Tell Me Again How Pearl Can't Coach

We haven't been able to play halfcourt offense (or halfcourt defense, for that matter) the entire time Pearl's been here. He got away with it when he had Lofton and JaJuan Smith bailing him out, but neither of those guys are coming back. The Oklahoma State game was a microcosm. We had an obvious height and athletic advantage down low......and we made no attempt at all to exploit it. We were content to just sit out there and heave up threes. And when enough of them didn't fall, we went home.

I want Pearl to be successful, but he's never going to win in March if his teams continue to be clueless in the half court. We either score in transition or we're lost. You can't make a run in March that way.

dude... its pointless to try and use logic to those in love with bruce pearl. they think we've never been to the tourney before... we've never won the sec before. they use the 24 hour #1 ranking as their "ultimate, undisputed, crushing argument" that CBP is god. they can't spell flex... or 1-2-1-1. they don't know what jump to the ball means. they think post play is people joking around on volnation. and they don't think CBP should be able to get his players to train, or play D... and if he can't or won't coach effort... that's ok with them. cuz if he left... we'd never go to the tourney again.

oh yeah... and it's not CBP fault we've had TEN players dismissed or suspended under his watch in 4.5 years.

I think Pearl can coach, but once he got big time players, he tried to change his style, and that's not him.

He's a motivator
, and his defensive style creates offense. When we try to slow down defense and slow down our offense, we get stagnant.

didn't see that one... hilarious.

Maybe this forum needs to allow you "knowledgeable" fans educate those of us who you think are undereducated in basketball. Then again, you may only think you know so much more than the rest of us. Or even better, maybe you "experts" could give Bruce a few pointers.

we've tried. but u guys think a 24 hour #1 ranking auto stamps your program "elite" and puts pearl in a class with coach k, roy, bill self, dean smith, bobby knight, adolph rupp and john wooden.

You're the only one I see mentioning those things.

"We've" tried? Isn't that a little presumptious?

dude... there are probably 30 or maybe more threads on CBP coaching ability... his lack of half-court offense... his ridiculous comments about not wanting to coach effort... his generally mediocre in game adjustments and end game calls. these any many more areas of his lack of coaching skills have been well hashed out on this forum.

but the pearl drinkers just come in a say.... "#1 ranking man".

You do realize that you can take your post, twist it around a little bit and say "But the Pearl haters....."
Supporting your coach and team does not make anyone less knowledgeable. I think most people can determine on their own who knows what they're talking about and who doesn't. This board has a tendency to either lump people into the "lovers" or "haters" group and each says the other doesn't know what they're talking about.

People are going to spin things so they support their argument. There are some on this board who's hatred is shall I say a little over the top and refuse to acknowledge anything positive about the team or staff. It was obvious last night that there were some posters who were actually disappointed that the team won so they couldn't move in for the kill after the recent events.

It works both ways.

It is so cute. The same old people/ Fulmer-ites, that want Bruce to run the stall and some slowed down half court game are the same ones that think the women's game is better.

There have been quite a few teams that have succeed with a fast tempo attack. Quit trying to make it sound like the only way to win a basketball tournament is playing in the half court.

Go back to following recruiting and talking about how when you were in high school you played in short pants and your coach ran the four corner stall and you like it.

pretty sure you're off on that. The issue is when UT is forced into a halfcourt game and their offense is non-existent. Run when you can but we should have a backup plan

ban me if you want but this is quote is retarded.

i loved pearls first two years. i played the full court pressure D style in HS and college with long shorts and that style can be awesome and is a blast to play.

i can't stand stall offense. but you obviously have no clue about college basketball... and neither does pearl if you both think you don't need proficient half court O to win against top notch talent and top notch coaching.

but this year and last years team can't even play the pressure D like pearl wants... he has admitted himself he can't get them to work hard enough to implement it fully.

there's your coach.

Exactly. When you are shackled with our D, PG play and rebounding you can't expect to dictate tempo against even shoddy teams. Hence, some semblance of halfcourt organization helps.

I know that doesn't fit your argument very well, but every team that wins the big games can play the big possessions well on either end. Those teams that live by good shooting nights and generating big turnover numbers get their asses handed to them in tight and / or big games. We tend to get ours handed to us by every team with decent guard play that is willing to play a 60 point game.

Beating any decent team with half a roster is good. Pearl should get raise for dealing with all of this.

For dealing with all of what? You mean this mess players he was responsible for bringing into the program brought him?

It makes perfect sense, when a project I am responsible for goes south I should expect a raise. I'll inform my employer about this immediately.

Where you are missing everything is, we have played and won big games in the half court.

I am sure you all won't be happy until Pearl is gone and Phil Jackson is the coach.

Why are the only people who ever mention replacing Pearl his loudest and most uncritical supporters? I have never seen any of the people who are described as bashers call for him to be fired or replaced, only that he have a plan for the basketball team that encompasses the entirety of the game not just selected aspects of it. I love full court pressure and fast break dunks but that isn't a complete game plan. I like the fact that Wayne Chism can step out and hit a three but I expect his butt to be within three or four feet of the paint 75-80% of the time. I expect some semblance of a point guard to play every few years on a team that is going to compete for championships and I expect better character from the players you bring into the program. Those aren't unreasonable expectations and they are all things that would make us better.

Should I assume that you believe the man to be incapable of accomplishing any of those things? If he isn't capable of them then I say we should fire him, I believe, however, he can make them happen so I nor anyone else I know of has called for his firing.

I hate Fake Basketball and despised Failmer.

You missed the mark epically bad.

You can't possibly believe that Pearl has done a good job coaching a half-court game.

Sigh,

Memphis two years ago.
Florida, several time.

We came back on Kansas last year late.

Last year we didn't run to many people out of the gym, and we still won a bunch of games playing different styles of ball.

Some of you all are just too greedy. Last year we lost two of our best players and made one of the longest runs in the SEC tournament in school history. Then we play to the wire with an equally matched team in the tournament and lose at the end.

Pearl has won everywhere he has been. He come here and takes a joke of a program that is living an the laurels of two guys who played here in the 70's. he takes this program and knocks off the two time national champs 3 of 4 times beats the number one team in the nation on their own floor. Takes a team that loses one the best 3 point shooter in college basketball history and almost wins a conference tournament we haven't been to the finals of since the league expanded to 12 teams.

Yeah, he can't coach.

It's not Pearl's fault that Duke Crews and Ramar Smith made poor choices. He didn't put those guns in the car with Tyler Smith. I have never heard about any of these guys being in big legal trouble before they came to UT.
