I'm all for continuity, and understand coming in and having a feel for the system etc. But I hear ya. Keeping everything 'in the family' is played. Judging by our offensive results the last 2 years, let's hope we get an injection of something new.Played under HYPE? Coached at UCF. Part of the "Family".
This is a nice move!
Here are interesting details about him:
College Career
- Team: University of Oklahoma Sooners (2009–2012)
- Position: Quarterback
- Achievements: Jones had an impressive college career, becoming one of the most statistically successful quarterbacks in Oklahoma history. He threw for over 16,000 yards and 123 touchdowns, setting multiple school and Big 12 Conference records.
Professional Career
- NFL Draft: Selected in the 4th round (115th overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2013 NFL Draft.
- NFL Teams: Played as a backup quarterback for the Steelers from 2013 to 2017. He also had brief stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders but didn’t play in regular-season games for those teams.
- Alternative Leagues: Jones played in the XFL for the Dallas Renegades in 2020. His XFL career was notable because he was one of the first players signed by the league, reuniting him with his college coach, Bob Stoops.
Very few teams are successful at this. The more plays you run with 18-20 year olds the more likely you are to have a mistake. And bog down in the red zone. Let’s dig deeper. You are correct on the premise of having a team stacked at all positions. Vols were not that fortunate this year. We are a good team and I am very proud of what they accomplished, but when you are a middle of the pack team and or even on the high side of that, you do not typically have the luxury of going all out balls to the wall on Offense. Grinding it out, which our team could do w the right play calling and good execution, wins games for millions of football teams across the universe. Throwing long on 2nd or 3rd and long from deep in your own territory has a minimal rate of return - as we proved all season long. What I am suggesting is not at all ground breaking or new - look at soooo many successful NCAA and NFL teams that dinked and dinked their way down the field to victory after victory. Control the clock, rest your D and put the pigskin across the goal line. Go Vols
Tom Jones’s kid actually.
It’s not unusual…
This. There is a time for ball control but most teams need splash plays to score TDs b/c of penalties, sacks, and/ or TFL. It’s so difficult to go 70-80 yards every possession as there will be a time when the offense gets behind the chains. Our offense is stagnant, needs imagination including more routes, and splash plays. I think Heup is aware of this and will get back to a high octane offense similar to 2022.Ohio St the last two games and Boise’s playoff experience disproves this. Be explosive on offense. Get chunk plays and stretch the field. (Those also result in first downs btw).
If you have elite talent and play with elite discipline you create mismatches and big plays. Josh needs to get the offense back to the ‘22 level.
While I am not a fan and still think Manning is the best ever, it’s incredible how good Tom Brady was. He dinked and dunked most of the time. Most teams make mistakes, esp penalties, TFLs, etc. Nice post @ UT97.Very few teams are successful at this. The more plays you run with 18-20 year olds the more likely you are to have a mistake. And big down in the red zone. Let’s dig deeper.
If you look at average yards per completion you have Michigan and Oklahoma at the bottom. Other offenses you will find down there are Houston, Nebraska, and Stanford. I don’t even have to look to know these were some of the worst scoring offenses in the nation but I’m going to look now.
Here’s what we find:
Nebraska 98
Michigan 103
Stanford 109
Oklahoma 110
Houston 130
If we look at other offenses that are predicated on this style:
Pitt 48
West Va 61
Iowa 68
Miss St 96
Wisconsin 103
The only offenses that have been decent at scoring offense with predominantly “dink and dunk” philosophy is the Air Raid. Texas Tech was 4th in scoring and Washington St was 17th, but a) that offense has proven to be beatable with good tackling speedy defenses and b) it would require changing the entire offensive philosophy from a run first to a pass first offense.
One thing we could do better is use the running backs in the passing game more and mix in more jet sweeps (but we need a play maker in the slot to do that and I’m hoping Boo becomes that guy in ‘25).
Great point. Did anyone notice the graphic on the Ohio State game that listed all of the defensive players that had been with OSU for 4 or 5 years? That is a significant key to their success. I don’t know how you do that in today’s game with the portal. OSU has found a way to do that. At least so far. Is it just the money? How do they keep the guys who think they are not getting enough playing time?
Do you get points for 1st downs now?As our new Offensive Analyst, here is my request to you Mr. Jones:
* In order to WIN games, focus on securing First Downs, NOT Touchdowns
* March down the field and stop looking for the homerun - especially when we are deep in our own territory
* If you focus on First Downs, we will secure all the Touchdowns we need to win a game
* Keep our Defense off the field so that they are fresh
I have no clue what an Offensive Analyst does btw, but you'll be the best ever if you follow my sage advice! Go Vols!
These days some of those chick’s panties probably look like mini-parachutes.Hey man, if we win the NC with Landry as our O Analyst I have no problems with my gf throwing her underwear at him lol.
(For those who do not know, it is a tradition for women to rush the stage and throw panties at Tom Jones at a certain point in his concerts)

I think this is a bigger loss than people realize. I'm not going to guess his impact for development or scheme. But all our QBs and recent QB recruits have talked about their relationship with Mitch.Mitch Mitello is going to Kennesaw State to work under former Vol RB coach Jerry Mack I think I read last week
We don't have route trees, our routes are based off of defense reactions. We work the middle instead of the sidelines. Our WR's have plenty of grass to run to.I like that Heupel is bringing in an analyst that played under him when he didn’t run the veer and shoot and was running more of an early air raid/modern pro style offense. Maybe that is a sign that Heupel will start installing formations with tighter sets so the receivers have more grass to work with and thus more of the route tree to put into the passing game. MAYBE that helps us retain Matthews. I think Jefferson was the perfect WR to bring in through the portal because he has the body type to play all 3 spots and has multiple years of eligibility remaining. Now we just need an actual stud WR
I don't think CJH would bring him in anyways.I think Tee is more than happy working for John Harbaugh, coaching Lamar Jackson and eating Baltimore's fine cuisine. Who would be willing sign up for a NIL/Transfer portal world when they could be employed in the well structured and administered NFL?
