Team News (current roster)

There is really no way to know what is going through his head but didn't he tweet something about being excited to see Chandler commit. That would lead me to believe he is still engaged with the team and his role. I am still pretty excited about what he could bring to the table if he continues to develop. He is long and athletic and plays with energy and those type guys don't grow on trees. Do we know he is against a redshirt or was that someone's speculation?
Seems like it was suggested in one of the VQ updates from Rob Lewis, maybe. Talked about Pember redshirting and that it seemed Gaines was not in favor of it, most likely (IMO) because he feels he already did that by attending prep school for a year, post graduate. He is already 20 years old, and will be 21 in January. For perspective, Grant Williams is only 40 days older than Gaines.

Rather than who’s starting I think the most interesting thing to see will be who our 2-3 most productive guards will be and all the different lineups. Barnes and staff ends up going with. Does Springer eventually overtake JJJ, or maybe does he even take away some minutes from Vescovi/Bailey and end some games sharing PG duties with JJJ or someone else? Who does the staff trust more, Vescovi or Bailey, or he could theoretically play them both and have our best shooting line up out there? Does he end up staggering Keon and Springers minutes or trust them enough to play together? Basically all of our guards can play multiple positions so the lineup possibilities are near endless.

Gonna be interesting to see how a lot of things play out, especially with our guard/SF rotation and lineups.

Really can’t wait for basketball season. Fingers crossed

There was a writer that described our backcourt as "an embarrassment of riches," and your post is illustrating why.

I’d assume we’re in good shape with Pons now. Would be weird for him to post something at 10pm about changing his mind

If we lose Keon and Springer and say best case scenario we land Chandler, Mashack, Banchero and Smith I definitely see minutes on the wing where Gaines could be needed next year.

Hypothetically...

Chandler/Bailey
Vescovi/Mashack
James/Gaines/Pember
Banchero/ORN/Walker
Smith/Plavsic

You miss on Banchero and/or Smith and the need for Gaines is even bigger.
Why do we assume that Johnson and Springer are going to go pro but JJJ isn't? Regardless of what Vol fans think of him he's every bit the NBA prospect as the other two.

I think that they have felt pretty good about getting KC for sometime now but having him actually pull the trigger was big. Yes, I think they really like the fact that he knows both Smith and Banchero and is actively working both guys.

No they still aren't doing normal stuff.

Keon and JJJ are totally healthy. Keon is drawing the kind of praise for a player I've never heard coming out of the program with this staff.

I think Banchero, Smith, Maishack, Houstan and Bediako are all legit possibilities.
-Rob Lewis, VQ.

The bigger point is that I doubt we lose 3 guys early to the NBA...you’ve made quite a few predictions about this team, curious to see how many and which turn out to be accurate.

According to Atlanta Vol, we're closing in on landing Banchero. That would obviously be huge. I think this class will be 5 signees after one-and-dones and a transfer so let's close it out with Banchero, Smith, Maschack, and Houstan and call it a day.

These are unprecedented times for UT basketball. If, and it's a big if, this momentum continues, the Barnes era at UT may eclipse the Pearl & Mears eras and become the golden era of UT basketball.
Sit back and enjoy the ride, gentlemen!!

Houstan is interesting, haven’t heard much about him and Tennessee from anyone other than VQ.
Same here. I mentioned it just yesterday responding to Golfballs post inquiring about SF/wings. An article from Busting Brackets sort of broke down the schools recruiting Houstan and suggested Tennessee would not spend much time recruiting Houstan and would be better served spending their efforts on Banchero and Smith. Not sure what kind of relationship we currently have with him, but we certainly have deeper relationships with PB and JS, so that is no surprise.

All common sense predictions. It's not hard to predict who the top 8 are going to be and I think it's laughable at some of the opinions of JJJ as a player. I personally think JJJ will likely go pro before the other 2. I don't know much about Springer, but knowing the Johnson family story I'd be surprised if he was a one and done type.

Johnson is currently a projected late lottery pick. If his play matches his hype, what do you think is going to hold him back from taking the one-and-done route? Certainly not the Johnson family story. You strike while the iron is hot. He can single-handedly rewrite the Johnson family story with an NBA lottery pick contract.

So we know for a fact we lose Fulk, Pons, EJ and likely at least 1 of JJJ, Johnson and Springer. At very least we lose 3 seniors. So is Barnes taking 3 or 4 guys in this class? Or 5...I don’t know anything about Bediako, but it would seem most likely we would end up with Chandler, Banchero, Smith and either Houston or Mashack. Right? PG, PF, PF, SF/SG

His family is big on academics and I just think he'll invest time into college. It would not surprise me to see him stay until he gets his degree before moving on. Just my opinion and would not surprise me either way he was to go.

My guess is that the staff will recruit as if they have 4 spots available. The odds of only losing 3 guys is slim, and with the opportunity to upgrade the talent level based on our targets tells me that we won’t stop at 3 if we feel good about 4 or 5 kids.

You can go to the NBA after one year and continue to pursue your degree either online or post-career. Especially with the prevalence of Zoom classes now because of COVID, I don't think he will be held back by academics. He could easily pursue his degree while still playing in the NBA, even if it's just like one class a semester or a few in the offseason. And if he choose not to do that the door is always open for a return to school post-career. Plenty of athletes have done it.

I just don't see someone turning down a Lottery Pick contract and risking a career ending injury for school.

I understand the emphasis on academics, but if you can set your family up for life after one year in college, you have to seriously consider takbig that opportunity. The educational experience will always be there and will even still be covered financially if he needs it later on.

Why not? It's happened numerous times over the years and it's usually been from a kid who's family value education and ethics over money and fame. If you have ever met them you'd know how important those values are to him and his family. I don't think anyone should turn down guaranteed millions over education but everyone doesn't feel the same way. His family has some wealth I believe so it's not like he is currently struggling. I'm just saying it would not surprise me at all to see him in Knoxville for 2-3 years.

Most definitely, now go tell his mother and father that. I'm just saying that not everyone sees it the same and I'm only guessing based off personal evaluation after meeting and talking with Keon a couple of times.

I’m not saying those values aren’t important to them. And I totally respect and admire that they feel that way. But an education and a degree aren’t something with a timeline or restrictions on when or how you get it. He can get his degree while playing professional basketball or after. It’s entirely possible.

And even if his family has wealth, I’m sure it’s not NBA lottery pick wealth, and that won’t make a lick of difference if he experiences a potential career ending or career altering injury. You take the guaranteed money while you can.

All this being said, the point might be moot and if he struggles this year and his stock falls he might stay an extra year or two. So no one really knows. But I’m fairly confident that if he is a lottery pick he is going to leave.

IIRC you’ve also claimed JJJ as the best player, and that he would be running the offense as well as starting and getting the most minutes.

Not sure Barnes turns away any of those guys
