Tell Me Again How Pearl Can't Coach

I've noticed this in every game in every season since Bruce Pearl has been our coach. We always get a big lead, then almost lose it. It happens in nearly every game. That's just the way it goes when you play Bruce's style.

One time, in Bruce's 3rd year, we had a 19 point lead that went to just a 1 point lead in LESS THAN A MINUTE in one game.

So now we are keeping up with victories by point total? I would like to win every game by 50 points, but the last time I checked, a W counts as a win regardless of the margin.

Love one game reactions.

This thread and the Woolridge one are prime examples of that.
Indeed. Quite the rollercoaster eh? I don't see how you can't feel good after tonight though. Good night. Here's hoping we hustle/play with energy against Kansas. I also hope the crowd is loud.

Whatever you do, never say anything positive about your coach and/or the team.

How come I get the feeling that some of you aren't happy that the team won tonight?

Tonight was a good win. I have said that multiple times.

However, just saying no reason to give him another raise. It's one game, but threads like this make it seem like we just won a National Semifinal game.

Yea I'm on a high after this one I didn't know what to expect. But Kansas will bring us back to earth.

This game, though, led me to believe we'll be just fine in SEC play except playing UK. We can still compete!! GO VOLS!

Memphis took Kansas to the wire, and Memphis looked confused against the Vols. Plus, we're playing at home, right? Don't sell us short. The win last night showed us playing more comfortably than we have played all year.

If we somehow pull out a win against Kansas on Sunday night, then let's revisit this thread. A really great win though last night though.

Fair enough. I think people are just enjoying the win as they should. There were a lot of people watching that game last night wondering what kind of team was going to show up and I think most were pleasantly surprised.

Kansas is a whole different monster though.

The first half was a statement coming out.

There were lapses in the second half on defense again, which unfortunately happens very often.

I call it the "Four Minutes of Funk" due to it usually lasts between two TV timeouts. Sometimes longer, sometimes shorter, but guaranteed to happen. It's been a staple since he first got here.

I thought last night was a very good coaching job all in all. The guys were ready to play and showed as much effort as I've seen out of a UT bball team in a while. Sometimes that is all I will ask for.

Yeah but some of these fools think Pearl should be fired and he knows nothing about the game...Amazing

I haven't heard many if any calling for him to be fired.

The comment about knowing nothing of the game is rediculous, every coach at just about any level of college athletics knows something of the game. Great coaches know more and are able to do more with their players than others. I simply don't think Pearl is a great coach, good but certainly not great.

Anyone who thinks Pearl can't coach doesn't know anything about basketball.

Then please explain why our best option to attack an undersized Oklahoma State team in the tournament last year was to take 33 three-point shots out of a total of 56 field goal attempts, including 9 three-point attempts (out of 14 shots) by our center.

I am still so incensed by that idiocy that I don't even have to look those numbers up.

We lose one game to a team that was on par with us and you say Pearl can't coach? Wow. Go back to following football recruiting.

We haven't been able to play halfcourt offense (or halfcourt defense, for that matter) the entire time Pearl's been here. He got away with it when he had Lofton and JaJuan Smith bailing him out, but neither of those guys are coming back. The Oklahoma State game was a microcosm. We had an obvious height and athletic advantage down low......and we made no attempt at all to exploit it. We were content to just sit out there and heave up threes. And when enough of them didn't fall, we went home.

I want Pearl to be successful, but he's never going to win in March if his teams continue to be clueless in the half court. We either score in transition or we're lost. You can't make a run in March that way.

I remember all the threads after your win against Western Kentucky about how Kiffin was going to lead you to a 10-2 record this year.

Probably the same invalids that started the one's in the Basketball Thread.

he isnt a bad coach. that said, ask me again after the Sat game...

So now the test is, "Can he beat the Nr. 1 team?".

Just a thought - has anyone else beat Kansas? Of course not! So all those other coaches are not any good?

Guess Bruce will only become a good coach when he goes undefeated all the way through the National Championship.

One other thought which bothers me with all the negative about him - what is record against Florida?

That's a very weak argument.

That's why 1 game reactions rule.

Although to be fair, Kiffin did pretty good against #1 ranked teams this year. So may Pearl has that for him.

I think Pearl can coach, but once he got big time players, he tried to change his style, and that's not him.

He's a motivator, and his defensive style creates offense. When we try to slow down defense and slow down our offense, we get stagnant.
