missouri State

Moving with a purpose will be culture shock.

I can see it now:

Tatum: "Wait, Coach Martin, are you saying that when I make a cut to the basket, I'm suppose to run, not jog?"

Kenny Hall: "You mean, when I set a pick, I actually am suppose to make contact with the other player?"

Hopson: "So, instead of waiting till ten seconds and get the ball from the point guard 25 feet out, I like, go around ball screens? What the hell is a ball screen?"

Somtimes you are so full of it. It won't be that big of a change for them. These players are probably much more receptive to change than most of the posters in this forum.

doesn't diminish the point that lazily going through the motions and avoiding screens like the plague has been a problem and it will take some focus to correct.

Motion off. Vs standing around off. The Motion off. Will confuse the hell out of these players. They will be running into each other. That will be a show in itself.

I like these two quotes the best!:)

I've been following Mo State for quite awhile(2 of my kids graduated from there) I was secretly hoping TN would pick him up but I thought Mizzou would grab him for sure. In my opinion Martin will be great for TN. He gets a lot out of his kids (see Weems, MVC conference player of the year) and he will be able to recruit with anyone in the conference. If he could get Otto Porter to come with him, it would be icing on the cake.

We could quickly create a list of terms the players are likely to learn from Coach Martin:

Screen/Pick
Cut
Backdoor
Box out
Jump stop
Free Throw
...

at least 4 will be new terms to returning players

NIT...could go both ways.

I hope he works out, I really do. I don't know if our program can sustain a dropout.

Nice to have class and dignity back on the Hill.

Looks that way. So it seems we have two of the classes coaches in sports with Cuonzo and Dooley.....let's hope that equates to some wins

From what I've read, Martin runs a disciplined motion offense that is basically the same as what Painter does at Purdue. It will be quite a shock to our players to go from what they're accustomed to doing to that.

You mean we may run an offense instead of running the flex and never using it then going one on one with no three point shooters to kick to? I'm excited!

If Hopson returns and I think he does. Then maybe somebody will teach him some ball handling skills because he lacks that more than anything.

True or False: Buzz Peterson was a nice guy.

A nice guy who couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag. Took over a Tulsa team that had been to three NCAAs in a row and won the Not Invited Tournament with it. Somehow parlayed that into the UT gig, where he took over a team with four returning starters and five straight NCAA bids, and went 15-16.

Cuonzo Martin took over a crap team (17-16 the year before), and after one losing season, went 24-12 and 26-9.

Congeniality has nothing to do with how good or bad a coach is. Buzz wasn't good enough to coach in the SEC and that should have been apparent. He wasn't even good enough to win the WAC. We'll see if Martin is, but taking over a poor team and winning the MVC in three years is a good sign.

100% agree with this

Those always sells thousands of tickets, don't they?

The trash that came through the turnstiles while Pearl was here won't be missed. Just because Buzz sucked at coaching doesn't mean a stand up guy can't win.

Ding ding ding--there's the magic watchword.

At the end of the day most fans don't care about class. The classiest coach in America is going to get dumped if he can't run with the big boys.

When have I ever said winning wasn't important? It's the most important thing for coaches today. But having class and dignity doesn't prevent winning. Representing the University in a positive light should never be discounted.
