Tamari's Out...What Happens Next

Hey hey...so this photo helps me. The true traditional 'guards' are the seven sitting on the front row. I think (?)

The roster is confusing. For example, Franklin is listed as a guard. And, she is the shortest on the back row. But, she is tough. Maybe she can help down low.

JMO the way I see it now certainly may completely different from Coach Harper. In terms of playing time.

Horston, Powell, Hollingshead, Puckett, Franklin, Darby, Striplin, Walker, Suarez, Miles, Pissott, and Wynn. Of course if Jackson comes back which I am beginning to think won't happen she would be right there with Horston.

I'm watching defenders and the best are Horston, Hollingshead, Walker and Franklin. Powell, Striplin and Puckett are good defenders with Darby and Suarez just fair. Suarez is good inside but when she plays on the perimeter guards blow by her like she is standing still. When she decides she is an inside player then we might have a really good player. As long as she is trying to play guard she is just to turnover prone. Justine is going to be a very good player you can see she has played against weak competition and now is needing to catch up with players that are quicker and stronger. Miles is just way down the rotation as is Wynn.
Agree with a lot, but for Sara to get more minutes than Tess, she has to start making her shots. I think in the next games she may get more opportunity to show she can do that. Right now, Sara has the second worst field goal percentage (not counting Edie, who has only played 18 minutes), on the team. Tess needs to shoot more.
To compare…

Minutes played. T-195, S-125

Field goal%. T-.381, S-.286

3 Point %. T-.400, S-.238

The other stats are based on a per game basis and since Tess has played more, are not apples to apples. Tess has 1 rebound more than Sara in more minutes, Sara has 4 more assists, but the same number of turnovers, in less minutes. Not on the stats list: Sara blocks defenders to open a way for our player to shoot a layup, Tess has quick hands and knocks balls loose from opponents and someone else gets credit for the steal. Both have leadership qualities, and both play smart.

Still a small sample on the FG%. Tess started 2-13 on 3s last year but finished at 40%. It takes about 40 data points to get a relevant mean.

It’s all we have for now, and Tess is at 40% 3 point shooting now. If that improves, great, would like to see her shoot more. It’s Sara’s shot that has to significantly improve, and yes, as time goes by, I hope and expect it will.

I do think the transfer portal girls have put more pressure on the sophomores.

As a freshman, people love you because you looked great on tape in high school. This portal is going to make you work extra hard to ramp up game for the sophomore year.

As example, this year, no one expects much from Pissott...whatever she chips in is great.

However, I think the new girls pressured Sara, Karo, Brooklyn, Wynn, etc. Reduced minutes = more pressure to show what ya got. I think Sara is coming around. As a junior, Tess had more minutes and is still performing as the Tess we know and love.

Sarah and Marta. Coach said Marta was shooting 60 percent in practice but to this point only 21 percent in games. We could put Pissott in there she can shoot it like Tess over a extended total of shots, but coaches say not ready for prime time. In this up coming game I think I would still work something like Jill, Karoline and Jasmine, Marta inside, Jordan and Sarah, Powell and Walker or Miles, Justine and Tess. Guess that only leaves Wynn as this roster has suddenly gotten a lot smaller.

Justine has Caitlin Clark range!! Hope they can fast track her development.

I like that plan for the next game.

We have December to work it out. No one expects them to compete with Stanford.

When Jasmine returns, I'll be interested to see if she can be like Dye for our inside game. A hair short, but so was Charles Barkley.

While Jackson is out we could play it like this in the tough games:

(target minutes)

Darby needs to shoot 7 threes per game. Every time she's shot 7 or more 3s in a game, she has hit multiple.

Keep getting Pissott, Miles and Wynn minutes in blowouts.

They have practiced all kinds of different lineups, but with Key out, it’s almost like starting over. Practices will change. Which player, or combination of players produce the most? Does Franklin play better as the only post, or does she play better with Jillian or Striplin in the game with her, and that applies to Jillian and Striplin as well. Where do Marta and Sara fit? It’s a lot to figure out, and a short amount of time to do it. Then, the best players, or combination of players must become accustomed to playing together. Plus, we still don’t know about Rickea. It’s a lot to decide, I bet Kellie is seeing this in her sleep.

Let's talk about roles going forward:

Powell: run offense efficiently, coach on the court, distribute and shoot wide open 3s.
Darby: shoot any 3 you can get off comfortably, use ball fakes to draw fouls and get to the FT line. All teammates should kick to her any time she is open so she gets at least 7 threes per game.
Horston: continue to drive and create her shot. Watch for a double team and pass before it gets there.
Franklin: she already knows her role and seems to do it well. No adjustments with her.
Hollingshead: show up at the top of the key and on the block. There are maybe 5 players in NCAA basketball that can guard her effectively in both of these places on the court. Take wide-open 3s and mid-range. Attack the glass.
Puckett: Keep shooting open 3s and mid-range. Don't press for shots, let them come. Continue to play your very technical, controlled version of basketball.
Suarez: It's easy... be Draymond, not Luka. I get it Luka is sexy and it's fun to think you have those moves but leave that for the pickup games. We need a Draymond. Rebound, shoot wide-open 3s. Be a great passer out of the post and FT line area.
Striplin: Be Danny Ainge, be our tough player. Rebound and stretch the D with your excellent shot. Draw fouls on the block.
Walker, Wynn, Miles: Stop shooting for a while outside of a layup. Be a pass-first player. Focus on passing, great defense, and rebounding. Any shot these three are taking is usually a shot better taken by another player.
Pissott & Edie: 3 point specialists. Work on extending range, getting physically stronger, and playing great defense.

Great analysis, sounds right to me. Especially like your role for Marta. I would add for Walker Wynn Miles the layups you're allowed to attempt do not include those thrown in desparation as players a foot taller surround you. Would also add it's essential JH stay healthy and stay under control.

Just wanted to mention, of the 3 we’re talking about as post players, only Striplin has made a 3 point shot, so far. Striplin and Jillian both have nice looking shots away from the basket, and I expect we’ll capitalize on that.

Not going to have the height to hang w/Stanford at their place. But, I think we can maybe beat Florida and perhaps Bama. We have to play well, Times have changed.
Don't think we can stop Stanfords big girl. Boston could not. Key was our best chance and I am not sure she could have stopped her. Understandably people are upset with our record but we are not a sub 500 team and we are almost certainly going to make theo NCAA tournament. You just can't ignore who we have lost to. We have a whole lot of good pieces with or without Jackson. Our players will get better with experience and time. A Final 4 run is still a possibility as things should stabilize over the rest of the season.

This team has a lot of flexibility. As mentioned we have some bigs who can shoot outside. We have players who can play the 3 or 4 offensively, but guard a 5 defensively. I see Franklin playing the 5 offensively (as she is or strongest and best passing big) but maybe guarding a 4 defensively. Horston can even play the point but guard a 4. So look for Kellie to use our flexibility as we move forward. One way or another the Jackson situation needs to be resolved.

Don’t think I’d load Horston like that. I’d try to keep her under 35. Circumstances may deem otherwise.
