Team News (current roster)

I can’t recall ever having this level of depth such that a known player like JJJ is competing with 2 other guys to be starting. Also I doubt few if any of us had SV locked in as a starter in front of JJJ and Springer which has to mean SV has improved greatly over the off season. If the season can avoid getting Rona’ed then all the BVS fans will finally have something out of Knoxville to be excited to watch!

I think this is an inaccurate post. I always felt Vescovi was going to start. He is a floor general that Barnes covet. He will be a 4 year starter unless he leaves early for the NBA. Better talent around him will help him.

The problem with JJJ is sometimes he disappears. He needs to grow out of that.

All SV needed was to get in a little better shape and adjust to the length and defensive pressure that was getting thrown at him last year. Those really were the only deficiencies I saw with him you might add he needed a little work on the defensive end but I think that was more due to his not being in tip top shape and still adjusting to the speed.

He has plenty of upside. Guy can shoot lights out, and can really distribute the ball, knows how to get in and out of tight spots and passes the ball extremely well. Hes gonna be great player for us.
You left out his biggest flaw which was an absence of a right hand. He was very deficient in his off hand. Hopefully that is where he has spent the majority of his time working.

Nobody is passing up NBA money if they are a first rounder unless they are already from a wealthy family. You can buy your own college after the draft if you are really into academics. I drove by this kids house yesterday. It's not a mansion. Not even close.
This is not about the kids house. It's a nice house. This is about delusional posters who actually think that these kids are gonna pass up first round money.

The biggest part of Vescovi’s game this year versus last year is that last year there weren’t the same threats to dish the ball to. Teams were able to focus on shutting SV down when the only other outside threats were an inconsistent catch-and-shoot Bowden and a hobbled JJJ. JJ was also inconsistent. This year’s SV can make those wicked passes to Keon, JJJ, Springer, or Bailey as well as several other options in the post.

I doubt JJJ is having to compete with Springer or Bailey for time, more likely they would be competing with Vescovi for those minutes. The reason I have a problem with the James vs Vescovi argument is simple and something these guys are not reporting, JJJ plays SF (Point Forward some) in College (He'll play PG at the next level I think), he's far and away the best 3 spot we have in terms of all-around game, especially when you take the combo of defense and rebounding into account. The offense often runs through him because he has point guard skills and is often a mismatch when the other teams 3 is guarding him. He simply provides too much to the box scores to be hunting playing time. As for Vescovi, he's been great, better than advertised and certainly a fan favorite but he faces Springer, Johnson and Bailey for playing time at the 1 & 2 spots. Keon is the most natural 2 so now I think that leaves Vescovi/Springer/Bailey battling for most of their minutes at the 1. There will be times when we go big at the 3 backcourt spots with Pons/JJJ/Keon to help out on our rebounding deficiencies and to really clamp down the perimeter defensively. Gonna be a ton of different lineups, gonna be fun to watch and everyone is going to have their favorite players. In the end I think Coach Barnes will put the best 5 on the court at the right time long before I think any of us will. :)

I look at it like there are 120 minutes per game available at the 1-3 and 5 players will be competing for the vast majority of those minutes. I realize Vescovi will not be playing the 3 and I doubt Keon plays point but they are almost interchangeable. The guys have enough flexibility to allow however Is hot to play more and the guys around him can adjust. I think the 4-5 are similar in that there are 80 minutes available and 3 players will get the majority of those minutes.

JJJ can grab a few minutes at the 4 and Pons could grab a few at the 3, but that’s pretty accurate. So if JJJ could go 5 minutes at the 4 then that’s 125 available minutes for our perimeter 5. On the Pennington TV show they pointed out that Barnes really needs the early OOC games to figure out the rotation for the SEC schedule.

25 minutes of balls to the wall defense would take a tremendous amount of stamina. Maybe ticket could even find 10 minutes a game if played with that level of intensity?

Waste most of my time on Vols football in the recruiting forum and never come to this forum so apologies in advance. Looking for a decent team preview to catch up on new guys and expected rotation before the season starts. Anybody have a link?

Go Vols!

I don’t have a specific link, but it’s pretty much going to be 8 regulars while one or two of the other 5 could emerge and contribute, especially the posts if the 1st 3 get into foul trouble or are injured.

Perimeter: Vescovi, Bailey, Keon Johnson, Jaden Springer

Point/Forward: Josiah Jordan James

Posts: Pons, Fulkerson, Anosike

The next 5 all have challenges to overcome if they will get much playing time. Gaines unfortunately is battling multiple future NBA first round pics for his minutes.

Then Uros and Nkamhoua are possible post contributors but both have a lot to prove. Gaines will have a tough battle for perimeter minutes. Walker has a lot of potential as either a wing or smallish post. Pember is a project and it’s not clear if he’s going to be a very long perimeter player or a super skinny post.

I have a feeling that with Jaden and Keon's ability to attack the paint, it will leave Bailey and Vescovi on the perimeter to knock down wide open 3's.
I have a feeling that with so much talent around him, you’ll see Vescovi dropping sick dimes all over the floor!
GBO!!

So are we expecting everyone back? I assume the cases were relatively mild?
From Basilio this morning:

"I'm not naming names here but both guys figure to be missing when the Vols begin practice in a few days. The long and short of it is that everyone involved in college hoops everywhere are taking this season moment by moment."

Tennessee will return to the court on Friday to resume practice as they prepare for the added game against UT-Martin to open the season before facing Cincinnati next Saturday.
Victor Bailey has really made a push and is considered by some to be the Vols’ best offensive weapon at the guard spot. That’s not to say he’s the best guard by any means, not at all, but offensively the word is he’s been lighting it up.
Keon Johnson continues to impress as does Santiago Vescovi. If we had to guess at a starting line-up right now we’d go with John Fulkerson, Yves Pons (both of whom are on the 50 man John Wooden watch list), Johnson, Vescovi and Josiah James though that final spot could still change.

I love it! I was under the impression that Bailey would just be a catch and shoot 3 point shooter so that's awesome! Would love to see him and Springer (if he doesn't start) come of the bench and bring some nice scoring off of the bench. I see Bailey as a nice 6th man.
