Crazy that there are still that many major unbeatens this late into the Season. The unfairness is that by definition most of those SEC teams have to lose due to the one on one regular season matchups against each other allowing maybe UCLA, Clemson, or someone to wedge their way in over a better one loss SEC squad
Yah, 9 undefeated Power 5 teams might be a record this deep into the season. But it will whittle down, bit by bit:
* Clemson and Syracuse will play next weekend. So that's 1 of the 9 erased.
* UCLA goes to #12 Oregon this coming week. I think they'll be shown to be a bit hollow.
* I would bet money Ole Miss runs into a brick wall in the form of a pissed-off Bama team in three weeks, and is deflated. That's even if they can get past LSU and A&M in between (they might).
* We get the opportunity to knock UGa out of the equation in just a few weeks.
* Ohio State and Michigan don't play until late November. So the B10 could carry 2 forward most of the regular season. In the end, though, only one of them survives (at most; could be a round-robin between the two and Penn State).
I do think it's possible we could have four undefeated conference champions at the end of the regular season:
- ACC Champ Clemson or Syracuse
- B12 Champ TCU
- B10 Champ Ohio St or Michigan
- SEC Champ Tennessee (a man can hope!)
Syracuse-TCU-Michigan-Volunteers would be a nice playoff slate, too, I think. Clears out all the stale, musty air of recent years. I'd like our chances in it.
Go Vols!
