I bet it evens out as the season goes. Of the 5 guards I think Bailey will end up avg the least minutes. Barnes coached the FR tonight with bench time. Not sure many thought Bailey would lead the team in minutes
Minutes tonight...
Bailey 35
Pons 33
Vescovi 33
James 30
Fulky 23
Anosike 14
Johnson 13
Springer 9
Nkamhoua 9
I honestly expected more from him tonight and I still expect more moving forward. He looked like the same player as last year tonight. Good but not great and missing that easy layup to put the game away.I’m
I’m going to predict JJJ as our best player this year. I love the freshman but if JJJ stays healthy he will show why he was a 5 star.
There are tons of minutes for all three but I expect it to balance out more as the season goes along. NBA scouts are not stupid and these two freshman will eventually be upping their minutes dramatically. You might look at all of the box score before putting JJJ on the bench. He puts up Scottie Pippen numbers for us usually leading or being 2nd in every stat.
I took the bait and looked up the box score for JJJ. Very average line 8pts 6rebounds in 30 minutes. I think he will have better lines with fewer minutes moving forward. You might look at all of the box score before putting JJJ on the bench. 3 steals, 3 assists 4/4 FTs, not very average when you dig a bit further compared to everyone else on the team. That's 3rd in points, 2nd in rebounds, 1st in FTs, 1st in steals, 2nd in assists all with being 4th in minutes. A bit better than average I feel, nobody on our team stuffs stats like JJJ.I took the bait and looked up the box score for JJJ. Very average line 8pts 6rebounds in 30 minutes. I agree Keon and Jaden will get more minutes moving forward. I agree that one and maybe both will likely be drafted higher than JJJ. I just think at the end of the season, if JJJ stays healthy, we will look at his scoring, assist, turnover and rebounding numbers and he will be 2nd or 3rd in all those categories. He is also a good defender. I am a fan of the freshman too but just like JJJ’s game. I think on a team like this with lots of talented pieces, his game is a perfect fit. There are tons of minutes for all three but I expect it to balance out more as the season goes along. 8 pts, 6 rebs, 3 assts, 3 stls, 1 TOI took the bait and looked up the box score for JJJ. Very average line 8pts 6rebounds in 30 minutes. I think he will have better lines with fewer minutes moving forward.
Never met the guy, but he seem like a fairly quiet and mind mannered person in general. So I was encouraged to see the fire from him in the first game of the season. Maybe its the comport of having a year under his belt or maybe its Barnes begging him and SV to be more vocal on the court. Either way, if he plays as aggressive all year as he did last night, they'll be in good shape.8 pts, 6 rebs, 3 assts, 3 stls, 1 TO
Not bad when you account for the pace of the final 30 minutes. He also defended without committing a single foul. Maybe he should be more aggressive defensively. The missed layup was bad. He hits that and finishes 3-6, 0-3 from 3 and has 10 points. JJJ is a jack of all trades, master of none, right now. He isn’t great, yet, but he has the kind of tools to be an all-SEC player next year if he sticks around.
Agree, I just don't see a reason for any of these guys to play more than 30 minutes. We just have too many quality players for that.I agree Keon and Jaden will get more minutes moving forward. The Vols were impressive in many areas, but they’re ability to completely take out McKinley Wright who came into the game averaging 22.5 ppg was maybe the most impressive. Wright was 3-for-8 for eight points and finished with more turnovers (5) than field goals. The most disappointing element of the game from the fans’ perspective was not getting more of an opportunity to see what Jaden Springer and Keon Johnson could do. Johnson got 13 minutes and Springer just 9. Both flashed in their time on the court though Johnson will need to clean up the five turnovers.
-VQBarnes said after the game that he felt like those two were hurt by the 11 days of missed practice and the short prep time for Colorado. He just felt more comfortable going with the veterans against a tough opponent and he didn’t want to put the freshmen in a situation that might hurt their confidence if they weren’t ready. It’s definitely not about ability. Tennessee continues to aggressively seek another non-conference opponent at this time to help mitigate the loss of their first four games.
I don't think having our most consistent rebounder on the bench is very smart especially considering that we struggle in that area already. JJJ is never going to be a bench player because he is so versatile. He is an excellent rebounder for a guard. To me JJJ would be the perfect 25 minute a game 6th man because he is so versatile. He can play up to 4 positions and guard just about anybody under 6-10.
A 25 minute a game sixth man is not really a bench player. He basicly plays starter minutes. Turner did this a couple of years ago.I don't think having our most consistent rebounder on the bench is very smart especially considering that we struggle in that area already.
