Tennessee’s $8M Nico Iamaleava Gamble at High Risk !!

It's not about Nico being bad. It's about building an offense around Nico. O line, WRs, etc.
I heard this same story about 2 years ago. We have a good QB, but the Oline is terrible, the WRs can’t get separation, and on and on. Then a QB named Herndon Hooker took the reins of that same team, and it was game on. Quick decisions and accurate passes on time is what it takes. Every great college QB doesn’t have to be an NFL type guy (May never play in the NFL) but they bring an it to the college game. These guys are out there and can be had for less than $2M a year out of HS. I would venture Diego did more for Vandy than Nico did for Tenn. And the RS Fr game doesn’t play. Lagway improved Fl as a freshman, Sellers did more for USCe as a RS Fr, aTm won 9 games with basically a Fr, Ark won 7 with a Fr. None earned $2M a year.

Nico is worth every penny. He's gonna be a good one. Kid is young. Still has a lot to learn. Build around the guy and he's gonna win some big games for us. Go Vols!
I agree Nico could be good. He wasn’t that good this year. However according to reports, the Vols spent about $11M this year on NIL. Was / is he worth 20% of the total spent. If he does become great, and players pay continue to rise, who’s to say he doesn’t decide he’s worth $3M and bolts after Tenn paid him through his growing years.
Ah, these are the wonderful days of 20 year olds making a life time of money at such a young age.

None were in the playoffs either

Somebody call Josh Heupel—this ain’t it, chief

Boring half-baked "article" where someone regurgitates a bunch of copy-paste stat information in with a few pithy comments. Yawn. Reeks of AI assisted content, and I wouldn't be surprised if most of this "article" was spit out by one of those programs.

Sports journalism? This ain't it, chief.

G-Mac wasn’t a top 3-4 recruit overall
G-Mac was at one time, a 5*. He was injured and wasn't able to participate in a camp, so they dropped him down to a 4*. Same quarterback as he was before dropping down due to not participating. The offensive line has got to improve or it won't matter who is the quarterback.

With a healthy Sampson we may still lose, but it is a pretty darn close game. Without him Nico was running for his life and didn't have time to make his second or third reads. Heupel has got to replace Sampson and get some GOOD WR in here. And fix the o-line. It may mean he has to make some coaching changes, and when you are the head man, you have to do what needs to be done. I am encouraged for next season.

You must have been watching an entirely different game than everyone else. TN was never really in the game.

I’m convinced college football offenses are not hard to pick up and understand, including Heupel’s. With so many guys hitting the portal and finding immediate playing time in a different system, that tells me the systems are easy to pick up. It’s about having the athletes to execute. That’s all it is. Heupel and these other coaches are not geniuses, they just need the right players

The same offensive line that blocked for a record breaking, sec player of the year rb. They weren’t great but they did enough at times to give a one read then hit the panic button qb enough time to get the ball downfield.

Was that a “good thing” for Tennessee?….as compared to a simple bowl game against decent competition?
The only silver lining is that it completely exposed our weaknesses against elite competition.
Heupel and White certainly can now say…here’s what we need to compete at an elite level…they then let Spyre and our big money donors know what our priorities should be in the portal buying.

I'm still on the fence with Nico - but maybe I am unfairly comparing him to Manning, Dobbs and Hooker who were game changing QB's out of the gate.
