How much of the rush defense improving is due to us getting a lead and forcing teams to pass the ball?

In our 6 SEC games we've defended 210 rushing attempts, avg 3.4 ypc, 9 TDs, 228 passing attempts, 10 TDs

in 2021 8 games 355 rushing attempts, 22 TDs, avg 4.52 ypc, 299 passing attempts 13 TDs

Rushing attempts trending well down, passing attempts trending about same.

Yes, our D has improved dramatically over last season. That DL and our run D has been a big + this year.

What's so exciting about our program is that fact that we still have a long way to go talent and depth wise on the Def side. How this staff has recruited, worked the portal, developed talent and coached scheme is truly remarkable.
The biggest eye opener was the difference in 21 vs 22 outing s against KY. They steamrolled our run D last season. They tried the same scheme this season and outside 2 drives, they were flat dominated. When they went to throw, it only got worse.

Tennessee's defense hasn't looked great at times, and they've given up a lot of yards, but the Vols currently rank 5th in the SEC in scoring defense (which ultimately is the most important stat of them all) at 21.9 points per game. Considering the tempo that our offense plays with, I think that's solid.

We're also second in the SEC in rushing yards, behind only Georgia.

I saw a post or tweet earlier in the week that noted this was the best Tennessee scoring defense in several years. Did anyone see that stat or have that post/tweet handy?

.
Freak bringing it!

We play a very aggressive defense which is suspect to long pass plays at times when a blitz fails. We don't have talent in secondary to win a lot of 1-on-1 matchups as well.

However, our defense is good enough to win games. Frankly, the defense wasn't the letdown in our loss in Athens.
I can see improvement with our pass coverage. We are at least contesting a lot of balls. I've also been impressed with our LB's pass coverage lately. I see vast improvement.

Vols according to NCAA.com stats is ranked 11th in total rush yards allowed per game and ALSO ranked 11th in rushing yds/attempt. Now that is pretty solid rushing defense and mostly eliminates any skewing of stats by "teams needing to catch up"

Not much, we have been solid against good rushing teams all year. Our D is also number 1 in creating turnovers. Our D has played tough this year. GBO

Here’s something else interesting. I think most people on here would claim Clemson and Texas have far superior defenses when compared to us. We’re within a point of both teams in PPG allowed though. Clemson gives up 21.0 and Texas gives up 21.3. We’re at 21.9. That’s pretty amazing.

We desperately need more speed on our defense. Mitchell (a complete flop imo) and Flowers in particular are terribly slow. I will never understand why Mitchell plays a single down ahead of Beasley.

It's called rotating!!
Beasley has more tackles by a mile than JuJu. Not really sure what your talking about there

Mitchell has had very good moments this season

Our Secondary is a lot to be desired. Can't play bump without getting burnt and will not lookback for the ball when defending. Reminds me of the 2013-2016 years. Opps! who was the DB coach then?

Since pruitts 2019 team, which gave up 1 point less I believe.
wonder if it’s possible to calculate points given up per play defended or points allowed per minutes defending? These 2 stats might reflect even more favorably on this year’s D

The important number is points given up per possession. In football there are normally equal possessions. Teams have many more possessions when they play us because of our speed and efficiency on offense. This means we probably have the 2nd to 3rd best defense in the league due to Kentucky and LSU's pace of game and amount of defensive possessions they are playing. Also...not sure how many games that Bama, LSU, and Kentucky have used their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string players in mop up.

For anyone questioning whether the defensive coaches are developing guys, look at Beasley. He was possibly the biggest whipping boy on VN last season and now there’s rarely a negative post about him

That being said….. we beat three of the four in front of us. The other Georgia was an away game and was a huge advantage for Georgia! It’s also hard to look back and compare defenses with how crazed offenses are these days. RPO’s Vs defense is crazy and nerve racking lol

When you consider the number of times our defense faces (due to the number of scores our offense produces) I think this is a pretty good defense. If the another team (not an offensive monster as we are) turned the ball over to their defense as often as we do, well I'd like to see their numbers.

Fixed your post. Rotating is one thing, playing a majority of the snaps is another.

I think we’re pretty good against the run period unless it’s a running qb. Stats are probably skewed somewhat due to our offense forcing teams to pass more

I think when you are looking at a defense that is on the field as much as ours due to our style of offense, the most telling stats to look at are Opponent Points Per Play and Opponent Yards Per Play. Those metrics put us on a level playing field with teams that play a much slower pace. The defense doesn't look nearly as bad through this lens (and conversely our offense isn't quite as dominant though still top 10). We're number 18 in the NCAA if you look at Opponent Points Per Play and number 44 in Opponent Yards Per Play. I tried to put the table in my post, but it was a mess. Here's a link:
