Ten Thoughts (Offseason)

The culmination of events leading up to Oden's play was a reason why we lost. How soon you forget how that game played out.

And this has nothing to do with dislike of Pearl. It has everything to do with an emphasis on halfcourt D and scrapping that junk of controlled chaos.

I said it was about your need to discredit Pearl's style, not hatred of the coach. And, I still haven't seen any reason to suggest a difference between the play regarding the two styles.

And, we lost because it was a tough game, against a very talented opponent that could've gone either way. It had nothing to do with style. The last 8 minutes were a back and forth slugfest, very tight and there's nothing that validates scrapping that style from this game.

His style of controlled chaos has not worked in the tournament.

Plain and simple. When he scratched it and put an emphasis on halfcourt defense, it gave us the ability to win the close one and advance farther than ever.

It was not coincidence. It works against the shoddy competition in November because you can "out-athlete" the other team. Not so much in March.

End of discussion.

Again, you are basing your criteria on one system working and one not working based upon a difference in one possession, which is patently absurd. You want it to be the difference because it validates many years of criticisms, but "hasn't worked in the tournament" is flat wrong.

As I said before, you would have an argument if we flamed out in the first or second round every year, then made an Elite 8 run after "scrapping" the old system. Unfortunately for your argument, two Sweet 16s in the first three years isn't quite a lack of success. And, the idea that the system change makes us more likely to win close games is absurd. By that logic, it's amazing that we beat Butler in '08 and Virginia in '07, while equally astonishing that we couldn't win a close game against Michigan State this year. The close game theory holds little water unless you have something to show, otherwise.

Also, running a press isn't simply "out athleting" someone if you have a bunch of players who thrive at a faster pace. You still have to execute and play with intensity, style doesn't matter as much as these aspects (along with fitting the personel).

Playing a fast paced, defensively aggressive style has worked and will work if we have the people to run it.

Just give up dude. There's no point in arguing, despite the fact that there is no basis for the assumptions they are making. Just let it go.

I know. I guess, at some point, you have to think common sense takes over. However, I think there is such an entrenchment and so much invested in criticizing Pearl's traditional style, that they are grasping at anything they feel validates their years of arguments with the "Pearlophiles".
