Ten favorite MLB players of all time

G Brett
N Ryan
O Smith
P Rose
K Ripkin Jr.
D Mattingly
S Carlton
T Williams
A Pujols
W Mays

Random order.
Lots more, too many to choose from.

Frank White best 2nd baseman ever with the glove. Cry all you want Sandburg lovers. Frank was robbed for the record breaker when Ryno had sub par stats. I think it was 8th or 9th GG. Hit for the cycle in a game I saw.
Next to Donnie baseball, the Boog was like a vacuum cleaner at 1st. And had pop.
Lou Brock was special to see, good obp and a walk was as good as a double.
I'm sure more to come when I get my old memory back and this thread gets bumped again.

I know I'm biased but I'm shocked that I only saw one other vote for Rickey. He was the complete 5 tool guy and was absolutely hilarious to boot.

Rocker came after I soured on the Braves, but his deuce was absolutely nasty. In both their primes, I'd take Rocker every day over Rivera.

I'm with BMFPV on the Rose issue. If you let in Rose, the door better open for Jackson. I'm fine with neither getting a spot.

I was really close to adding the Big Hurt and I'm upset with myself that I couldn't find room for Walt Weiss.

I couldn't add Bonds because A. He's a jerk and B. Imo, he was much better pre-roids all around. I think he would have went down as one of, if not the best player of all time. Now he's only remembered as a juiced up slugger.

Eddie Murray was just pure class with amazing talent.

And I wish the Cubs faithful would get in here so Ryno and Grace could get their much deserved attention.

Also who didn't enjoy watching Jim Edmonds play outfield or Vlad in his prime? I could probably throw out names all day.

Who is now the Manager for the Tennessee Smokies.

Did not know that.

Still not enough for most Knoxvillians to drive to Kodak to catch a game. Funny that they advertise that Smokies park is 15 minutes from downtown, when it's closer to 30-35. Going to a game is totally out of the question for anyone further than Bearden, unless you want to spend over an hour in the car both ways.

Edit: and just wait until Concrete Creek East gets completed. Then it will be traffic hell, like every other spot in Sevier County.

The Smokies average close to 4k a game, slightly better than the middle of the pack in the Southern League in one of the league's smaller stadiums. They really don't worry about Knoxville as much as Knoxvillians want to believe.

Without Knoxville fans traveling over, the Smokies would lose more money than West Tennessee.

i'm here. my love fest for Ryno has been well documented here. i'm thrilled to have him just up the road. i need to meet him.

there's probably not a more "ultimate" Cub than Mark Grace. i feel like such a putz for getting misty eyed when he finally got a ring with another team. the guy smokes like a freight train and is hilarious anytime he's near an interview. one of the few guys who could stretch a triple into a single. that makes it even more fitting he was the last Cub to hit for the cycle. he earned my utmost respect when he returned a signed card to me, when i was a kid.

to add to those, The Hawk and The Sarge, Andre Dawson and Gary Matthews, respectively were favs too.

great story about Rickey i know you'll appreciate.

i have a buddy who is a lifelong Cubs season ticket holder. back when he was a younger fan, Rickey was in town for a game. he and his grandfather were giving Rickey the business during the warm ups and Rickey was eating it up. they were calling him Rick to the point where Henderson came over and explained that is was Rickey. my buddies grand-pa explained to him that in order to call him Rickey, he had to give his grandson a game used ball. this was at the begining of a 3 game stand.

towards the end of the 3 game that week, Rickey made a play to end the inning and as he was passing my buddy and his grand-pa, tossed him the ball and kept on running, only to turn around and mouth Rickey to them as he went into the dug out.

i'll admit with the interstate shutdown, it takes a bit longer to get out there, but it's WELL worth the trip. from my house to the stadium, it's 20 minutes when you can go straight through, and i'm smack in the middle of West Knoxville.

the drive home is worse than the drive there.

plus, as the Cubs affiliate, Old Style is on tap every weekend. seriously, it doesn't get much better than that.

I would be more impressed if you can tell me who Billy Chapel is!

great movie, but:

Crash Davis > Ray Kinsella > Billy Chapel

Nuke LaLoosh only seals the deal, meat.

Without Knoxville fans traveling over, the Smokies would lose more money than West Tennessee.

wrong. if they cared so much about the Knoxville area, why didn't they stick around?

If it only takes you 20 minutes from west Knoxville, you're either taking a helicopter or going about 20 over the speed limit the entire way. It took me at least 25 minutes from my apartment in south Knoxville and even longer from my house in Rocky Hill.

Take a guess which county was willing to fund a stadium. If Knoxville hypothetically didn't sit beside Sevier County, there would never be a AA team in Kodak. Or a A team. Probably not even a Rookie class team.
